“So what have you been up to since the fifth grade?” Phoenix asked before jamming more pizza into his mouth.
“Well, as soon as my da-I mean, James, left us, my mom had to get a job to support the both of us,” Jules explained, her eyes on her Jell-O as she made it wiggle by poking it with a plastic spork, “We ended up having to move out of our house because we couldn’t afford it. We moved around a lot until my mom landed a good job as on accountant. By that time, we were able to buy back the old house.”
“Wait,” Phoenix interrupted, “So you’re back to living in your old house?”
Jules gave him a small smile.
“Oh, of course. We have the brownies and hobgoblins to thank for that. They chased off any other owner.”
Phoenix smirked.
“So Thimbletack is still running the show?” he asked of the clan leader of the brownies.
Jules nodded.
“So what’s the deal with the seating?” she asked curiously.
“It’s by race,” Phoenix answered with his mouth full, his eyes on his lunch tray for any more food.
Finding a brownie, he let out a shout of triumph and went to jam it into his mouth, but Jules grabbed his wrist.
“What do you mean ‘by race’?” she asked, confused.
A serious look appeared on Phoenix’s face and he placed the brownie back onto the tray.
