you should probaly look at your nearest craft store, and posily look into joining a a crafting or doll making guild. It would be even better if there is some kind or organization off-line near where you live. As far as I can suggest, you will want to think about what kind of dolls you want to make, ceramic, fabric, yard, miniture, plastic. Let me know what type your intrested in and I might have more tidbits of info. smile

You sound like youre talking about dollfie dolls? In the first lolita bible extra they give some step by step instructions (in japanese ofcourse) but alot of it comes down to skill, how much sculpting do you do? im sure you could find some online instruction if you looked really hard, i myself am wanting to try the same thing 3nodding

This website gives you VERY good basics on making ball jointed dolls: How to Make Noah's Dolls It doesn't show how to get do resin casting and all that fun (aka: dangerous) stuff, but the clay models are fun to make if you have enough paitence. Just don't make them in sculpey, for the love of god. Sculpey is very heavy and breaks really easily. You will cry a lot when the doll you spent hundreds of hours on cracks and is unfixable. I reference it all the time when making my own dolls.

Thank you for reminding me about a question I wanted to ask the Guild! 3nodding
I wanted to get into making fabric dolls and the clothes to put on it. I was wondering if someone could help me get started on it. I've made a skirt and headdress set for my kitty plushie from the teddy factory, and it's really adorable, but I want to make something completely by hand.

I love noah's tutorial. I'm currently making a foam centre for a doll, but only have the torso carved, because it's a lot of work, and I have many other projects to do.
BLackberry is right about sculpey. It's very fragile. My best friend made me a doll of herself from sculpey, and though it's nice and thick, and the fingers are hefty, they still snapped, and I had to glue them back on. It's not even a BJD, just a modified porcelain type doll, with a cloth tube for a body, and the head and limbs attatched to that.

well, I do barbie doll customization XD It's kinda fun, since I don't play with my Barbies much any more. I wanted to do My Little Pony custimization, but my little sister wouldn't give me hers DX
Anyway, it's fairly easy and you can use it as practice for painting faces or seeing what a face looks like without paint?

Don't use clay. Use modelling paste, like you can buy in an art store with the paint supplies. Clay is too heavy and brittle to last very long, when you're making dolls.

If you're wanting to know anything about ball-jointed dolls, then go to Den of Angels. Almost everyone on there is helpful, and they have a whole section on diy dolls. http://www.denofangels.com/forums/

Yeah, I've been haunting DOA lately, since I knit a top for a friend's DOD doll, and was hearing and seeing so many dolls from her, that I finally caved in, and bought a tiny. Now I can't stop thinking about how I'll dress her when she arrives. ^__^;;
I have the same username on that forum, so feel free to pm me there, or add me to your buddy list, if you feel alone or lost. I'm still feeling my way around there, though I've been a member since spring. I kinda didn't spend much time on the forum until these past couple weeks.

My user name on there is OddityKit. I've mostly always just lurked around. But I've had a doll before, had to sell her for finacial reasons, but I'm planning on getting a mini sometime in the near future.

But I've had a doll before, had to sell her for finacial reasons, but I'm planning on getting a mini sometime in the near future. Excellent. I usually just lurk, too, but I wanted to be able to browse the marketplace, or use it to advertise commissions, so I was posting for that reason, and also because there are a lot of neat tutorials there. That's too bad you had to sell your doll for financial reasons. I hope you find a mini you really like. I've found that the more tinies I look at, the more I like more of them. XD
