A Great Mind
As I opened the book I could sense the words waiting to fill my mind with vivid images and wonderful sights. I opened the book and the first six words sprang from the page and entered my brain. "Imagination is more important than knowledge."
Throughout the book I kept those words in my mind. I could relate to those words, that some of the technology in the world is mostly imagination, the knowledge is added in to actually make it work. I have to agree that imagination IS more important than knowledge. In fact, most great minds imagined a better world with the invention than applied the knowledge later.
After I read that book, I read all the books after that applying that rule. Albert Einstein was a great man and a genius. I would probably infer that he was using mostly his imagination than knowledge.
The next day I entered English class, with the bitter smell of scented candles greeting me outside the door. I sit in my seat behind the football players in the back of the room. I looked up at the board and saw the words, "write a page to turn in for a grade about how obesity is ruining the country." This was the perfect opportunity; I grabbed my pen and began to write. I started off all serious, with facts and percentages about obesity. Actually, the facts that I wrote were all false. I started ranting on and on about how I ate a hamburger and I got so sick that I threw up for a week. I finally turned it in with a smile of triumph on my face. I sat back down smelling the nauseating perfume of sweat and scented candles.
Two days later I got my paper back. I picked the paper up and looked for the grade.
Instead I saw a note with no grade.
"See me after class D="
I could see from the look of that smile or should I say frownie. The teacher meant business.
I sat there in my desk, past the dismissal bell waiting to be yelled at. The clinking of Mrs. Hilliard’s footsteps on the linoleum came closer and closer until she reached my desk.
“Sophie, I want to talk to you about you paper. Those facts are clearly false, for example, 100% of the world population is obese, that’s just plain stupid what you said. I mean…” I blocked the rest of the conversation out and began to sing some Beatles in my head.
It had been about 5 minutes until she stopped talking. She looked at me with a serious look in her eyes and a cocked eyebrow.
“Sophie, are you listening to me?” she asked.
“Huh?” I said, “Oh sorry, well my paper is mostly false on a purpose. I don’t know if you know but a great man, Albert Einstein, said that ‘imagination is more important than knowledge’.” I explained. In my head she would say, “Oh, of course I completely understand A+!” but it did not happen like that instead she got up and went to her desk. She picked up a piece of paper and walked back to my desk and dropped the paper on top. I looked at it and notice the big red words DETENTION SLIP was written on top.
“Fill it out.” Mrs. Hilliard commanded. I took my pen and wrote across it “NO” and took my backpack and ran off.
The next day in my first period class my teacher got a phone call from the principle to send me to his office. I strolled towards the office, maybe the principle wanted to give me an award or something like the. The secretary told me to sit down in the “bad kid” chair. Then I remembered yesterday, of course why am I SO freaking dumb! I had to risk my reputation all because I wanted to try Einstein’s stupid theory, what a dummy I am.
For three weeks I’ll have one hour after school detention. Somebody should really explain Mrs. Hilliard who Albert Einstein is.
