Jules had to tilt her head up in order to look Phoenix in the eyes. Phoenix realized this and gave her an award-winning grin.
“I don’t remember you being quite so short, though.”
Jules scowled and slugged him in the stomach.
“I see you haven’t changed,” she said sourly, crossing her arms over her chest as Phoenix chuckled, holding his stomach.
Someone cleared their throat behind them and they both turned to face Mrs. Lukewards.
“Perhaps, Mr. Shadows, you would show your friend to her seat,” she said, pushing her glasses back up to the bridge of her nose.
A blush crept up into Jules’ cheeks, but Phoenix just put his arm around Jules’ shoulders, a big grin plastered across his face.
“No problemo, Mrs. L,” Phoenix gave a two-fingered salute before turning Jules to face the class and steered her towards the back.
Jules felt the death glare from just about every single girl in the room, making her feel about three inches tall and very uncomfortable, so she shrugged away Phoenix’s arm.
“I think I can find an empty seat myself, thanks,” she grumbled as she scanned the room, finding an empty seat next to a pale-skinned, dark-haired boy.
Jules reached for the stool at the two-person lab table when the boy turned to her, his eyes blazing red, and hissed, showing off pearly white fangs. Jules jerked her hand back.
“S-sorry,” she stammered, taking a few steps back, her hands up.
“Alexander sits by himself for a reason,” Phoenix pointed out as Jules backed up into him.
Great, Jules thought, just when i thought my day couldn't get any worse.
