Sometimes I like to try reading people. In actuality, it's tough. Some people are easier than others, if you know them well. And for others there's a flux of emotions and uncertainty that you can begin guessing at but few times get correct. Of course those are the strangers.
I think the main reason why friends, especially close ones, are easier to read is that you know them well. Well...that's a given, not really a guess. XD For strangers...there's tons of things to go through. Their disposition, their attitude (the same thing essentially?), their actions, and past experiences with them. That's just a few things, too. You don't know what they're like or how they handle things, or the emotions they prefer to show/keep hidden. With that, you need to consider their physical habits to situations.
Sometimes it can be easy; simple little things can be guessed by common sense. But then it's just as likely to turn around and show another side to the person, making you look like a fool, jerk, or clueless person.
I haven't really tried to test out my skills on that. I just use my common sense most of the time, in my mind.
