Here's a small example of something which I had written as a speed write assignment at university for my Creative Writing course back in the fall of 2018 semester.
The prologue by the professor was as follows:
You come home late at night after doing overtime at work. You're exhausted. After closing the front door behind you, you put your keys down and start walking down the hallway towards the kitchen. Suddenly, the phone rings...
From there, you have 5 minutes with which to write a continuance from where the intro left off. Here is what I had written as a result in those 5 minutes. Incomplete, due to the fact that I ran out of time.
Suddenly, the phone rings. At first, I can't be bothered to answer it because it's late at night and I've had a tiring day at the office. My boss outdid himself by insisting that I drop everything for an emergency meeting, which ended up simply being a discussion on how to properly and safely open a door, because someone, somewhere in the world, had apparently injured themselves by not knowing that Push and Pull mean exactly what they say.
The ringing stops and a I go back to rustling around the fridge in the kitchen, wondering what I could make myself for dinner, given I wasn't in the mood to cook for very long.
Suddenly, the phone rang again. I groaned in annoyance, before heading over to the cordless phone which was situated on the kitchen table. Picking up the receiver, I notice that the Caller ID shows "Becky" but no number. I don't actually know anyone named Becky, so I shrugged and pressed the green Call button to answer.
"Hello?" I said in a calm and normal fashion. Just because I was tired, didn't mean that I couldn't be civil on the phone.
At first, there was no audible response. As if it might be a Robocaller having dialed my number for a scam of some sort. However, that belief was short lived.
"Hey sweetie," the voice on the other end said. I breathed a sigh of relief. It was only my girlfriend Haylee.
"Hey. Where are you?"
"Oh, I stopped by my co-worker Becky's house because I had baked too many cookies earlier for the charity sale on Saturday, and thought that she might like some. But I had forgotten my cell at home and wanted to check if you had gotten home safely."
"Yeah. Yeah, I managed."
"How was work," she asked.
"Urgh. Not a good day. But I'm probably just going to head to bed after grabbing a bite to eat here in the kitchen."
"Okay, well... Why don't you have the leftover Japanese I had fro lunch yesterday? I ate earlier with the catered lunch at the office, so I'm good. But I should be home in about 20 minutes."
"Alright. Drive safely sweetie."
There was a brief pause, before she then said "I love you."
"I love you too." I then heard the click on the other end.
I grabbed the leftovers and put them onto a plate before popping that plate into the microwave to heat up.
After the food was ready, I grabbed the plate and ate at the kitchen table in peace. Once finished, I then placed the cutlery and plate into the dishwasher, and started to make my way down the hallway towards the stairs, planning on calling it a night.
The stairs and upper hallway were both still dark, with the lights turned off. There was nothing unusual about that. Turning the landing light on, I began making my way up the curved, wooden stairwell. Reaching the top of the stairs, I then switched the hall light on. Again, nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary.
I started to strip down a little, taking off my shirt as I made my way down the hall towards the master bedroom. I passed the guest bedroom which was closed, before reaching the door to my own room. Opening the door, it was dark inside, and so I reached over and flipped the light switch.
The lights light the room up, which again, showed nothing out of the ordinary for me. The bed was untouched from when Haylee and I had made it that morning after waking up. I continued to strip down, until I was ready for having a bath. I then put my clothes into the laundry basket and made my way over to the door to the en-suite bathroom adjacent to the bedroom.
Opening the door, it was still dark, but when I turned on the light, something in there seemed a little bit off. I couldn't put my finger on it at first, but it just felt like something in there right at that moment wasn't right. Heading to the left side of the room, I turn the taps on the sink on in order to wash my face. It isn't until I'm wrapping up with the sink and happen to glance at the mirror, that something catches my eye. Turning around, I see something large is in the shower, behind the frosted glass.
I know it isn't my wife, as she's over at a co-worker's place.
Walking over to the door to the shower, I tilt my head in confusion, before reaching out to take hold of the handle.
Suddenly, I feel like something is really wrong here, and I proceed to pull the door open. What I see, makes me fall back in terror and grief with a scream.
There, in the back of the shower, is my wife Haylee. Her body having been hacked it seems, and her head only hanging by some gristle. The blood in the shower appears to have been there for a while, as it had begun to dry on the tiled surface.
