Hi, I don't know quite as much as I'd like on motors or generators. What I'd like to know is this:

What would one make or purchase that both converts kinetic energy to electrical energy and back again? Something that is like a motor AND a generator. Is there a name for this?

I have a couple other questions but I will post them when I understand a bit more on the subject.

well you could have your generator work by having it's rotation be pushed mechanically, which would generate electricity, then you could re-route the electricity to push the pedals.

HOWEVER, eventually this mechanism would stop due to friction, and plus there's no purpose to it. I haven't considered whether or not it will short circuit immediately, it throughly depends on the quality of the materials and design.

Well, I was thinking that it could be used in the same sense of a wind-up car. Say you rotate something manually which creates an electric current and charges a battery. Then, you use that stored energy later in the same motor/generator device to do work.

I didn't mean that it would loop around continuously (that would just be a pointless loss of energy to friction, as you said). I guess I didn't word it very well.

Well, really converting kinetic energy into electric is usually means to convert chemicals... stored energy.

I forget the actual names for that. Stored energy, and chemical.

I don't know of anything that stores electricity besides a capacitor. And I'm pretty sure those aren't used for converting electricity back to kinetic. ;3

I need to brush up on that are in particular, so don't take my word for it.
