And I can't hold a conversation in Japanese!
I only know a few words, which I throw into conversation every so often... That won't help me much in Japan!

Japanese people are quite nice, if you can find a good person/family that has someone who knows english, they will probably help you learn the language.

PS: Im Envious of you... VERY envious of you... rofl I wanna go...

Whoopsies, you might be misled.
I'm only going for a week with my mom.
We're gonna be tourists.
gonk
Still, it would be nice to be able to hold a conversation with someone in Japanese.

And why do they call it Nihon? Why can't they just call it Japan?

oh well that explains very much.

and japan calls it "nihon" because it is japanese word for "land of the rising sun" or literally "sun origin". and why can't america be called "meiguo" like in chinese?

Since you will be in NIHON whee for a week perhaps you can find a website that has a list of basic terms like "where is the bathroom", "how much is this?" etc. and print it out. OR if you have some cash to burn get a Lonely Planet phrase book or a Berlitz phrasebook that you can carry around. If you do go this route get one that has Japanese in it right along with the translation and pronunciation. That way if you do not understand them or they dont understand you, you can point in your book and they can read your request or whatever.

I give you my blessings in going to Japan. Have a camera on you AT ALL TIMES and enjoy the bowing and royal treatment.

PS. Take some pictures so we can see where you went!

My Recommendations:

Eat Yakiniku (grilled beef), Eat Yakitori (grilled chicken), you gotta go to a conviniece store! gonk You just gotta. Load up on the Pocky, Watch the Salarymen at night eek (Business guys in suits get real drunk so watch yourself they may stumble but will say sorry!); Ummm check out the cellphones if you go to an electronic store. Some have model ones you can buy for like a dollar! Go to the 100 YEN store. It will blow your mind. Try Mos Burger. EAT RAMEN! It will blow your mind how good it is over there!
~~Thats all I can think of...strangely its all food and stores. Look out for men and women in Yukata. It is firework season. You might even find an obaachan (grandmother) on the train with her kimono and little jacket on!

Have a great trip!!

Arigatou, 1koza!

I love ramen and pocky, and I'll murder myself if I don't bring a camera. However I am a vegetarian, so there won't be any yakiniku or yakitori. (I think I have had it before I became a veggie, though).

I'm going to be in Tokyo and Kyoto.

A hundred yen store? That would be so awesome!

Thank you again!

I agree with the person above, you are so sooo lucky, and i am jealous.

Maybe buy one of those tapes or cds that has listen and repeat basic sentences in japanese and listen to in on the plane ride there. That might come in useful if you want to ask where the bathroom is
PostPosted: Fri Jul 29, 2005 3:32 pm

I already know how to ask where the bathroom is.

Ote a rai wa do ko desu ka?
お手亜らい輪度子ですか?

And look, I figured out how to type kana! <3

Perphekt,

Thank you so much for telling me that you are a vegetarian. I have to warn you that Japan isnt a vegetarian friendly contry. Some of my co-workers from the US were vegetarians and they had to stick to their guns about eating things the Japanese made. some of our Japanese friends would test them to see what they would eat and what they would not eat. Its not a concept that has wide spread acceptance. I dont know what type of vegetarian you may be but be aware that many of the soups are fish stock based. Also, Japan is in love with pork. Many things are pork flavored or have ham bits in them. If you eat a plain Okonomiyaki make sure that they dont put Bonito flakes on top as it is fish.

Here are some phrases to help you and any one else who may also be vegetarians 3nodding

Watashi wa bejetarian desu - I'm a vegetarian (see note below)
Shojin ryori [show-zine ryo-ree] - vegetarian cuisine, usually Buddist style
Saishoku-shugi ryori wa arimasuka? - Do you have any vegetarian meals?
Shojin ryori wa yatte imasuka? - Do you serve vegetarian foods?
Watashi wa .. - insert one of the following words here) o itadakimasen. (I don't eat ......)
1. niku (nee-koo) - meat
2. sakana (sa-kah-nah) - fish
3. tori (tor-ree) - chicken (or any type of poultry)
4. tamago (tah-mahgo) - egg
5. gyunyu (giu-new) - milk
6. nyu seihin (new say-hinn) - dairy products

Buta niku - pork
Gyu niku - beef
Tori niku - chicken

These literally mean "pig meat", "cow meat" and "chicken meat", respectively. Nashi means without. So no meat would be Niku nashi; Buta niku nashi; Gyu niku nashi; Tori niku nashi

NOTE: for many people the English word "vegetarian" is already a familiar, well-known word; but in the rural areas or if you talk to an old person, please use the word "Saishoku shugisha" [sigh-shoh-koo shoo-gee-sha], a Japanese word for vegetarian. (Don't worry about this word if you are just visiting Tokyo -- just say "vegetarian".)

-feels so horrible now-
I knew the vegetarian thing wasn''t gonna last for long, so I gave up on Saturday. sweatdrop
But I refuse to eat pig meat, because piggies are my favourite aminal. surprised

Thanks for helping, anyways. Hehehe.
I'll be able to say Watashi wa buta niku o itadakimasen [I don't eat pork] right?
