A 300-word entry to the class Flash Fiction challenge in April.
A quick 300-word flash fiction entry for class that I wrote back in April of 2019 at UMW.
Costa Blues
They both sat down with their drinks at the Costa on Victoria Street in Edinburgh, taking time to sip before chatting.
“So, what did you want to talk about,” Walter asked casually.
“Well, there’s no easy way of putting this, but do you remember how we were talking about the possibility of settling down and having a family one day?”
He glanced at her and shrugged. “Well, yeah. What of it?” He wasn’t sure what she was getting at. He sipped at the Americano coffee of his.
Instead of saying it out loud, Carol-Anne just reached into her hand bag and took out a small, slender object, handing it to him. It showed 2 vertical lines in a display box on one end. Fear overtook Walter as he broke out into a cold sweat.
“Wait! You’re pregnant?”
“Apparently so.” She then turned over and smiled. “Not to worry. You’ll be able to support our lovely family with your pay.”
He cringed. “Look, I am not supporting you or that child. I don’t even know if it’s mine.”
“You’re the only one I’ve been sleeping with.”
“I need you to understand. Just go on the Dole. It’s our way of life, after all.”
“You make too much money for that.”
“Of which the government doesn’t know about how it’s from selling heroin on the street. We Scots love our Shortbread and Heroin.”
She looked at him in horror and shock. “But… you told me that you were a professor at West College in Greenock.”
“Yeah, so I lied. But you were such an easy target.”
The shop’s peace was suddenly interrupted by the sound of a slap, with Carol-Anne having slapped him across the face.
“You little… GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!” Her eyes shone red as tears began to flow.
