I've mentioned before that I believe that Near is under appreciated... but there's yet another character that is hardly recognized and I don't believe L could fully perform his duties as the greatest detective in the world without.
Watari, of course! He's been there not only to be L's link to the public so he doesn't have to endanger himself by showing his face, but he's also been L's sweet provider, adviser (i.e. episode 25 when L is seen standing STRAIGHT UP to speak to him, but we never hear what they say), sniper and possibly even parental figure. (another scene in episode 25, when there's the child L and I believe the younger Watari in front of a church.)
Yet, I see few/no threads involving Watari at all, even though up until his end, he's jam-packed with awesome just like L is!
This topic is to give a little love to the only one whom L trusts... and THE most awesome British dude I've ever seen in an anime.

Watari! I'm in full agreement, Watari needs more love. THE best sniper in the world, I'm confident. Who better to help out and take care of our precious L?
Now, I wanna watch ep25 again! (for like, the fifth time!) If L stood straight up like that, I'd say that means he has a lot of respect for Watari.

But seriously, you make a good point. Watari is probably the most underappreciated character on Death Note.

L: I think Light-kun is Kira..
Watari: What will you do?
L: Probably wait just a little longer.

Awww, so good to mention Watari. I almost forgot that he was one of my favorite characters, he was as much a dad to L as Chief Yagami was to Light.
And probably to more kids than just L, he did have an orphanage.

I was sad when he died, but I knew that L would soon follow so all my feelings for the old man were transfered to L, but I did love Watari.

I don't know why but I never really liked Watari. He just seemed a background character to me. But I haven't seen the anime and It sounds like he's in that more. So I guess he's ok

Watari was interesting though because of this fact:
He was a man of few words and he still managed to prove himself important. No dramatic speeches, stupid moments, questionable references (yes, I'm picking on you Light and Matsuda), and best of all, the guy can fight. What's not awesome about a man who can kick some serious tail and still be dignified about it?

Watari was amazing. He was pure ownage.
U gotta give him props as the uber sniper he was. =P
He also kept cool in any situation. A perfect associate for L.
