Carlos began life with the union of an egg from his mother and a sperm from his father. This beginning is called fertilization . At that time, Carlos was just one cell.
However. his genes contained a hereditary blue-print that determined how Carlos would look later in life. This set of instructions for building Carlos was carried in a chemical compound called DNA, which is found in threadlike structures called chromosomes. Carlos is tall for his age and has light brown like his father. Like his mother, he has Rh negative, type B blood. Carlos inherited blue eyes because his mother's eyes are blue and his father's eyes are blue.
Carlos has 23 chromosomes is each of his sperm cells. When his father's sperm and his mother's ovum united, a fertilized egg cell with 46 chromosomes was formed. As the fertilized egg cell divided, each of Carlos' cells that formed had 23 pairs of chromosomes. One chromosome from each pair originated from each of Carlos' parents. During the course of nine months, this fertilized egg cell developed into a fetus/baby. The genes form each parent determined Carlos' unique DNA.
