Chapter 27:

Maxson bids his time, he was sure he would be able to track Nate's Pip-Boy to make sure the Knight followed through with this task. It wasn't a simple mission, Danse had been able to fool all of them. "How many years, had he been a Synth this whole time?" Maxson balls his fist, wanting nothing more then to shatter the bottle he was holding onto for dear life. He finally gets word that Nate had left the ship, the pieces on the chessboard were moving, and he had to act accordingly. His final moments playing out before his eyes as he looks at Nate. The soldier looked defiant, but he knew, he had one person he could rely on. He smiles to himself as he collects his thoughts, time to go for a ride. He paces the ship, looking for her, surprised to see her outside on the docking bay. She had been watching Nate the entire time, listening in as best she could. After talking to Haylen, Nate agreed, he couldn't kill Danse. She was glad he wouldn't harm the Paladin. Then again she never could go through with it herself. Still the aftermath that Maxson just bands Danse from the Brotherhood didn't sit right either. So she looked into it, from what she could dig up, as well as other people. There was a small bit of cut content that was never placed into the game. Someone made it a mod that allowed you to face Maxson, and become the new Elder. But in the end it was left out and they changed the ending to the Brotherhood. She never did try that mod, and maybe she was thankful because she did not want to have a hand in killing the Elder. Even if he was a bit hotheaded over Danse being a Synth.

She turns slightly, to see the man himself not far from her side. She shifts a bit, unsure how to address him. "Tell me Knight, do you think he'll follow through with my order?" She could feel her face slowly pale. "Well he is heading out to Listening Post Bravo, Haylen thinks Danse might be hiding out there..." s**t should she had said that, did it matter at the moment? She watches him closely as he frowns and heads for a waiting Vertibird, that didn't have a pilot in it as he takes the front seat. She almost forgot he said he could fly this thing on his own. Without thinking she joins him in the other seat as she straps herself in. He didn't even have to ask to join him. He smiles wide as he sets up north to where he knew the location on the area was. She wasn't to sure she really liked that look on his face, just what was he planing? Meanwhile Nate pants deeply as he leaves the elevator. "Let him be alive, please I can't lose....not again.." He kills the last protectron and sees Danse. He looked tired, drain, unsure, he always looked so different outside his power armor as he rushes through the cracks in the wall. Danse looks at him, his brown eyes shining dully. "Somehow I knew...but deep down I had hoped Maxson would had sent someone else..." Nate lowers his weapon. "You really had no idea....did you?" Danse lets out a deep sigh. "You think if I did, I would had joined the Brotherhood? Be it a need to survive or faulty wiring, I don't know, maybe I should had just returned to the ship when Haylen told me the news.." She had managed to get him a message, she had been listening the whole time and warned Danse. She looked up to this man, and wouldn't back down without a fight.

"I'm not going to kill you Danse, I already lost more then enough..." Nate had put his gun away. "There has to be a way out." "Maxson wouldn't allow it, I'm a Synth, I'm the reason we're in this spot, the shining example of why the Institute needs to be stopped.." Nate moves over to his side, placing his hand on him slowly. "Danse, listen to me, as far as I care, you are Brotherhood, and your more human then most people I've come across..." Danse goes quiet as he looks at Nate. "You really feel that way, after everything the Brotherhood taught you?" Nate just smiles at him warmly. "Danse, they can tell me your the enemy, until their faces turn blue, that chances nothing..." Danse slowly smiles as he nods, they couldn't stay here, without another word, they head for the elevator, and ride it up. Nate was tempted to hold his hand, but decides against it. Sara lets out a small sound when they land. The ride had been a bit bumpy and she could swear she was holding on far to tightly. They minute they land however she quickly scrambles out and joins Maxson, just as Danse and Nate exit the building. Nate looks at her as she glances back, well this was going to be interesting. Danse gives Maxson a hurtful look. "I can explain.." Maxson shoots him a glare as he points out his hand. "I'll deal with you later, Knight why hasn't this...thing be dealt with?!" Nate hardens his look as he steps in front of Danse. "He's not a 'thing' he's a person, Synth or not.." Maxson was seeing red as Sara looks between the both of them. "Danse isn't a man, it's a machine...an automaton created by the Institute. It wasn't born from the womb of a loving mother, it was grown within the cold confines of a laboratory. Flesh is flesh. Machine is machine. The two were never meant to intertwine."

Same line, same look, but hearing it up close made a chill go up her spine. This man really believed all of this. "By attempting to play God, the Institute has taken the sanctity of human life and corrupted it beyond measure." Danse looks at him, his eyes shining against the lights. "After all I've done for the Brotherhood... all the blood I've spilled in our name, how can you can say that about me?" Maxson throws his finger at Danse. "You're the physical embodiment of what we hate most. Technology that's gone too far.." He holds out his hands to the land around them. "Look around you, Danse. Look at the scorched earth and the bones that litter the wasteland. Millions...perhaps even billions, died because science outpaced man's restraint. They called it a 'new frontier' and 'pushing the envelope', completely disregarding the repercussions. Can't you see that the same thing is happening again?! You're a single bomb in an arsenal of thousands preparing to lay waste to what's left of mankind." Nate was about to speak but Sara steps up. She gives him a silent look before turning to Maxson. Maxson angry, was not something she wanted to mess with. She always had a more passive nature, she hated arguing with people. "Danse isn't a weapon..." Maxson glares at her, she wasn't going to back down, not now. "Nate's right, in spite of..all the fear and hate, Danse is still, well Danse, him being a Synth doesn't change anything, shouldn't change anything." She turns her gaze to the Paladin. "In all honesty...did you know?" Danse shakes his head at this, his eyes pleading. "No. After all I've done for the Brotherhood...all the blood I've spilled in our name, how can you can say that about me?"

He boldly takes a step forward, standing with Nate. "It's true. I was built within the confines of a laboratory, and some of my memories aren't my own. But when I saw my brothers dying at my feet, I felt sorrow. When I defeated an enemy of the Brotherhood, I felt pride. And when I heard your speech about saving the Commonwealth. I felt hope. Don't you understand? I thought I was human, Arthur. From the moment I was taken in by the Brotherhood, I've done absolutely nothing to betray your trust and I never will." Sara nods as she turns her gaze back to Maxson. She felt like s**t for turning against him, but she wanted to at least try for a different outcome. "Taking Danse out...won't solve anything, it won't change what the Institute is doing....what they've been doing.." She turns her eyes back to Danse. "It's not fair to him...hell anyone, to be...made, he didn't ask that, hell no one does and I should know how that feels!" She was standing in front of Maxson now. "He's still flesh and blood, while I may not understand the whole science behind all this crap, but he's more human then most people you run into this Hell hole. And what, your going to use this as an excuse to 'send a message'?" She could see the disappointment flashing in his eyes. Either it was at her, himself, it didn't really matter. She fights herself for a moment. "You can't do this Arthur, and not think the people you lead won't question this. The Brotherhood respects Danse, and everything he's done, Synth or not, they don't need to know, no one does.." She half jumps when she feels a hand on her shoulder. She looks back to see Nate standing with her.

"The Brotherhood needs to change it's views on Synths, not all of them are the enemy you paint them out to be. Hell I would have never known about my son, if it hadn't been for a Synth.." Maxson looks between the both of them, silent. Nate keeps talking either way. "It might be considered disobedience, hell kick me out, but I'm not following this order...one that should had never been given in the first place..." Maxson slowly holds up his hands, hearing enough, his mind working a mile a minute. This was all on him now, what he did could change the outlook of the Brotherhood for years to come. He takes a deep breath before he speaks quietly. "Paladin...Danse..." He shakes his head slowly. "As Elder, I ask you forgive me..." They all look at him stunned. "Perhaps, in my hindsight, I let this...misinformation blind my better judgement..I shall return to the Prydwen, and make sure this oversight doesn't happen again. I won't allow this...misconduct to force our numbers against one another..stay here as long as you need Paladin, I expect the both of you back on the ship for farther instructions." He turns back to the Vertibird, Sara could swear she was pissing her pants at the moment, that actually worked!? "Knight, are you coming?" She jumps, giving Nate a surprised look. She just shrugs as she quickly follows after him and Nate watches it take off. Danse was to stunned to speak, let alone move. It takes him awhile to finally turn to Nate. "Did....did she just convince Maxson to...let me live?" Nate was, overjoyed, the minute he saw her again he was going to hug the crap out of her. "Y-yeah, I don't believe it, she managed to change his mind!" Nate was half laughing, half crying as he rushes Danse and knocks him into the dirt.

Danse lets out a low 'oof' but he just holds onto Nate as tightly as he could, just happy to still be breathing. He slowly gets up, hanging his head a bit. "I'll never be able to repay you...or her for standing up for me.." Nate just waves his hand like it didn't matter. "I wasn't going to step down, slightly surprised to see the balls that girl has to do the same." Danse shakes his head at this. "I was half expecting him to order her to carry out the order.." Nate looks up at that. "He might had, if she hadn't said anything....damn what do you think he's going to do?" Danse wasn't sure about that. There was no doubt that hell was going to rain down after this. No one back talked the Elder, but she may as well be the first to defy him. Nate was in no rush to move at the moment, his eyes on Danse. "This...really doesn't change anything...you know?" Danse shuffles at this as he blushes, looking down. "Look I'm not going to lie, after all...this, it's going to take some time to sort it all out. But..thank you..." Nate smiles as he moves closer, however long it took, as long as he still had someone at his side, he couldn't care less. Meanwhile, the ride back, was just as tense as the ride to the small base. She had no idea what he was thinking, but she saw they weren't heading straight to the Prydwen. He aims for a landing pad on top of a old broken down hospital, at least what was left of it. He lands carefully and just steps out. Sara fumbles at her seat belt before joining him. She had no idea how much time had past, but the sun was starting to rise, another day had just came and went.

He doesn't say anything as he watches the light slowly flood the area before looking at her. "Of all the things I could had planed for, you standing against me, was not one of them.." She flinches as she looks down, placing her arms behind her. She could feel her heart racing. "Look, I know, you're probably past the point of pissed at me for...that." She looks up at him slowly. "But I just couldn't sit back and not do anything. Arthur, what you were considering, was nothing sort of murder, Synth or not, Danse didn't deserve...that." She shakes her head as she runs her hands through her hair. "This is insane, human, not human, don't we have enough to worry about. Danse had no idea about what he was...if it hadn't been for that holotape, you'd still have the same respect for him." She boldly walks up to him. "You'd still be none the wiser, we could had blown the Institute straight to Hell and we would had never known!" Maxson remained silent as she spoke. She calms down after a minute, again she didn't really like arguing with people. "I know you don't agree, this is exactly the reason why the Brotherhood started this fight..." She goes quiet as she looks down. "Doesn't mean we can't change...it's how we work. We learn, I may not always be the brightest when it comes to this sort of thing, but I know enough to know how wrong it was..." He slowly holds up his hand and she stops talking. It takes him awhile to work what he wanted the say, what he should say. "I'm willing to admit...I made a grave mistake.." She looks up at him, surprised. "I let my anger blind me to the real issue at hand. Danse is a Synth, we know that now...he didn't.." He shakes his head slowly, still trying to wrap his mind around this.

She reaches out slowly as she takes a hold of his hand. "The Institute may had made him, but the Brotherhood shaped him.." Maxson looks into her eyes slowly. "If they ever gave a s**t to what they did, don't you think they would have used that card. Think about it Arthur, they would have to be really stupid to not use Danse as their pawn. They don't care about what they make, they just send them off into the world and dust their hands off.." He lets out a low sound, he looked far to tired for this as he slowly leans into her. He doesn't think, he just pulls her in and kisses her as deeply as he could. It takes her by surprise, but she wraps her arms around him and closes her eyes, enjoying the feel of him against her. He pulls away, slightly breathless, his finger now in front of her face. "Don't you ever...EVER pull a stunt like this again, are we clear?" She blinks at him a bit. "But then I wouldn't be me, then would I?" He glares at her a bit, but it meant little against the smile spreading over his face. "You are, by far the most stubborn woman I have come across, and damn it you're...right..." He places his hand on her cheek. His heart was racing, in spite of everything that just happened, he couldn't help but fall in love with her more. No one ever stood up to him, but she was willing to face the storm head on. In order to fight for something she believed in. "How can I fight falling for you...when you fight with the same passion as anyone that joins us?" She was blushing again as he pulls her closer against him. "It's going to take time, and a lot of covering, but I'll make damn sure this gets taken care of.." Again the last thing he needed was for people to start firing at one another. Lucky enough only a small number of people knew about Danse. But things rarely kept quiet for long.

He was so close, his forehead pressed against her's. "We should get back to the ship, last thing I need is for things to get out of hand..." She gives him an understanding smile. "Of course, you're still the boss.." He lets out a low chuckle. "It's...going to take time for me to be...okay with this..." He spoke carefully, having to act like all of this was nothing more then a giant misunderstanding. "But I am willing to try..." She only smiles at him more as he pulls her in for another disparate kiss. He just wanted to make sure she really was still there. If he hadn't changed his mind, or worse, if she hadn't been there, how far would he had really go? There was no doubt in his mind he would had taken care of things himself and would had shot both of them. He slowly pulls away, looking into her eyes. He could had lost so much, and there would had been no way to bring that back. He still wasn't, okay with this idea, but maybe he didn't need to be, not right now. He slides his hand through her hair, his words escaping him before he could stop himself. "I love you.." Her eyes go wide at that as he blinks and slowly turns red. He coughs a bit as he tries to look elsewhere. "I meant...what I mean to say..." She silences him with a kiss, smiling at him all the more. It was kind of cute, but he was slowly trying to come with terms with all of this. "Relax Arthur, before you dig that hole deeper, I love you too, in spite of how crazy stubborn you can get. besides, someone's gotta look out for ya." He lets out a low sound at this, but oddly, his feelings for her hadn't changed in the slightest.
