I plan on going to college to get a BFA in illustration.

As long as you have a steady hand then you'll be good.. the tattoo gun seems heavy at first so you don't want to be shaking at all.
I wouldn't recommend it for a fulltime job though so that's good you're going to go to college and do something better lol
I plan on becoming an illustrator at some point.

I started about a year ago. I've always loved to draw so it wasn't hard for me to pick up.
