Emotionally hurt right now. Two weeks ago, Maverick ran outside while we were getting our van ready to pick up a sister in Minnesota. He never came home. I've been looking for him since then. Even put up flyers. I still hold the hope he's alive and will eventually make it back into my arms but ... I fear at this point he's been killed. crying

All female cats in my family have now been spayed. I was able to set and keep an appointment with a group called Spay and Neuter Assistance Program (S.N.A.P.) which is a part of the humane society, and associated with helping low-income people get their animals spayed and/or neutered. They also confirmed for me that these kittens and their mother are Chausies (Abyssinian/Jungle Cat hybrids; worth $300+ each), that one is a blue classic tabby, and informed me that the other is a ghost striped black. Wow, and double wow on the melanistic girlie as I thought she was just plain black. My mom now says, knowing all that, she's sad that we had to spay the mother since she was throwing off gorgeous babies but, given the circumstances, she doesn't regret spaying her either. I feel the same.

These kitties have made me fall in love with Chausies. If I could only be lucky enough in another 20-30 years to meet another Chausie with such mild temperament, I'd deal with the constant need to be entertained ... including those walks my bunch enjoy so much, and be prepared to bored-kitty proof (sturdy furniture, especially sturdy display cases for fragile music carousel and ceramic figurines, heavily interactive cat tree, lots and lots of cat toys) my future house, yes I admit sometimes they wear me out by lunch-time; I'm thankful for their intelligence as I've woken a few times to half the litter sharing my bed with me instead of jumping all over me as one would expect a highly active cat to do when faced with a more lazy human. Now if only I could get Jewel, a Ragdoll/Main Coon/American Shorthair mix, to join those walks too... fat chance of that it seems; she hates going outside for more than to sniff the changes around our porch and garden and strangely runs inside in fear whenever we humans see her out there.

Long Overdue Update:

Well, it wasn't without more loss, unfortunately but I managed to save most of one foster (he has a dead eye now because of complications from the disease) and all but two of the stray's 12 kittens. That said, I did far better than the local humane society, pound, and two animal shelters. They lost 90% of their cat population because of this illness that swept through their kennels. That would mean, if I had done what ever they'd done. I would have ended up with none of the kittens and one or two adult cats. The shelters now want our pet saving skills among their staff. I'm not so sure I want to become a vet though, and I know for a fact that none of my other family members want to become vets either.

The surviving kittens went up for adoption as soon as they were healthy enough. However, because of a recent kitten boom, no one wants one. I've talked to everyone I can, my mom has talked to everyone she can, and we and one of my sisters has sent out word to more "messengers" about them. It seems in trying to save lives I have tortured them instead as my Dad threatens the lives of these guys now as he never wanted them in the first place, let alone staying as long as they have, and I have run out of ways to protect them.

I've got half in training to wear a harness and stay on a leash (walking is another matter, some like my shoulder for some reason, others like just meandering around, sniffing the world), three want to be toilet trained but I don't have all the tools to train them yet, also sadly none of them have picked up on "no pets allowed on the table" and my dad's chewing all of us, human and cat, out for it. He also has a very different attitude about how cats (or any other companion animal) should behave so he and I are at constant odds about letting them on chairs and the couch (he believes their only place the floor or outside as living mouse traps) and heaven forbid should they ever jump into his lap, let alone onto his shoulder like they do my mom and me.

I've decided to keep one, named Maverick, in addition to a sister's abandoned dilute calico long-hair mix, Jewel. My mom is keeping the old neuter she adopted 12 years ago. The stray, after finally being spayed has taken to wandering the neighborhood again and refuses to let anyone touch the handmade collar I tested on her when it apparently didn't fit the previously mentioned old neuter who keeps taking off his collars whenever he escapes outside. I really didn't mean to have our family claim her but she's proud of "her" collar anyways and I learned never to try that again unless I'm prepared for the repercussions. The other 10 are still very much available for adoption, though most of the kittens disagree ... having now bonded to various members of the family (including one to my very reluctant father XD ). Just one seems to be non-bonded anymore. She also hasn't taken it into her own paws and gone outside to look. I don't know if it's because she knows as well as us about all the intact toms out there who would love to give her a different type of family but I'm thankful for it because I don't want her and the others to be shot by my dad for her running out and getting pregnant. I keep trying to set a time to get her and her other surviving sister spayed but my parents keep postponing it and I haven't been able to rearrange a date sooner than May now.

A stray adopted us before having kittens, then Mom fostered four more that turned out be very sick. We've now lost three (two fosters and one from the stray's litter) and may lose more and that's only the half of what's going on but for the sake of 'net security I won't mention them.
