asks me if I go to school on a camel(yes, I've been asked several times). I'm here to clarify some things on modern Egypt. - we don't go to our work places with camels or horses. - the heat doesn't go above 47C in the summer, not 50 you people (I mean, come on, 50?! geez.) - we don't raise demented cats - we don't walk around with a 'key of life' around our necks - we don't believe in the ancient religion anymore (sorry to disappoint you, but that's bullshit) - we don't walk around topless and in transparent clothes - we don't bathe in the Nile (seriously..) so pleeeeaaase stop talking about us as if we're a group of primary creatures who are only capable of building triangular objects? thanks. now, any questions?

Rennie` I know alot of people in Egypt don't bathe in the Nile but I did witness people doing so last year. Also I was in Taba two years ago and it did hit 50C .... I died gonk that was probably a heat wave. it never goes up like that, and when the summer is so hot, my fingers would be freezing. you also visited one of the very hot villages in Egypt (excluding the south, when we're going nearer to the equator, mind you.) gonk only a few bathe in the Nile, who are mostly poor/peasants, but trust me, a big number of the population have bathtubs at home.

Yes, MA'AM! scream My kinda-sorta-boyfriend is from Egypt, and stereotypes like that drive him crazy too. But the one that he seems to get most often is people who think that a Pharaoh still rules. neutral I suppose human ignorance never goes out of style. Some people, even in America, think that since I'm from Oklahoma, I'm automatically a shoeless, raggedy-clothed, illiterate, unwashed, talk-with-an-accent-like-nails-on-a-chalkboard, naive farmgirl who'll fall for anyone with shiny shoes and a crisp $20 bill. stressed But I digress. Question...where'd the one about the demented cats come from? confused

Question...where'd the one about the demented cats come from? confused I must admit that alot of Americans to stereotype more then anybody else. I have always thought of Egypt as being a Muslim country, I've known since I was 6 that there were no more Pharaoh's. The Americans stereotype me as drinking tea 24/7 *says this whilst taking a gulp of tea whee *, I have terrible teeth even though I visit my dentist every 6 months, they even think that I've met the Queen scream I have never seen her in my life!! Besides she's only a figure head now, she doesn't rule the country (like most people think). Sorry I'm going slightly off topic now sweatdrop but as I've said I have never stereotyped Egypt in a way that iZuu has suggested. iZuu = I was on a Nile cruise last year, I was going from Luxor to Aswan. I should have mentioned that bit. We saw alot of tiny villages and the farmers still used farming techniques that the ancients used eek just fasinated me!

Sorry I'm going slightly off topic now sweatdrop but as I've said I have never stereotyped Egypt in a way that iZuu has suggested. Well...*tries to think of a way to put this without sounding like she's sticking up for ignorance* It's not so much that Americans are ignorant, it's that ignorant Americans seem to get the most attention (and hence seem more widespread). O'course, I say that and then I see a report along the lines of " x percent of Americans can't find Iraq on a map" or "American politicians in office can't pass the exam given to people wanting American citizenship" and I get disgusted. mad I honestly don't have a solution for this other than, as iZuu put it, b***h-slapping some people up in Washington (D.C.) and telling them to get their act together. I think that another factor is that some Americans, who don't want to be lumped in with the ignorance when traveling abroad, pretend they're Canadian. neutral Anyway. It never ceases to infuriate me that people could be so *Navi* ignorant. We must combat these stereotypes so that everyone can understand what Egypt is truly like! scream Rennie- where'd the one about terrible teeth come from? gonk Some of these stereotypes I've never heard of. surprised

Stereotypes are bad. It's a pity that people won't take more of an incentive to realize how things have changed. Ignorance shouldn't be bliss.
I would be curious in knowing where the demented cats idea comes in though.

|WhAt a wOndeRFul WorLd| LOL, that's just like Australia. ;D I'LL SURVIVE IN EGYPT! I thought it'd be hotter because it's mostly desert. x3 -wins-
- But yes, Australian's don't own / ride to school in the pouch of a Kangaroo... well, some people own one... but that's different. - The weather doesn't go above 47C most of the time. - We do actually have winter. And yes, it gets cold! :000! - Yep, we're like the only island that is running out of water... - No, we don't all say "G'day", "Crikey" & "Mate". - Most of us actually hate Steve Irwin. (Fxing asscreep. >.>) - And, we do have cities ... we aren't primitive.
:] See, I hate stereotypes.

These farmers you are talking about are very poor they cant buy any fram methods and such thing but that doesnt mean that all the farmers in egypt use the old methods of farming you may have thought there are a lot because our population now is more 75million people in only 10% in our land and the rest is desert

OMG NEW YORKERS!!!! Yaaay I'm not alone! lol,
But I agree, that stereotypes are bad, but I garantee that every single one of you, within the first five seconds of seeing someone on the street, think, "Oh they're ugly," or "Shes probably one of those stuck up prepy girls"
We ALL do it, you may not admit it, but we all do it. I'll admit one right now, I started talking to Rennie` again because I saw her picture and thought she was beautiful. Yeah, I'm a guy, DEAL WITH IT!
and about the ignorant American thing, it's true, the morons get more attention so everyone thinks we're like that. On behalf of my countrymen, I declare war on france. biggrin I'm very hyper tonight so I appologize for any randomness or just out right rudeness.

There are two things that are infinate: The universe and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe....
Still though, most people stereotype in one way or another. I've heard alot of it from people who ask me about Iraq, mostly because they want to try and confirm what they think to be true of the people. I have met many good hearted people in Iraq as well as the nutjobs. I've seen selfcentered people who won't stand up to defend another section of Iraq because of that section belonging to a different religious clan, while others' help each other in times of need.
To me, there are no such things as races except in D&D and other D20 games. We are humans. No one type of human was born greater than another. Skin color does not say a damned thing about a person. All forms of goverment can become corrupt, and all forms of government have thier virtues when under good/correct leadership.
Although we may have certain traits that are the same with certain stereotypes, we are all individuals. We make our choices individually and live with the consequences of those choices weather good or bad.
