kakashi soon defeated zabuza with the water vortex jutsu. After a hunter nin took zabuza’s body, the team made their way to the bridge builder’s home with an unconscious kakashi. The following day, kakashi stirred awake as tsunami was tidying up
tsuname~oh, you’re awake. Would you like something to eat?
kakashi~in a bit...*groan* where’s the rest of my team?
tsunami~resting in another room. Oh, here’s one of them now
kakashi lifted his head enough to see ravi at the door
ravi~sensei?
kakashi~how’re the others?
ravi~ann’s almost killed naruto a couple times with that ninja’s sword. I don’t think we can hold her back any longer without you if naruto keeps this up
they heard screaming before naruto came running in. he quickly used kakashi as a shield as ann came in with the sword in hand and a skewed haircut
kakashi~hold it ann! you’ll end up killing me instead!
ann~that idiot cut my hair while I was asleep!
naruto~you shouldn’t care! You can’t see it anyway!
Sakura and sasuke soon joined them along with tazuna
ann~i’ll make you wish you were never born!
She tried to make a swing, but kakashi got up and used both hands to keep her from swinging
kakashi~you need to stop or else i’m taking the sword away
ann~it’s mine though!
kakashi~not for long if you keep it up. You can get him back later. For now, leave the sword and go take a bath with the girls to fix your hair. No one will be able to move the blade, so you don’t need to worry about it being taken
ann~can I at least maim him?
kakashi~after you’ve calmed down. you’ll end up killing him otherwise
ann~grrrrr....fine...
she pulled back from him and carefully lowered the blade
ann~i don’t know where I am...
ravi~come on ann. Leave the sword over here. Sensei will watch it while we’re in the bath
she led ann over to the door to lay the sword down nearby before she and sakura led her out. Kakashi sat back down, smacking naruto in the head
kakashi~you owe me big, you knucklehead. I was barely able to hold her back. You better have a good excuse to anger her that badly
sasuke~it isn’t that good of a reason
naruto~is too!
kakashi~let’s hear it then
naruto~well, I went in our room to get my ramen cups, and ann was sleeping okay?
kakashi~alright...what was interesting about that though? Everyone knows she likes to sleep if she isn’t training
naruto~well, she had a blanket first off
tazuna~why is that weird?
sasuke~he’s right on that. She never sleeps with one.
kakashi~so, what else?
naruto~well, the blanket was covering her face and she looked a lot like that zabuza guy
kakashi~then you decided to cut her hair?
naruto~ah...yeah that was a bad idea...
kakashi~he might be onto something though. Kubikiribocho is a hefty blade. And yet...ann can wield it just fine...as if she has used it before
he laid back down
sasuke~so you believe him?
kakashi~i guess we’ll see when the girls come back. Walking in on them right now is a worse idea than cutting ann’s hair
naruto~but!!!
kakashi~go eat your ramen before ann takes them instead of killing you
he yelped and ran off

some hours later they gathered once again at the table. ann’s hair was fixed, but was cut short, similar to a pixie cut. She did her best to direct her glare at naruto
kakashi~ann, a moment
ann~what do you need me for?
kakashi~i just need you to look at me
ann~i can’t see
kakashi~shut up about your sight. I know you know where everyone is
ann sighed and turned towards him. Kakashi lifted his hand to cover half her face
ann~so...why do I need to face you?
kakashi~just checking something out. Can you scowl for me?
ann~i don’t know how to
she did anyway without realizing it
kakashi~oh my god...
the others raised their hands up
naruto~i was right!
ann~about what?
sasuke~you look like zabuza
ann~how?
kakashi~you have the same facial structure. Your glare is the same too
sakura~he’s your father then?
ann~No!
kakashi~worse, he’s her unncle
ann~is not!
ravi~why is that worse?
tazuna~you don’t mean...ane?
kakashi~yeah...ann, your name is odd, even as a nickname
ann~what are you talking about? who’s ane?
kakashi~your full name, is annaliesalayoshi momochi. isn’t it?
She vaulted across the table and punched him in the face
kakashi~so i’m right. Why didn’t you say something before?
ann~because no one was supposed to ever figure it out! i’m not supposed to exist in the mist, or anywhere else for that matter!
Kakashi sat up and rubbed his nose
kakashi~is it because of the academy?
ann~there’s that...but there’s more to it
she rubbed her arm and stood straight, keeping her gaze pointed downwards
kakashi~do you plan on telling us?
ann~not really...
kakashi~have you killed a person before you came to the leaf?
ann~yes...
kakashi~have you planned to kill tazuna?
ann~No. I never thought zabuza was gonna be here...
kakashi~do you want our help?
ann~no...yes...i don’t know...
she dropped to her knees
kakashi~did you plan on running off to find zabuza?
ann~i’d just get lost...i don’t know where he is so there’s no point
kakashi~alright...let’s eat first then we’ll talk
ann~okay...sorry for punching you sensei...
kakashi~you do know you hit harder than zabuza, right?

After dinner they sat in their shared bedroom
kakashi~so, considering that you are zabuza niece, there’s a good chance he’s alive because you didn’t freak out when that hunter nin came
ann~his name is haku. he’s, I guess, an apprentice. More of a tool
naruto~what do you mean by tool? he’s a person isn’t he?
ann~he is not regarded as a person. Haku is an accessory with a name. His life is nothing unless he can serve
ravi~that’s cold...even for you ann
kakashi~but she’s not wrong
sakura~were you his tool?
ann~with benefits. I didn’t have to do everything he said, but he didn’t leave me much choice either.
sasuke~so you’ve had the skills of a jounin since we were kids?
ann~yeah. I have the skills to kill everyone if I chose to. Even against the older ninjas for a while. i’m a lot stronger than what i’ve displayed.
kakashi~release 25% of your chakra
ann gave a smirk and stopped repressing her chakra. Kakashi and ravi stared at her
naruto~what happened?
ravi~you can’t feel that?
sakura~feel what though?
kakashi~not all ninjas can sense chakra, ravi
sasuke~i feel something. What does it mean?
kakashi~ann is a lot stronger than she’s made us to believe. A lot
sakura~how bad?
kakashi~say the average ninja is here
he put his hand at chest level
kakashi~i’ve always thought ann was here
he used his other hand and placed it a litter higher than his first hand
kakashi~i would be up here. And ann at 25% is here
using his second hand, he place himself at the bottom of his neck, and then ann at his chin
naruto~that much of a difference?!
ann~zabuza’s a good teacher. he’s taught me everything I know
she repressed her chakra again and rubbed her head
ravi~you okay?
ann~yeah. I think I released my chakra too fast is all. i’m used to just storing it so when I use it I get tired quickly when I can finally rest.
kakashi~alright...back to the situation with zabuza...what are we going to do when he shows up again?
ann~it’ll be about a week, he’ll probably come after me first. I still have his sword after all
sakura~what’s special about it
ann~it’s passed down from one generation of the seven swordsmen to the next. Each of the seven swords has its own ability
naruto~what’s this one’s?
kakashi~it can regenerate itself
naruto~how?
ann~blood. The blade absorbs irom from the blood and can fix itself, no matter how bad the damage is
sakura~a-anyways...if zabuza will fight you, what about haku?
ann~i don’t know much about him. He is strong, otherwise zabuza wouldn’t have considered him as a tool
kakashi~what about strategies?
ravi~didn’t you mention that zabuza could fight without seeing?
ann~it’s because he can do that is how he was able to teach me. We don’t need a lot to know where someone is. Using sound is the entire basis for the silent killing technique
sakura~can you tell which of us breathing?
ann~just barely. You blinking is louder
naruto~just what the hell are you?!
ann~an assassin
naruto paled at her blunt answer. Ann laughed at his silenced
ann~you asked what I am. Without restraints, I am an assassin.
sasuke~how well can you hold up against zabuza?
ann~enough. We could kill each other if we’re not careful
kakashi~well you certainly almost did
ann~he threw the sword at me and almost killed me...twice!
naruto~but that’s what enemy ninjas do!
ann~he’s also my uncle!
naruto~i thought that didn’t matter?
She used her cane and hit him
kakashi~cut it out or the swords gets taken away
ann~what?!
kakashi~we’re getting nowhere if you keep hitting him
ann grumbled as ravi took her cane away
kakashi~let’s assume zabuza will go for you. he’ll probably have that hunter with him as well. Do you know anything about his fighting style?
ann~i know he’s fast and can use ice jutsu. So sasuke and ravi should be a good team against him
sakura~why should?
ann~like I said, I don’t know much about haku. I can beat anyone with brute strength, so I don’t know how anyone can fight on an extended fight. Well, except ravi, but that’s only because we train together
kakashi~i guess we’ll see

after a week of training, kakashi decided that the whole team was prepared enough to go together to the bridge. The following morning, naruto had overslept so the team left him to sleep and headed off. When they got to the bridge, they saw the workers scattered and dying. After speaking to one, they noticed a mist had rolled in and were soon surrounded by water clones of zabuza
zabuza~i’m glad you brought my sword back to me
ann~who said I was gonna give it back?
kakashi~don’t attack ann. you’ll hurt us instead
ann grumbled as sasuke took care of the clones. Zabuza and haku appeared
kakashi~i was right. You are alive, and that hunter was a fake
ann~like you figured it out by yourself sensei...
zbuza~i am alive. And i’ll be taking my sword back. Haku
ann~using him is not you getting it
zabuza~no one asked you brat. i wonder what happened...her hair is cut and she looks like me again...did her team go against her?
kakashi~sasuke, ravi
haku~zabuza?
zabuza~i’ll take care of ann. she’s due for a beating
kakashi~doesn’t seem like he’s too eager to get his sword yet...would it be a good idea to prolong the inevitable with them? I don’t have a problem with ann...i know her strength now...but this kid seems to be on another level compared to the others...will sasuke and ravi be able to handle him?
he watched in disbelief as haku trapped sasuke and ravi in his ice mirrors
kakashi~ann...did you know this?
ann~i don’t know what happened
kakashi~ice mirrors. they’re surrounded and there’s no way out
ann~i swear, everything i’ve told you is what I know
zabuza~what is everything?
kakashi went to lift his headband, but zabuza took a kunai out as a warning
zabuza~don’t even think about it. i’ll go after the old man if you try to save them
kakashi~he’s right...he trained ann so there’s a good chance he was holding back while we fought. Knowing how ann is, he must’ve had to use more of his chakra for her
ann~why’re you holding back zabi? I thought the demon of the mist was more blood lust than this
kakashi~*snort* she calls you zabi?
zabuza~how much did she tell you?
kakashi~you trained her in the art of silent killing but didn’t quite kill all of her sense of morals. We also figured out you’re her uncle
zabuza growled~that explains the haircut...they shouldn’t have been able to figure it out otherwise.
kakashi~is there a reason that she isn’t supposed to exist? Besides not having to partake in the academy slaughter that’s already been changed?
zabuza~you’ll need to kill me to find out. Ann doesn’t know why and will never learn why
kakashi~I guess i’ll need to kill you.
zabuza~good luck
he charged at kakashi to keep him from revealing sharingan, but kakashi blocked the blade with his hand
kakashi~ann warned me that you can fight without sight. I guess you have to with the silent killing technique.
zabuza~it’d have been difficult otherwise, but she can’t hear me unless I let her
he disappeared again
kakashi~ann!
ann~i heard!
sakura~what happened?
ann~zabuza will attack. If I don’t hear him it’ll be too late. will he be serious? If he is then he won’t let me have the chance. I think sensei is coming this way. The footsteps sound like running
sakura and tazuna strained to see through the mist
sakura~i don’t see anything...ann, can you sense their chakra?
ann~the mist is infused with zabuza’s chakra. I can’t tell if that’s sensei or not
tazuna~I see a shape!
sakura~that’s-!
the realization came too late. Zabuza went straight to ann, taking his sword back and holding a kunai to her throat
ann~sensei!
Zabuza pulled her hair
zabuza~shut up brat
kakashi~let her go!
zabuza~not a chance. you’re not gonna do anything now
kakashi glared at him and looked at ann. She had tears down her face and he saw that zabuza had nicked her neck as well
zabuza~i’m sorry for taking advantage of you like this ann. If kakashi doesn’t take any risks, I won’t have to risk you either.
kakashi~what’s the point of risking her life?
zabuza~i’m not soft like you. I know you won’t risk your brats’ safety
he pressed the blade against her neck making her whimper
kakashi~either he really doesn’t care, or he has a great poker face. Ann wouldn’t be acting like this otherwise.
zabuza~just sit still and let the-
they heard firecrackers in the distance, and when they turned to look where it came from there was a puff of smoke before naruto appeared
naruto~naruto uzumaki is here!
Kakashi looked back at ann. He quickly tapped his kunai on the metal on the back of his glove. Ann elbowed zabuza and ran off towards kakashi. He grabbed her and had her stay behind him as he turned back to zabuza in case he was already on the move.
kakashi~are you okay?
ann~i just don’t understand...
kakashi~understand later. The mist thinned because of naruto. I can see sakura clearly. Turn around and start walking. she’ll let you know where to go
ann~o-okay...
she turned and started off

zabuza had turned around to face naruto. From the corner of his eye he saw haku out of his ice mirrors.
naruto~kakashi sensei, why did you let this guy take ann?!
kakashi~now’s not the time naruto
zabuza~you stupid brat. You need to learn your place
he threw several kunais that haku had blocked
haku~let me take care of him my own way
zabuza grunted then turned his attention back to kakashi. He also saw that the bridge builder was holding ann
kakashi~he looks almost relieved that he doesn’t have ann...it seems like he didn’t want to hurt her if it came to it then

sakura~the mist is thickening again.
ann~sensei and zabuza hasn’t moved yet. Naruto got in the mirrors.
tazuna~they shouldn’t come back here again, right?
She shrugged. After a moment more, ann pushed away from tazuna and got her cane back from sakura
sakura~what now?
ann~we can only wait. it’s reckless to try anything else
sakura nodded, not really wanting to agree that all they could do was wait
ann~i hear something. Zabuza could do it again
kakashi came shoving them to the side as zabuza brought his blade down
zabuza~hehehe it’s only a matter of time before you let your guard down again kakashi. that’s when they’ll die
zabuza disappeared once again
sakura~sensei...you’re...
kakashi~it’s alright sakura...it’s not as bad as it looks
ann~sensei, do you feel that?
kakashi~naruto’s seal...is it?...no, it’s still intact. yeah, ann. I need to finish this quickly to get to the others
ann~but sensei
kakashi~he was ready to hurt you ann. I don’t think he’d think twice if you got in the way. Let me handle it and things will be okay
ann~o...okay...
kakashi took out a scroll and wiped his blood on it. Within moments the mist started to thin and kakashi walked off
sakura~can you hear what happened?
ann~i hear growling, like animals. Sensei caught zabuza and is trying to reason with him to stop

kakashi~were you that desparate to use ann? You would have killed her
zabuza~like you’d risk her life
kakashi~but you could have just as easily killed her. You nicked her throat
zabuza~not enough to kill then
kakashi sighed and came closer
kakashi~you can always surrender zabuza. In any case, this ends now
zabuza~haku still lives. It won’t be over until both of us are dead
kakashi~make sure you tell me the reason ann isn’t supposed to exist
he started to focus his chakra to his hand
zabuza~i guess ann’ll unlock her kekkei genkai as soon as he kills me...I hope she’ll be okay

sakura~are you okay?
ann~i dunno...I suddenly felt nauseous...and my head hurts
sakura~did you use too much chakra?
ann~no. I don’t use a lot when I focus on hearing. i’m okay now...hey, that chirping from earlier stopped, and the growling.
tazuna~i wonder what happened

kakashi~the boy...
zabuza~such a good tool
haku had come between zabuza and kakashi’s raikiri. Kakashi tried to pull away, but haku held his hand in his checst, and zabuza began to swing his sword down. Unable to pull away, kakashi jumped away with haku’s body
zabuza~i thought you’d have left him
kakashi~i didn’t have a choice...and I thought you cared enough to not slice through him
zabuza~only enough to be sad that I lost a very good tool
kakashi~cruel...I’m glad ann doesn’t have to live by that ideology
zabuza charged at kakashi, and before he could swing again kakashi knocked him back

ann~did the mist clear? I don’t feel a lot of chakra
sakura~yeah. Sensei and zbauza are fighting...but zabuza looks a bit sluggish
ann~if he’s injured that makes sense.
sakura~what do you mean if?
ann~sensei’s jutsu killed haku...I don’t know if zabuza got injured too...and the ice mirrors are quiet now.
sakura~is it safe enough to go to them?
ann~no. Zabuza has enough movement to attack us if he’s desperate enough
sakura~good point...I just hate that that’s all we can do though

zabuza~he’s fighting differently from before...or am I too injured to keep up with him?
kakashi~he’s at the end of his chakra supply, but I am too. I need to end this soon or else-
he looked to where he had a laid haku, a tapping sound drew his attention away from zabuza
zabuza~gato, what are you doing here? this won’t end well. With all those henchmen he brought along too...
gato~i’m here to finish the job zabuza. I figured you’d have failed me again. oh...look. it’s the brat that nearly broke my arm! I haven’t repaid you for that. Haaa!
He kicked haku’s face then scoffed and spat on the ground
gato~too bad you’re not alive to feel that...

sakura~how are the other? You said that the mirrors were quiet. Can you hear them?
Ann only shrugged. Sakura strained to see across the bridge, but the lingering mist still made it hard to see
sakura~naruto? Naruto!
The fog was clear enough though to see the blond. He turned and waved, smiling
sakura~hey, where’re the others?
Naruto didn’t say anything, and his smile went away. Sakura covered her mouth to stifle a gasp
tazuna~if I go with you to them, you won’t be disobeying your orders
sakura~is it safe to go now ann?
ann~it is now. Zabuza and sensei stopped moving. There are many more people on the bridge now, but not near the others.
tazuna~then let’s go before their attention is on us
ann~you two will be fine without me. I can hear ravi or sasuke moving. you’ll still be well protected
sakura nodded. Tazuna took her hand they ran off to the others.
Naruto~ann, why don’t you join them?
ann~i want to see zabuza...but they stopped moving
naruto went to her and lead her to where zabuza and kakashi stood. When they were near, they saw gato kick haku, then spit on him.
naruto~you jerk!
He ran forward leaving ann but got held back by kakashi.
kakashi~you’ll get killed!
naruto~he shouldn’t touch him!
Zabuza turned a bit to see ann going towards naruto’s screaming
zabuza~ann, i’m over here. 40 degrees to your right
naruto finally calmed down by the time ann got to zabuza
ann~you’re not upset that haku’s hurt? Even after death?
zabuza~he was nothing but a tool. there’s no place in my heart for him other than my desire to use him
ann~is this why you sent me away? So I don’t end up like you? If that’s the case, then why can’t you feel enough for him too?
zabuza~at least I didn’t treat you like him
naruto~but ann said that you practically did. She might not have been your tool but until she came to us she grew up like one. In the end, is that all we are? Just pawns to die by the hands of other people because of something as petty as power? If that’s the all there is, then life’s not worth being a ninja...
zabuza~*sigh* I guess there’s only so much emotion one can suppress...
ann~are you...crying?
zabuza~i was hoping to keep the image of being strong for you. I guess I was just being an a** huh?
ann~what are you doing?
She rubbed her temples
ann~what do you plan on doing?! I don’t understand! This happened earlier when you were about to die too!
zabuza~you’ll understand soon. Boy, give me your kunai
ann~naruto, don’t!
naruto~he’s scarier than you
naruto tossed him a kunai. Zabuza shoved ann out of the way to keep her from stopping him. He caught the knife in his mouth and ran off
ann~zabuza! Stop!
Kakashi jumped towards ann to restrain her before she followed him
ann~let me go! Let me go!
kakashi~you’ll only end up killing yourself this way
ann~like he won’t?!
kakashi~that’s how he wants to go. Who are you to force it otherwise? he’s trying to protect you from being hurt more
ann soon stopped struggling and cried. When it got quiet, she stopped to listen to zabuza shuffling back towards them
ann~stay up...stay up...
zabuza~it’s diffucult...
he collapsed, causing ann to cry again. Kakashi sighed as he rubbed her back to comfort her a little. He looked back up to see the hoard advance towards them
naruto~what can we do sensei? they’re going to attack the village.
kakashi~i don’t know naruto. I used too much chakra fighting zabuza

an arrow came from overhead stopping the thugs. They saw that the village banded together to fight. Naruto used his shadow clones, as did kakashi, and they successfully frightened them off. After they all left, kakashi stood up and helped ann to her feet.
kakashi~i’m going to get zabuza and carry him to the boy for you. Will you wait while I do that?
ann~uh- *hic* uh-huh
he walked her to haku’s body for her to wait, and he went to zabuza
zabuza~finally over?
kakashi~yeah
zabuza~were you really going to take me to ann and haku?
kakashi~yeah
he started to remove the weapons from zabuza’s back, being careful to not jerk them too much. Once they were all removed, kakashi picked him up and started walking back
kakashi~i know I didn’t kill you, but will you still tell me why ann isn’t supposed to exist?
zabuza~no. Others might be listening. If they know, she’ll be taken advantage of
kakashi~how will we protect her if we don’t know either?
zabuza~she only needs to dream
he turned to look at ann
zabuza~you only need to dream
ann~what-what does that mean?
Kakashi laid him down next to haku
ann~sensei, do you know?
Kakashi shook his head~ he won’t say more to protect you. Say goodbye while you still can
he walked off leaving ann to fall to her knees, crying again
zabuza~you will learn soon enough. Dream of us
ann~zabuza...please stay...i don’t...you can’t go...please
zabuza~i love you. I wish I could have shown it more...maybe I can...make it up to haku...
ann cried harder hearing his last breath. After a few minutes kakashi came over and picked her up
kakashi~let’s go back so you can rest. I’ll come back to bury them
ann~sword
kakashi~i’ll take it too. You need to rest first. i’m surprised she’s letting me carry her. I hope she can keep it together until I can properly comfort her. Maybe the others can help her
ann~but...sensei...
kakashi~i can barely feel your chakra. you’re exhausted.
Ann nodded~I thought I heard you say something else though
