Insane stories of a McDonald's employee
Just some stuff that's happened in the last few years I've been working. As well as other things
Into the Fallout.
Chapter 13:

Danse hums tunelessly as he works. He was outside of his power armor for once as him and Nate start work on the emitter. Ingram was off to the side, with Sara working on the console. The rain had finally stopped by the next day, so they could continue their work, as promised. Danse didn't mind lending a hand, With the four of them they were making good progress. One of the scribes had moves one of the generators that powered the Prydwen. The large ship could do without it for a little while. At least long enough for them to use it. Nate still wasn't sure how he was going to get out, but he feared that he would have to figure that out once inside. He really didn't know what to expect. Let alone what the Institute looked like. Didn't take long for Sara to join Danse's tune and before she knew it she ended up joining him in some old country song she hadn't heard in ages. Ingram couldn't help but laugh at the small bit of entertainment. She was working on the front panels while Sara worked under it with all the wires. "I didn't know anyone else would know that song..." Sara lets out a low laugh as she works her way out from the tiny work space. She needed some air as she turns to Danse. "I grew up on country songs, though I haven't heard that one in....awhile..." She wipes the sweat off her as she picks up some more pieces to go back to where she was before. She had to talk a bit louder since she was inside the large compartment. "But I grew out of it ages ago.." Ingram looks up as Maxson makes his way over. They had been working for some hours and he wanted to see the progress they made. Of course, he picks the best time to cut in.

"I remember this one time though, when I was about thirteen. It was just shortly after my mom got remarried. Anyways, my step dad decided to go take a road trip to go see some family he had out in Arizona...if you.." Ingram taps on the metal. "Yeah, we know where that is.." Danse nods his head at this as he sees Maxson. He just gives them this look to not say a thing. Nate was curious to see what would happen himself. "Well, it was a long trip as you can imagine and going anywhere in this mess isn't safe..." She had to make sure to cover all her bases after all. "We just crossed the border, we had the radio on, and it cuts to static...then.." She chuckles a bit as she slowly moves out, her back to Maxson. "The next song we hear is...He promised her a new and better life out in Arizona. Underneath the blue never-ending sky, swore that he was gonna. Get things in order he'd send for her. When he left her behind, it never crossed her mind. There is no Arizona..." She holds out her hand. "I think it was a a rare moment where I look at my mom, she looks at me, we look back at the sign we just past and I just scream: Then where the f*ck are we!?" Nate was dying of laughter at this point as Danse just keeps his eyes on Maxson, still not saying a word. "I mean, it was such perfect timing, and I don't even remember the chick that signs that song." She looks up at bit as she gives it some thought. "Jamie O'Neal I think, but I might be wrong, sure has beat this one song I swear followed me for years..." She shakes her head as she takes a minute to retie her hair so it would stop getting in her face.

Nate was still trying hard to remain calm, but he lets out a small chuckle. "What odd timing.." He looks at Maxson. "Tell me about it!" Sara throws her hands up as she makes her way over to the toolbox. "I mean...I know I'm sure there's some deep meaning behind it, but come on, you don't tell a bunch of tired a** people that spent the day on the road the state they just entered doesn't exist....." She blinks as she looks down. "The hell did I do with that screwdriver?" Someone hands it to her. She blinks and tilts her head up to see Maxson. She half screams as Nate only start to laugh more as she blushes deeply. "You people suck, how long was he....you..." She wanted to slap them for not saying anything. "Thank you..sir..." Maxson says nothing as she rolls her shoulders and walk over to the console. She says nothing else as she goes back inside and goes back to work. Danse lets out a low cough. "Elder sir, everything is on schedule, we have the generator in place and final touches are being made to the console. Knight.." "Yeah yeah I hear ya...just gotta make sure everything is connected..." She slowly pokes her head out. "Is it blinking?" Ingram takes a look and nods. "We got lights." Sara nods as she slowly gets back out and closes the whole thing. "Then I'm done with my end.." She tries to hold a wince as she holds her arm. Something had cut her on the way out. "Well...ow.." She holds her arm as she shrugs. "But we got it working, now all we need to do is finish the emitter..." Nate blinks a bit as he nods. "Yeah, still working on the top part...um Knight your kind of...bleeding.." Sara looks back at her arm to see that the scrap metal she bumped against had really cut into her deeply. Maxson was furious. "In the Vertibird, now!" Sara pales at this and nods quickly making her way to the landing pad. Maxson throws the others a hard look.

"I expect you to continue working.." He turns and leaves to return to the Prydwen. Nate watches him leave as he lets out a low sigh. Ingram says nothing as she places the finishing touches on the consul and heads off to go get somethings. Nate turns to Danse, his eyes also following Maxson. "Is it just me, or does he have a thing for her?" Danse blushes a bit, he wasn't an expert on these things after all. "It would seem so, but I've known Art....I mean Elder Maxson, for some time now.." Nate rises his brow at the slip, but says nothing. "He's stubborn I'll give him that..." There wasn't much they could do other then get back to work. As for Sara, she was quickly taken to to the medical bay. Cade was out getting supplies, so Maxson takes things into his own hands. He places his hand where she had cut herself and cleans the wound. She hardly moves as he gets a better look on how deep it was. From what he can see, it was only skin deep. "You should learn to be more careful.." He pulls out some gauze to wrap up her arm and a stimpak. She wasn't looking forward to that. "I didn't see...whatever it was I ran into. To be fair, I've handled worse." He raises his brow as he starts to wrap her arm. "Care to explain?" "You mean outside of burning myself constantly on cookie sheets, I walked home once, with a broken finger." He stops as he turns to look at her fully. "You...what?" She points to her left arm. "See that tiny scar just over the bone there, I broke that little finger when I fell off my bike."

He takes a look as he sees the small mark she spoke of. It wasn't large, but it was noticeable. (*)"Now...don't laugh, but I had to ride a bike to go to school. It was...mandatory I assure you. But I lived really far so, I found myself a bicycle and that was was that. Well, one day, I was trying to get back onto the sidewalk, and the next thing I know, my tire goes one way, and I go the other. The handle bar jerked hard enough that it fractured the bone, right along here." She uses her other hand to point to the base of her finger. "Hurt like hell, never broke a bone before. Tried to ride home but the chain had slipped off and with a broken finger, I wasn't going to be able to fix that. So I walked home, my hand swollen by this point." Maxson sticks her with the stimpak and she jumps a bit. She hadn't been expecting it, but it was over with quick. So that's how those worked. "Well I finally made it home, and I just yelled out, ma, hey ma I think I broke my finger and..yeah I had to get a cast...but the whole time I was calm...I just got up and just walked home that says something right there."(*) Maxson lets go of her arm as he steps back. "That..was the only time you broke anything?" "Oddly enough yes...got my a** handed to me...by my bike...still had to ride it though...fun times!" Not really, it sucked, she got cased by a dog for a bit and had to go the long way, for months. "Not counting weather, stray animals...getting cased by said animals, it was great...best four years of my life..." Her sarcasm didn't go unnoticed.

She looks at her arm and moves it slowly. "But thanks..sorry about earlier, but the good news is the console is finished. It wasn't that hard to hook it all up. Just hated having going in there..." She shutters a bit as Maxson turns to her. "Well you don't have to worry about it..." She flinches at his tone as she gives him a small nod. "Right, so just curious, once Nate...um Knight Thomson enters that thing, what will we do after. You still want me to help Ingram with...that other protect?" She made sure not to say it out loud just in case as he nods at this. "That plan still holds..as long as you don't harm yourself again." She blinks at this as she looks at her arm. "I make no promise.." He glares at her as she shrugs. "I'm clumsy, I...can't help that, I...ran into the counter more times then I could count it looked like someone was punching my leg..." That had hurt, it took awhile to heal. "But fine if it means that much to ya, I'll...do better." There was a small second, she could swear he was blushing. It was hard to see under the beard. Was he really that worried, how odd. "But I think we both know I'm lying horribly, hey I got a good track record of not breaking more bones at least." Maxson turns back to her as he walks over to the bed she was sitting on. She blinks at him as he lowers his head just enough to look into her eyes. "I suppose it'll have to do, how you haven't gotten yourself killed is a mystery.." She remains calm as she smirks at him. "Survival skills at it's finest?" She had never seen his eyes get so dark. But it seemed to be natural sense they slowly return to their more natural blue color.

"I would imagine, you're the type of person that gets up in face of what they go through.." Maxson hadn't moved an inch. "Much like myself..." He shakes the thought away, what was he saying? Sara watches him as he, slowly seems to forget what sort of, point he was trying to make here. "That's me in a nutshell, so to speak." Nothing, he either didn't hear her, or something was going on. She didn't know what to make of it since, well he wasn't saying anything. Which, made her nervous whenever it got this quiet with people. She was never sure why it bothered her so much. Much to her surprise, he, ever so slowly, places a hand on her cheek. She feels her face grow warm. The thought seems to fade as he lets her go. She watches as this, strange anger seems to work it's way through him once more. Wither it was at himself, or something else she was missing, he was on the edge of snapping. She wasn't sure what to do, so her mind decides to take the stupid route, and she slowly reaches out and returns the jester as she touches his cheek lightly. It seems to only take a second as he seems to, calm back from whatever he was thinking as he seems to be looking back at her. It was better then him looking 'through' her. A part of her could help but offer him as small smile. "Hey..relax...it's fine...I should get back to work, I get the feeling Nate is going to need it. He doesn't seem to...tec savvy like myself..."

Again, her brain picks the stupid route as she kisses the top of his head. "You should really learn to relax more.." She slowly gets up and heads off to go return to her work. Leaving behind a very bewildered Elder, still standing there, to stunned to move. There was a split second in his mind, when he had reached out to her, he got angry, at himself. What the hell was he thinking after all, what right did he have to even do something like that? Then, she surprised the hell out of him, kisses him, and left. No, he places his hand on his forehead. She kissed the top of his head, and told him to relax. Which, to be far was so far from his mind. This was far out of his comfort zone. He had no clue what he was doing. And yet it almost felt like, he wasn't control all of a sudden. Cade walks in with a box of new supplies to see the Elder there. "Sir..." When was the last time he had seen him in this room? Cade moves slowly as Maxson doesn't move. "Elder sir..." Maxson jumps as he seems to return from, wherever it was he was from. "Knight-Captain...sorry, one of the Knights....I had to use some of your gauze..." He says nothing else as Cade holds out his hand to get him to calm down a bit. "Elder, breath, it almost looks like your having a panic attack...just..sit..." Cade was good at what he did, looking after the crew. Not just when it came to physical needs, but mental as well. And right now he just wanted to make sure the Elder was okay.

Cade made sure to get some purified water and hands it over to the Elder. "Alright, now, care to tell me what happened?" Maxson holds onto the small can of water he was given. "I.." Hell where to even start? "Nothing, I don't know what came over me..." Cade sighs deeply, he should had seen this coming. "Look, sir, with all due respect, you can't keep pushing yourself like this. I keep telling you, even as an Elder you can't just keep working nonstop and think you'll be okay..." He watches Maxson closely, he had been working for the man some time now. "Unless there is something else on your mind?" Maxson holds on tight as he stands. "No...you're right..." Cade hadn't expected that, every time he had tried to talk some sense into the man, all he got was back talk. Or some reason that he just had to keep working. Well something sure as hell changed. Without another work Maxson leaves and Cage just watches him go, wondering what in the world just happened. Once he was in his room, behind closed doors, did he feel safe. He takes a slow breath as he finally admits to himself what he had almost done. He was moments away, of trying to kiss her. And rather then go through with it, he grew angry and almost wrecked the medical bay. But, somehow, she brought him down. He slumps into his chair and grabs the whisky bottle. He swore he normally didn't drink this much, but right now, he just felt he could use it as he takes a swig. He uses the quiet to lean his head back as he runs his hands through his hair. Some leader he was turning out to be. He was close to throwing the bottle he had at the wall, but decides against it. It would just be something he would have to clean later and he didn't want that.

Maxson lowers his head, he felt like he was going through this endless loop of thoughts. Not even the whisky was helping, of course it wouldn't. He lets out a deep frustrated sound. Why was this so damn hard? "Your the one making it harder..." He grumbles at his inner thoughts. He shouldn't even be feeling this way, and yet, here he was. His eyes go wide as he looks up. "And just what is it you feel?" He almost feels himself answer, but he just stares off. How did he feel, if anything, should he? The sound of glass breaking reaches his ears and he looks down to see he had dropped his bottle. He lets out a low groan as he slowly get up, and cleans up the mess, careful not to cut himself. Not to long ago he made her swear to be more careful. He picks up the last piece of glass and it slowly dawns on him everything that had just happened. More importantly, how well she had handled it. She didn't even back down, she just seemed to take it all in stride, kissed him and promised to do better. Once again his palm was on the spot, and he felt a pleasant warmth spread through his body. He was starting to feel, hopelessly lost. He felt drained, and it wasn't even a past lunch yet. He picks himself up as he heads to his private bathroom to take a very long, and hot shower. As hot as his body could take it because damn it he needed to get his mind off of all of this, and fast. He removes his coat, everything, as he shoves himself in the tiny stall that had been built into the room. He uses pure hot water as he hangs his head under the faucet. He could feel his muscles twitching as he lets the hot water run over him. This was fine, it stung a bit, but this was fine. He was dead set on staying here until either the water got to damn cold or he figured something out. Though he had the feeling the latter would happen and he would be forced out. He'll worry about it later.
