Alfons obsession with outer space started early in life. As a child he would regularly spend nights on the patio with his prized telescope staring at the sky, mapping the stars and dreaming about one day traveling there. Eventually this obsession with rocketry lead him to Munich University to study under Hermann Oberth, a man who like Alfons wanted to send man into space. It was there he met Edward Elric, and the two soon became fast friends. Edward began telling Alfons about another world, a world where alchemy had triumphed over modern physics, where he himself lived in another form. Alfons, though he enjoyed the stories, rejected them as fiction. Around this time he realized he had tuberculosis. Determined to finish his work and leave his mark on the world Alfons threw himself into his work on rocketry just as Edward was drawing away from it. Shortly before his first test flight Heiderich was contacted by Rudolf Hess, a man representing the Thule society who offered him the funding he needed to finish his work. Alfons eagerly agreed to work for them. When Edward confronted him about his work Alfons angrily threw him off “You say this isn’t your world? Well it is mine and I want to leave some proof that I lived in it!” Later when his completed work was all set to go Alfons learned the truth for himself. Edward’s world was real and his work was being used to invade it. He stood by helplessly as Edward was shot and his life’s work was used not to broaden mankind’s horizons as he had intended but as a tool for destruction and terror. Finding his friend was alive, Alfons secured one last rocket and dragged Edward into it. He prepared to send off the rocket despite his friends protets explaining “We’re real Ed, not just part of your dreams like you thought. I care and I make mistakes. I may not live much longer but I'll still be here. Just don't forget me." With those words Alfons sent his friend back home. Shot in the back Alfons died, a smile still on his face for all to see as his body fell.
