Read EVERYTHING.
If you just skip over to what happens with those your character deals with directly, you may miss something, including Ooc chatting.
Sometimes the Ooc chatting is about the roleplay.
For example, in one of the Bleach roleplays I'm in, I play Aizen.
My other two characters were out of commission after having a draw while fighting each other.
I hadn't been on because I had been at school, and if I had not read everything, I would never get rid of Aizen.
You see, I had gotten tried of playing him, but never told anyone.
Then I noticed that a few of the members thought it would be a nice twist to have the Espada rebel and kill him.
I just said the heck with it.
I was tired of him.
So you see, reading everything can be a good thing :3
