Really plot-deflating when you find out that your 24-year-old forum boyfriend is actually a 10-year-old girl. lol The whole point of roleplaying is not knowing who's on the other end of the internet, making up a story with them and rolling with it until one of you stops replying in the forums or the plot gets dull. Enough said. I can understand when people pose as another gender in order to even things out in the forums, but when you roleplay as a girl and your avi is a dude, or the other way around, it's kind of awkward. If you're fine with it, and you knew beforehand what was going on, then cool. More power to ya. But if you're looking for a real-ish relationship, DON'T tell the person you're roleplaying with. Don't compare pics, or give out personal information or even in general, really, for safety reasons. Trust me, the second you do, the romanticized illusion of that person shatters and you suddenly see them clearly. It's fine if you're just friends and you understand that the rp ISN'T real life, but if you're looking for love and attention, just be happy you don't know who's on the other side of the internet abyss. It's happened to me pretty much every time someone decides they want to make the rp relationship into a real one, or when they get emotionally attached because of the rp and start saying that "what we have is real and that you're the ONLY person I'm rp-ing with." ... I'm sorry, but life and gaia don't work that way. You're allowed to have multiple characters and relationships all at once, especially if it's just how you write, like me. I can't seem to not make up relationships between characters. What can I say? I'm a hopeless romantic. The only time sharing pics or contact info is even remotely a good idea (though never advisable for safety reasons) is when the relationship is completely platonic and there's no lovey-dovey feelings involved. You're just friends, so there's no reason to be upset if they're not good looking. And if they're not in your age group, it's all good, the friendship will still be intact. Nuff said.
