1) On earth, before Transformation: Gangs outside of directory cities. Gangs form to control harder to get goods, like medicine or alcohol. 2) Later: Transcendent/Unwanted either trying to keep the third reality under control or trying to destroy it 3) Deadwood
the stuff to base it on Summary A third existence has been created. The ‘third reality’ is caught between Earth and the Spirit Realm (home to the dead). It is a place of lies and fake copies of humans. The Third Reality is ran by the Directory, a group who hold tight to a policy of executing those they catch who are literally physical and real. If lucky, these few real humans can instead gather in one of the few places in the Third Reality that is outside of Directory control. A place like Deadwood.
The Third Reality is populated by those who used to be human. Earth is populated by the very few who could not get carried over into the Third Reality. Life on Earth is a struggle and things are getting worse as the Third Reality puts strains on existence. Earth and the Third Reality are loosing their connection with the Spirit Realm. ----------------------------
Earth, 2465 C.E.
[x]Earth and Spirit Realm ...but here is what I want to express: between his movement and the movement of the laggard shadow- that second, that syncope- there is the rare kind of time in which I live- the pause, the hiatus, when the heart is like a feather... –VN
The Earth is not the only world or reality. Created by Hespa, the Earth rests amidst the Spirit realm and is far distanced from other worlds. The Spirit realm is where the souls of the dead reside and beings like Hespa, called the Transcendent, sometimes hang in a sort of unconscious limbo to escape Earth. The Transcendent are so called because they transcend the realities and limitations of earth and have strong enough souls to withstand navigating between the spirit realm and earth. Necromancers are very weak Transcendent. Most of these transcendent beings are what humans would call angels, demons, and gods.
[x]Creation "I have discovered it. I have discovered the little crack in life, where it broke off, where it had once been soldered to something else, something genuinely alive, important and vast" –VN
There once existed a being called Alderus. Alderus was not just a being with a soul and a body. Alderus was, as far as anyone knew, the sense of creation. Alderus had a name only because he chose to give one when he saw that beings like him became able to try and comprehend him. He realized then the power of the name. He named himself and those who knew the name felt they had control of his presence. They could say now, "That is Alderus. I know what Alderus is." That power is unrivaled. Even humans get so much from being able to say they know what God is. Alderus disappeared.
Something too pure for any reality, fell broken under the weight of the name. Some Transcendent know of Alderus. Most think of it as fiction. What is Alderus? Whatever Alderus was, some Transcendent think he disappeared because of that very question's ability to be realized.
It is impossible to know if Alderus somehow still exists, in any sense of the word. Likewise, the Transcendent hold it completely irrelevant how initial creation came to be. They almost all deeply feel, not know or reason but only feel, that everything was a chance occurrence and could hinge on something so simple as being named.
[x]World Chaos There was an amazement that to love and to hate were now one thing and one emotion. Or perhaps they could be separated. Hate was as hate had always been, an acid, the corroding venom of which could be borne only because the hater was strong. "I am a good hater." –WG
Anoi, a Transcendent, and some of her followers spent years destroying the Earth around 2100 CE. They did not destroy it completely, but their damage to humanity was grave. Anoi was angered at Hespa and at humanity's condition. She referred to this event as the Cleansing and when stopped by other Transcendents, Anoi grew sick of the futility of her own actions and withdrew into the Spirit Realm.
[x]Hundred Years Sleep "A thinking day." –WG
Society's incredibly weak state after the Cleansing opened up world wide control by strong leaders who came at first as revolutionaries to help save their countries. One by one, their control over the populace grew more daring as loyalists took up arms and nations saw military rule to keep order. Many years of trouble passed and then began the Hundred Years Sleep of new stability and peace on Earth. With distance from the past, many on earth began to praise Anoi's memory.
Companies held many resources and were invaluable in helping humanity recover. Company influence grew until the world was divided into Company sectors. The worlds of government and commerce merged into one bureaucratic dominion. The Directors are the group that has stepped up to oversee interaction between the companies they head and the Transcendents.
[x]State of Directory Earth "Everything has duped me as it fell into place, everything. This is the dead end of this life, and I should not have sought salvation within its confines. It is strange that I should have sought salvation." – VN
Earth, despite the Cleansing, has a lot of modern infrastructure. The Directors built large factories and enclosed living complexes, above and below ground, for workers. These directory complexes are known by tags like DC11R or DC00. Leading directory cities all over the world became partially enclosed modern paradises. These cities served as a way to attract and control a good portion of the population. Most of the directory cities were newly built, leaving the older and smaller cities in a state of disrepair.
Areas outside of directory complexes and factories have a bit more personal independence through neglect. Even if one lives in an area that isn't harshly controlled, they have been raised to fear that anything in their lives could change at any time at a whim of the Directors.
[x]Earth abandoned He leaned over the binnacle and felt how his body shook. "I am chasing after- a kind of peace." –WG
Hespa withdrew from the earth. Some of the Transcendent say her only reason given was that 'it was not hers anymore.' Many Transcendent have spent years trying to figure out this statement. All they have is a small force, the Crescent Stone, which Hespa left as a way to supposedly keep the Earth connected to the Spirit Realm.
When Hespa withdrew suddenly into the spirit realm, the magnitude of her presence being thrust deep into the realm kicked out other Transcendents and returned them to Earth. These, the Unwanted, have not been able to re-enter the Spirit realm since.
The Unwanted are a mixed group. Some try to help humans and restore the Earth to the place of freedom they remember. Most of the Unwanted want revenge on Hespa and to get back in the Spirit Realm themselves.
The Directors were especially powerful after Hespa's abandonment and the return of the Unwanted. Some Transcendents sided with humans in attempts to defeat the Directors. Most of the Unwanted sided with the Directors in a plan to gain themselves peace in exchange for helping the Directors get the world they've only dreamt of.
[x]The Transformation And I would write also about the continual tremor- and about how part of my thoughts is always crowding around the invisible umbilical cord that joins this world to something - to what I shall not say yet. –VN
The Directors work with the Unwanted to use the Crescent stone as a way of anchoring the Third Reality- a new realm between Earth and the Spirit Realm. During the Transformation, the Third Reality was anchored with the Crescent Stone and with the creation powers of the Unwanted to become a sort of reflection of Earth. After completion of the Third Reality, the Directors were left with no influence or connection to the Earth. Earth is home now to the Transcendent and humans with souls too strong to be reflected away.
The Transformation occurred in 2451. At this time, significant development on Earth stopped. Technology is not even as advanced in 2451 as it could have been if Anoi's destruction did not take place around 2100.
[x]Third Reality "Yes, matter has grown old and weary, and little has survived of those old legendary days- a couple of machines, two or three fountains- and no one regrets the past, and even the very concept of 'past' has changed." –VN
The Third Reality is not really real. The people who inhabit this realm were once human, but now they are the Ordinaries. They are fake. Sometimes they seem to switch places and be completely replaceable without true identity. Ordinaries don't have great depth of emotion. They don't get hurt but they never really desire either. Those among them who appear real and completely opaque are shunned and often executed. The 'real' humans are, amongst themselves, called the Dead.
The Bureaucracy of the Directors has changed. In this reality it has become something surreal and irrational like the reality it governs. Everyone’s concept of the past is very limited. Memories of another existence are suppressed. As far as they know, there is no better existence and there has never been anything different.
[x]Lifestyle in the Third Reality "When you go out," said Cincinattus, "note the clock in the corridor. The dial is blank; however, every hour the watchman washes off the old hand and daubs on a new one- and that's how we live, by tarbrush time, and the ringing is the work of the watchman, which is why he is called a 'watch' man." –VN
Objects appear fake and painted. A moved mirror might carry the same reflection regardless of position. Things are not as intensely vivid as real Earth. But at the same time, there's a kind of purity in it. There are no highs and lows, just something that is even and manageable.
Technology is mixed. General electronics are not available for the public. There is no weaponry- some things just don't seem to happen. Horses, wagons, and bicycles are in use. A few modern appliances are available such as fridges, microwaves, radios and toilets. There are basic black and white televisions but no computers. Phones are all rotary landlines. Fashion is mixed and peculiar. Nothing is from any singular time period or culture. Weather rarely reaches extremes. Nature seems a bit contrived and set in place.
[x]Flaws in the Plan "And why is your raincoat wet when your shoes are dry- see, that's careless. Tell the prop man for me." –VN
When the Stone was used to anchor the Third Reality, it was not taken into consideration that the boundaries between Earth and the Spirit Realm were imperfect. This is because of Hespa's imperfection, the need for flexibility so the dead and others could pass, and destruction by Anoi and other Transcendents. This means that the already imperfect boundary is stressed by the Third Reality and that the boundary between Earth and the Third Reality becomes weaker in some places. Problems start to occur.
At first, the only things noted in the Third Reality are the appearance of objects from Earth such as fountains and bridges. Later, it is found that some locations in the Third Reality are what the Directors call 'earth-tainted.' At earth-tainted places the connection toEarth is strong enough that there is hardly any boundary left between the two realms, and this means the Directors have almost no power there. These locations are not listed on maps or publicly considered to exist.
The worst problems occur with what Transcendent and directors talk of as the 'Displacement', when in 2460 humans themselves start disappearing into other realms. Some ordinaries have gone into the Spirit realm or Earth and some of the demi-dead have appeared on Earth or in the Third Reality.
[x]Demi-dead "Leave as is," said Cincinattus. "There can be no disorder here- only a shifting about." –VN
Demi-dead are beings that held so much power, were so believed in and had such strong souls that when they died they only faded into a sort of limbo in the spirit realm as if they were a Transcendent. The demi-dead hung near to earth instead of fading out deeper into the spirit realm like normal dead. Proximity to earth and the strength of their souls is why the demi-dead were kicked between realms once things got very unstable. The demi-dead are part of the displacement.
[x]Deadwood I am not an ordinary- I am the one among you who is alive. –VN
The largest community of the dead is at Deadwood, the famous mining town. This location is the weakest point between Earth and the Third Reality. It is so weak that a lot of the town remains. Some things are from the historic rebuilt Deadwood and others are from the more modern Deadwood town that built up nearby. They do have electricity, but it comes and goes in waves.
The dead themselves do not know why they can't be found by the Directors, but they have theories. Some think there is something special about Deadwood and others think that the Directors don't care enough to bother with them. In reality, communities like Deadwood are too earth-tainted to be controlled by the Directors.
[x]Earth Check-up "Intelligence. Will like a last ditch. Will like a monolith. Survival. Education, a key to all patterns, itself able to impose them, to create. Consciousness in a world asleep. The dark, invulnerable centre that was certain of its own sufficiency." – WG
Population – estimated 300-600 million. ((To give you something to compare it to- 300 million may sound like a lot, but the real current world population is around 6.5+ billion. Highest figure- 1.3 billion in China. The US population is roughly 300 million, or about 5% of the world population.))
As time passed, more Unwanted stopped being interested in their hatred of humanity and faded into what sort of limbo they could get on Earth. The Unwanted who hope to help humanity have been increasingly active. Most Transcendent who can leave for the Spirit Realm do so, but some stay to help or harm humanity and keep a closer watch on the Third Reality.
Cities and the directory complexes have become very popular. As some areas gained more people, they were able to organize. More people meant more skills. Crime increased as people slowly grouped together again.
[x]And it continues And it is obvious to me that I have not yet removed the final film from my fear. –VN
Problems with the Third Reality leave the Unwanted and the Directors in trouble. They want to find a way to stabilize the Third Reality, but some of the Unwanted are simply more focused on getting back into the Spirit Realm or harming Hespa. A small group of Unwanted and Transcendent feel that Earth should be restored and humanity saved from future destruction at all cost. This group is fueled not just by kindness for humans, but also by fears that the Third Reality is going to somehow disconnect Earth (and with it the Unwanted) from the Spirit realm.
Some humans, dead, and the ordinary have felt strange realizations and connections to things. For a few of them, it started long before the Transformation. The Transcendents can feel this too, but it doesn't affect them as deeply as they can comprehend the cause. Everything is slowly ripping, starting with Earth's connection to the Spirit realm and the new Third Reality caught in between.
