For our spring concert we played this one song called "Into the Storm" I love that song. I got to hit the gong like crazy in one of the parts, we even had a water gong for it. The thing was that the day of the concert there was a thunderstorm raging outside. Now if you've heard the song, or you can just guess by the name, its suppose to seem like a storm. So right in the middle of the song it gets really bad outside. It gets so bad that the lights go out for like a couple of seconds and then come back. Then around the end they start to flicker. When we were done with the song our BD had to go to the podium and say:

"No the lights going off and on is not a special effect"

xD

I have to say that I found it pretty funny.

Just write about an interesting/funny experience that happened to you while you were playing at a concert.

Hah, I like the sound of that.

Well, it's funny when I think back on it, but it wasn't funny at the time (to me, at least). I was in middle school (we were at the high school for our concert though, I think), and I was in my line and on my way up to the auditorium, where we have our concert. It was our turn to go on, but on my way up there, I accidentally dropped my instrument.

When I picked it up, my slide had come out, and the trumpet itself was dented, so I couldn't get it back in. No slide would have meant that I couldn't play, and I hardly had any time before we went on, so I panicked...

Luckily, I found one of my directors, and he pulled out these pliers and fixed it. I ran and got back in line, just in time to go on stage. ninja Literally, it was my row's time to get out there.

On a different note, there was another concert where our line leader didn't know what he was doing, and he led us straight across the stage instead of around, like we're supposed to do, so we all went to our chairs in backwards order and had to climb over each other.

We played 'Into the Storm' last year, it's such a good song. I had a solo too. heart We had a snow storm on the night of our concert. whee

My funniest recent band experience didn't really include the band so much. The 9th grade chorus sings at the upperclassmen band concert and they sung 'It's in his kiss' (or something to that effect) and we were still on stage behind them making fun of them. Something must have been wrong with mr. E that night but he actually joined in.

One of the other percussionests kicked a mallet out of the xylophone, it went 20 feet in the air, and hit the suspended cymbal!
All during a concert for 5th graders.....

Gah...
Please tell me that the capslock was a mistake?

Anyway...

After every Jazz Band concert last year, we'd all play Big Bass Boogie.

It was hilarious.

Nothing funny ever really happened while my band was playing, but for the first two performances of the year the chorus and band perform together.

So the chorus is singing and I see one of the clarinet players suddenly sliding out of her chair. She fell out and nearly fell off the stage. At least the chorus was in front of her so no one saw it! But the rest of us band geeks saw it and we tried not laughing. It was hilarious! Her chair just went out from under her!

Last spring our band, jazz band, and the orchestra (which I'm in) went to Gurnee, Illinois for a contest. After we competed we were going to Great America for the day. We arrived at 7 Am and the band and jazz band were schedualed to play at 7:30 so they did, and then the orchestra got ready when the BD said we weren't schedualed to play untill noon! So we had to sit outside for 4 hours. And there was absolutely nothing to do, we were so bored untill our BD brought us doughnuts!
Finally we played but at the end of the day we had the rewards ceremony and the Band came in 1st place, The jazz band got 1st place, and we got 2nd!!!! We were so pissed!!...That wasn't very funny back then but now we look back and laugh at it..kinda. stare

There was this time, when our maestro was gonna give the signal to start, a person in the audience farted really loud just as we began to play. But since the fart came 1st, it looked like the maestro gave the signal to fart. rofl rofl

In my freshman year, our Orchestra was playing at a concert - I don't remember what song we played, but it must have been pretty vigorous because halfway through the concert, our conductor accidently let go of his baton. It flew point-first, missing the first viola's head by inches... must've been terrifying for him, but it was funny for the rest of us. wink

Every year the highschool choir goes to sing at all of the elementary schools. One of our songs were Rocking Around The Christmas Tree. Since my teachers daughter is in 1st grade, she went to teach that class a dance to go along with the song. It was cute. :] Then after we went to that school, we went to the Kindergarden/preschool, and my teacher let us do the little dance up on the risers. Surprisingly, no one fell off the back or the sides.

Last year in the spring concert for orchestra, my director was announcing the retirement of her husband and dedicated the song You Raise Me Up by Josh Groban to him. The bass player behind me had the box of tissues ready just incase the director started to cry, but the bass player had horrible allergies. So she passes the tissues to me to give to the teacher, she takes one out of the box, and that was the last one, so she threw the box back at us and it hit my cello just as I got ready to play.

One year I was watching the concert band play and all of a sudden I saw a cymbal in slow motion go flying out of the poor kid's hands and onto the floor. He stood there, mortified, with the strap in his hand and no cymbal attached.
Another year we had a siren for one of out songs and we didn't warn the audience, half the people rushed out of the audience during the song.
Another time, I was performing with a few others and we had out marching band uniforms on. I had a grey shirt on underneath, and apparently my fly was down and my shirt was sticking out for about a thousand people to see.
Then, of course, there's the old 'surround sound' effect when one half of the band is a beat ahead.
One time I slipped while we were doing the cadence into a football game and knocked out at least 10 people, but that was more funny than anything else.

In full orchestra/choir at school, we had a big cutoff during The Hallelujah Chorus. A clarinet played two eighth notes because he came in a beat or two late. Yeah... It was pretty bad. The choir was complaining, the band kids laughed at the clarinet (because he has a reputation to do such things), and the orchestra kids thought it was one of them (they kinda suck.... only the top chairs practice and all of the bottom chairs rely on them.). It was pretty bad.

Also, in another orchestra I'm in, we had a concert. A percussionist had a cymbal and the strap broke. Because of that, there was a big crash. There was also another instance where a violin smacked my music stand and the sound of that was recorded on the tape. Good times, good times....

It's not THAT funny, but at our last concert, we were about to start and then the podium just... collapsed. A few people saw that it was gonna happen, including one of the directors from another school that came to watch. He was gonna do something about it but he forgot. That was the last time our band director let a student set up her podium..

Though, I was wishing I was the one who did it. Not that I hate the band director. She's nice. But still.
