Although somewhat shy, Rinoa is very straightforward and honest with those around her. Her tenderness, warm-hearted nature, and kind compassion makes her very endearing. She originates from a forest town called Timber, fighting for their independence against the control from Galbadia. Her initial contact with SeeD starts through Seifer, but her feelings become more directed towards someone else...

A lively young woman with the ability to touch people's hearts. Open and honest with her feelings, she speaks her mind without reservation. Driven by her ambition, she can be stubborn at times.


Rinoa was born and raised in Deling City. Her parents are Colonel Caraway of the Galbadian Army and the deceased singer Julia Heartilly. She lives at home but whenever her father becomes too much for her to handle, she resides on a train stationed at or near Timber City. While on this train, she's an active member of a resistance group named The Forest Owls. As a new Forest Owl member she spends time planning strategies while using military tactics learnt through her father.

She is a very cosmopolitan girl and her main hobby is reading. She especially loves to read new books or magazines. She's also interested in silver jewelry and enjoys making up funny words. Like her mother, her favourite flower and colour is rose. Rinoa is often depicted with rose petals around her. Unlike most of the main cast, she has a dark colouring that makes her stand out. Her most distinctive feature is her hair, which has a few streaks coloured gold-blonde.


Rinoa is quite the open book and at first glance is a cliché RPG heroine. However, each time she's on the screen it gets harder to make sense of the girl in blue. Like most real girls, many of her decisions and actions contradict themselves.

There's very little known about her history. Since she grew up in an upper middle class lifestyle and was raised by loving parents, she became a very opinionated individual. She definitely shares her thoughts and feelings without hesitation.

Just before the tender age of five, she lost her mother in a tragic accident. Her father drowned his sorrows and feelings of emotional neglect sowed the seeds of doubt in her mind. While watching her father as she grew older, she learnt about the Galbadian government and realized that the oppression mentioned in magazines about anarchism were true. She and her father, two stubborn individuals, begun arguing over this and she ended up running away.

Despite running away, she has a huge need to recreate the feelings of love and security that were present when her mother was alive. She doesn't like to be left alone and when separated from someone she feels the need to keep something that belongs to them.

She is full of candor and joie de vivre, wanting the people she cares about to truly experience life. It may seem like she's got a lot of nerve but she never intends for the people she loves to end up disliking her. She's the type of person who believes in spreading kindness because she knows how the smallest acts of caring can deeply affect and change others. It is because of this nature that her and Squall's relationship changed both characters for the better at the end of the game.

At 17 years old, Squall is a student at Balamb Garden, a prestigious military academy for elite mercenaries.

Squall's physical appearance consists of medium-length brown hair and cold blue eyes. He was rumoured to be visually based on Japanese singer Gackt, but character designer Tetsuya Nomura has stated that actor River Phoenix was the influence for Squall; both share the same birthday and physical appearance. A small scar runs diagonally across the bridge of Squall's nose; he received it at the beginning of the game in a training duel against his rival Seifer Almasy, and left Seifer with a similar (mirror-image) scar in return.

Squall usually wears a distinctive black jacket with its collar trimmed in white/silver fur (Nomura designed the fur to challenge those working on FMVs of Squall). He also wears a silver pendant in the shape of a stylized lion's head over a cross similar to the Knights Templar as well as a ring bearing a similar lion's head image. Squall calls the lion "Griever" and it seems to be symbolic of his angst and takes on significance as the plot of the game progresses.

He wields an unusual weapon called a gunblade, a combination of sword and revolver. Squall's model is simply called the 'Revolver', though he can upgrade the weapon at junk stores throughout the game. The gunblade is an extremely difficult weapon to master; as such, it is rarely used. Squall and Seifer are the only gunblade specialists who appear in the game, although Laguna Loire also uses one very briefly.

His ultimate Limit Break, Lionheart (End of Heart in the Japanese version), does 20 hits on one enemy and with the right amount of strength and a full 8-hit Renzokuken, can do as much as 279,972 damage points on one single enemy (9999 HP of damage x 28 consecutive hits = 279,972 HP of damage). Additionally, the Lionheart virtually ignores special defense.

Although Angelo is a female dog, Rinoa named her after a male Roman Catholic saint. The name was chosen for the game because it means Angel, making it one of many things foreshadowing Rinoa's destiny. However, Angelo's full name is based on a real place in Italy. Castel Sant'Angelo di Roma today is known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian in Rome.

Angelo is like family to Rinoa. The dog even has a similar personality to Rinoa's. Like a spoilt child, she doesn't like being separated from Rinoa. She also likes to eat food that is otherwise very unhealthy and dangerous for dogs to eat very often. This is because Rinoa would often share or give Angelo her leftovers.

The first time Rinoa met Angelo was at the Timber Pet Shop two years ago. Angelo was a newborn puppy and at first glance Rinoa knew she had to have it. She then secretly bought it using all of her allowance, without telling her father. Angelo is very wise and immediately memorizes new tricks from the pet magazines. A unique characteristic is that Angelo has no tail.

Rumor #1-True or False?: many say that her mother was Julia...I think this was made clear at one point in the game, but I will have to go back and see...
Many say that the Ring on a chain around her neck was her mother's...My thoughts on this: I'm pretty sure in the game (though I will have to go back and make sure) Rinoa had mentioned the ring was indeed her Mothers, I noticed that it seems to be just a straight band, no design on it...Maybe it was her wedding ring? *shrugs* Here's the merchandice pic of it: Squall and Rinoa's Rings:
