Not much is known about Gin's prior history, except that he once saved 10th Division Lieutenant Rangiku Matsumoto's life. They have been friends since then. Hence, Matsumoto is one of the few people Gin seems to truly care about. It is also known that Gin served as the lieutenant of 5th Division Captain Sōsuke Aizen before becoming captain of the 3rd Division and that he became captain at the same time as Byakuya Kuchiki.
Gin Ichimaru's zanpakuto is Shinso . It looks like a wakizashi (Japanese short sword) normally and the guard is shaped like an 'S'. Shinso's initial release is triggered by the phrase "shoot to kill" English dub: "impale him", Recent Viz: "pierce him"); in the anime, this was slightly changed to ikorosu
In its initial release, Shinso's blade extends at high speed to impale Gin's opponents from a distance. The sword also carries tremendous force when extending, as seen when Gin pushes both Ichigo Kurosaki and the giant Jidanbo out from under the Seireitei gate, despite the latter being firmly braced under it. In addition, he can maintain the extension and swing the activated Shinsō in wide arcs, attacking multiple targets quickly and simultaneously.
While it hasn't been seen in the actual series, various Bleach console games have depicted Shinso as having additional abilities. In Bleach DS: Souten ni Kakeru Unmei and Bleach DS 2nd: Kokui Hirameku Requiem, Gin fires Shinso into the sky and swords similar to Shinso's unreleased state rain all around him. In Bleach: Blade Battlers Gin shoots Shinso into the ground and the blade hits the opponent from underneath, whereas in Bleach: Heat the Soul 4, a wave of blades instead shoots up from the ground to hit the opponent.
