In case you don't know what a dystopia is, it is a future society that is the opposite of a utopia. It is usually characterized by limited personal freedom by an overbearing government which obtained its complete power in exchange for the safety it provides. Dystopias play on the fears we have that the freedom and power we give up for safety and progress may enslave us ultimately. It is an interesting way to work out fears of government control and increasing feelings of powerlessness in a heavily technological society.
