Chapter 7:

Bang! The sound of gun fire echoed through the old building. They were in the barracks, as Sara keeps her eyes open. She wasn't sure if she would ever get used to the sounds of gun fire. Most of the others around her had laser guns. Which she didn't trust herself with. But something clicks in her as she takes the lead with Paladin Floss. "Eye's forward, keep them safe." Another shot rings out as she takes out another Feral as the Paladin smiles at her. He was a good man, slowly reaching an old age, but he could still fight with the best of them. She was a natural as she made sure everyone stayed together. Once the area was safe they checked the area for any loot they could use. They didn't find much, some old ammo boxes. A few documents, most of them faded with age. However as she pokes around a small office she finds a safe. She was able to get it open to see a weapon of some kind. She couldn't tell what it was, looked like a pre-war laser riffle. She finds a few papers on the weapon, it was a prototype. "Find something Knight Hagen?" She flinches at the name, still not used to it. "I found this.." She was careful to lift the weapon, making sure it wasn't pointed at anything. "I think it's a pre-war weapon, I even found notes on it.." His eyes go wide at this as he smiles. Much like Danse he wore a tough looking set of power armor, just without the helmet. "Good find soldier." She sets her pack down and places it inside as well as all the notes she found. After a few minutes they gather a few crates and store away any equipment they might have use for. All those years lifting fry boxes were paying off as she picks up one crate and the Paladin grabs the other.

"You got it okay?" She strains a bit but nods. "I got it sir.." They all regroup, all in all their mission had been a success and they file outside as Paladin Floss sets off the signal grenade for them to be picked up. Once back on the Prydwen it was rather early in the morning. She had no idea how fast time went, and it was slowly hitting her how tired she was. But they had to report to Elder Maxson first. He was just waking up when they got to his door. He grumbles softly before he orders whoever it was to come in. Couldn't the man get some coffee first? Paladin Floss enters with a Sara behind him, still holding that crate. Getting it up the stairs hadn't been easy. "Reporting in Elder sir." The Paladin salutes, she would do the same but her hands were full. "I'm pleased to report, we found some good equipment that could be very useful, Knight." She jolts, realizing she was being addressed. "Oh..yes sir, may I put this down?" Elder Maxson points to his table and she was so happy to put the thing down. She shuffles through it as she holds out what she found and the notes that were with it. "Most of it's faded...sir." He looks at the gun with wide eyes. "Where did you find this?" "It was in one of the rooms, in a floor safe." Paladin Floss speaks up. "She's a natural on the field, hell she even took charge, I barely had to do a thing!" She could feel herself blushing. "She'd make one hell of a Paladin some day, I look forward to training with you more Knight." He gives his salute, having more missions he had to turn to. She was just left there, stunned. "Took charge did you?" She jumps as she stutters a bit.

"O-oh gosh..I-I.." She takes a deep breath. "I didn't even think twice about it, when those Feral's came out..." It was like something clicked, she didn't normally take charge, but when it came to it, she was the go to person on watching over the store when her managers were in a meeting. She knew what she was doing, she spent enough time watching how others handled themselves. "I..guess it just came naturally...I know that Paladin Floss was in charge, and he's a good man. But when I noticed a few of the others falter...I don't know. The only thing crossing my mind was they needed someone to guild them..." She goes quiet again, her poor heart this place was going to give her a heart-attack if she wasn't careful. "No one got hurt at least..." She watches Maxson closely, it was still rather hard to know what he was thinking. He had his eyes on the riffle she handed over, but he was still listening. After a minute or so he finally seems to turn his gaze to her. "And all this..is what you found?" "The others, myself, most of it's in good use." Her knowledge of computer hardware was coming in handy. "Some of the circuit boards are still useful.." She pulls one out to show him. "I..have no idea what's on it, but all you have to do is wire this thing in a old terminal, just in case there might be some bug on it..." Boy that had been one hell of a lesson on her end. "Last thing you want is some virus running amok on your computers..." The image of the Prydwen going down in flames didn't sit right with her. "Virus?" She blinks at the look he was giving her. "You've never heard of a computer virus...guess they'er rare." She had no idea, oh hell she might be blowing her cover a bit.

"It's mostly just something in the components itself, faulty memory cards, a lose wire, old data files, they can corrupt your computer systems faster then you can blink.." There she went, full education mode on the matter. "I've seen it happen first hand, how everything you worked hard for, all wiped out before you can really do anything about it..." He was watching her closely again, his look still unreadable. "You know about computers?" She was blushing again. "Y-yes sir..." Even if the computers they did use where different from what she was used to she imagined the inside was all the same. He lowers the weapon to the table, trying to find something to say. What else was there to learn about this woman? "Don't tell me you know how to hack into them..." He glares at her as she shakes her head. "No sir, I'm not a hacker..." She decides to not tell him she made her own tower since they didn't really seem to use them. Which made her wonder how these terminals worked in the first place. He seems to relax as he turns and heads for his desk. He pokes around a bit before turning to her and hands her a chain necklace. She takes it slowly to see a set of holotags with her name on them. She had her own number and everything. She slips it on around her neck. "Thank you sir.." He forgot to hand them to her before she left, but he just nods at her. "I'll keep the riffle you found, and go over the notes you picked up." Straight back to business, a part of her was thankful for that. "But Knight.." She feels her body stiffen. "Good work, showing leadership skills on the battlefield, shows improvement."

He meant ever word of it as he watches her slowly relax again. "Your dismissed Knight..." She quickly nods and almost trips over herself on leaving, she even forgot to salute the man, but she wasn't really thinking clearly. He just shakes his head at this, but he lets it slide as he look down again. She was starting to surprise him and he just didn't know how to really feel about that. It wasn't that it wasn't anything he wasn't used to. He's met tons of people over the years that surprised him. But, this was different somehow. He again looks at the riffle before he could feel himself pacing. "Get a hold of yourself soldier, you have work to do..." After taking a deep breath he shakes it all out and just gets right back to it, trying to keep his mind clear. Sara was so tired as she walks past the power armor station. Paladin Danse hadn't left yet with Nate. He had been admiring the work that had been done on his helmet. He was about to thank Ingram, but she just shakes her head. "Don't look at me, thank her." Sara had more or less gotten turned around trying to find her way to her bed when the Paladin walks up to her. "Knight." She jumps a bit and blinks, looking up a bit. "Paladin..." It caught her off guard, but seeing him in his armor was always breath taking. "Sorry...I didn't mean to jump, I got turned around...did you need something...sir?" She had to remember the man was a rank above her. "I was informed you're the one that worked on my helmet.." She looks down to see he was holding it in his hands.

"Oh...yes, I fixed it a bit before you and Knight Thomson went into the Glowing Sea. I..um hope I didn't mess it up or something..." Danse blinks at her before shaking his head. "Oh no I wanted to thank you, I don't think my helmets has worked this well before.." "Hey I heard that!" Ingram places her hands on her hips as she glares at them. But even Sara could tell the woman didn't mean it at all as Sara chuckles a bit. "Glad to help sir." She turns her head to see Nate and she nods her head to him. "I'm going to bed, it's been a long night, good luck out there." She gives a sloppy salute but turns and finally finds her way to her bed. She kicks off her boots and digs into her foot locker to find the small teddy bear she had saved and curls up with it, quickly falling asleep. Danse just smirks a bit as he flips his helmet into the air and put it on. "I hope you're ready soldier." Nate smiles brightly as he nods. "You bet sir, lets go track down a Courser." Dance was smiling right back, but it was hidden under the helmet. "Outstanding." The two get ready and soon leave the ship to continue their mission. Several hours pass and Maxson had enough time to study the weapon that was brought to him. It was one of the first models used before the laser riffles they had now became standard use. He had never seen one before, and this one looked like it could still be used. He was have to test it out once he made sure it was in working order. Last thing he wanted was to try and fire the weapon and have it blow up in his face. He already had one scar on his face.

He still often wondered how he got lucky to survive that Deathclaw at such a young age. He got lucky, he knew that much. He ran his thumb over the thick scar without thinking. It didn't bother him as much as it used to, took awhile to learn how to open his mouth without it tearing. He frowns at the memory, but remembers the look on Danse's face when he told him. He was so speechless, but he was left in awe someone as young as him had pulled it off. Mostly untouched, that in it self was rare, Deathclaws were not something to take lightly. He shakes out the daze as he picks up the weapon. He wasn't going to keep it, no he was happy with the weapon he had after all. Not that he got to use it all that often anymore. But the Knight found it so it only seemed fair she got to keep it, right? "Right...now..where is she?" He asks around, until Ingram points him to the small area of beds that had been set up. A few others were resting, Sara wasn't the only night owl the ship had after all. But when he finds her dead asleep, holding onto what looked to be an old teddy bear, he was once again lost for words. It was like the most natural thing in the world for her. He wasn't sure if he should wake her, or just wait. Someone chuckles when they see this, but it wouldn't be the first time someone was caught sleeping with something. "Or someone..." He ducks his head as he feels his cheeks go warm. He learned the hard way to knock before going into a room. He was so young, and he had no idea what those two soldiers were doing under that blanket. He knew now of course, but it still put him on edge when he thought about it for to long.

He was about to leave when she moves and lets out a low groan. She wasn't sure how long she had been asleep, but it was long enough to know she needed to get up now. She slowly sits up as she rubs her eyes. "Still here, I wonder if I should be surprised?" She yawns as she leans back, letting her back pop. Maxson hadn't meant to stare, but whatever that shirt she was wearing was left little to the imagination. He shuts his eyes, realizing what he was doing as she seems to finally wake up. "Elder...sir.." He tightens his fist as he slowly turns around. "You're awake, good...here." He almost throws the riffle at her, but she ends up catching it. It takes her a minute to remember it was the one she found. "What's this...?" "You found it, so I'm letting you keep it..." He sounded so gruff when he spoke. Like he was trying to cover something. "Thanks...but I have no idea how to use a laser riffle..." In the game, sure, it wasn't that hard. But to see someone turn to ash up close made her shiver. "Plus...I think it's broken...or at least, the lens here is.." She points it out, still sitting in her bed. She blinks as she quickly gets up and gets the rest of her uniform on. He just turns his gaze to the nearest wall until she was finished. Once she was sure she looked okay, she shows him what she was looking at. "Right here...see?" He takes a closer look, but soon sees what she was talking about. It was small, but it would still be enough to effect the weapon. "Then it's time you learn how to fix one. All Brotherhood soldiers are skilled in using laser weapons." Including himself but he leaves that part out as she nods slowly. "So..um...how would I fix...this without breaking it?" He had all the notes on the weapon, far be it from her to make sense out of it though. "Well, breaking it more...sir.."

He was about to answer, but he drops it. "Follow me.." She blinks but quickly follows after him. He grabs the notes she had from his table and it wasn't long before they were at a work bench. She watches closely as he takes the weapon, and shows her what to do. He was very quick, but careful, the weapon was old. Luckily the safe it was in, saved it from most of the damage. She pulls up a stool as he shows her how to repair the riffle. He made sure to stay as close to the notes as possible, but making a few adjustments of his own. Once he was sure the weapon was safe to handle he steps back as he looks at her. She understood, most of it, sort of, maybe, but she jolts up as she nods. "You make it look so easy, you might even be able to do it blindfolded..." He lets out a low huff through his nose, had she been watching at all? "But you understand how to fix it right?" He watches her face as she starts to look nervous. "You might...have to show me a few more times, but I'll get it..." She was just trying to be honest as he narrows his eyes a bit. "The notes you found do a well enough job to explain how the weapon works.." She shuts her eyes at his tone as she looks down. Might as well be honest with the man. "I..um...actually learn better, by watching others. I mean, I could read a manual time and time again, and it still won't click. Until I watch someone else do it, then it all just fits together....if that makes sense..." She braces herself, she was far to used to people calling her stupid because her mind just didn't seem to work like most people. Then again she wasn't the only one to learn the hard way that some people just take to think differently.

Maxson watches her closely, confused by the way she was acting. He was aware that people learned differently then most. If he had to sit here and show her time and again how this worked he would. It was his job as the Elder right? "Right.." He shakes the thought away. "It's fine, I'll go slower, since you've never used a laser riffle before. It's an old weapon, we don't want something to go wrong and have it explode." Her eyes go wide as he starts to take the weapon apart again. "That can happen...?" She places her hand on her face. "Oh that has to be painful..." "It's killed a few soldiers in the past, but it's mostly from rushing..." She nods along with this, made sense. He takes his time as she watches him. She wasn't sure how long they sat there, but she was aware that if anyone came around. They would turn right back the way they came. They knew better then to bother Maxson when he was working. It was oddly comfortable, watching him work, but after awhile she started to understand it. "I get it...so all that's left is to test it..right?" Maxson nods but slowly looks around. "Not in here, it could cause a fire...follow me." She blinks as she quickly gets up and follows after him. She couldn't help but wonder just what was going to happen next. She still had no idea how this would play out, but she couldn't help but feel nervous all over again.
