Hey peoples. Sorry if a thread similar to this subject has already been posted, but I didn't see any.
I'm trying to figure out which tattoo I want to get when I'm eighteen (less than a year to go!) and I'm pretty sure I want it to be something ancient Egyptian. I was wondering if anyone knew if there were any symbols that meant recovery, rebirth, a new beginning, or something along those lines.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm planning on getting a tattoo too in the theme of Ancient Egypt.
What about the Eye of Horus (Wejat). It was worn as a necklace by Pharaohs to worn off evil spirits which made them ill.
Then there's the Sign of Life (Ankh). Obviously it is the symbol of life and in Ancient Egypt life was precious.

Rennie` I'm planning on getting a tattoo too in the theme of Ancient Egypt.

I'm just trying to find something that symbolizes a new beginning of sorts. As you might have noticed in my signature, I've quit self-injury; which is a huge deal for me. I want a tattoo that'll mark a new chapter, fresh start, clean slate, etc. you know?

How about a winged scarab? The form of Khepera as He raised the orb of the sun to begin each new day? It's one of the most famous and potent symbols of rebirth and new beginnings from ancient Egypt. Frogs were also symbols of new life and fertility, and I think that mice were also associated with new life because of the way people saw them emerge from the floodwater silt- they thought they were self-generating in there. But I think what you're looking for is probably more along the lines of the winged scarab.

I read the other day that the scarab was for rebirth. Though I thought the lotus brought the sun; I could be wrong.
In any case, I like the winged scarab, thank you.

No, you're right about the sun and the lotus. There are many versions of the myth- that's one aspect of Egyptian mythology that gives modern folks so much trouble. wink But the ancient Egyptians didn't see any conflict between having several different, seemingly contradictory, scenarios being true at the same time- they were just different ways of looking at the same thing, from another viewpoint. The sun was also brought up riding in a great boat, it emerged from the sky-goddess Nut as She gave birth to it each day, and it was also the right eye of the great falcon Hrw-Wr (Horus the Elder). There were probably other forms of it too, which I just don't know or can't remember right now.
Glad you like the scarab! I think it's magnificent- very beautiful, majestic, and dynamic. It'd make a great tatoo!

I found this picture of the winged scarab. I really, really like this one. OH. And while I was looking, I found a picture of someone with a tattoo of one! *dances*
