Y'know, i've looked at j-pop (or its artists, at any rate) up to this point as frail songbirds that only wish to sing their song for the public. Then i saw the videos for Nani Tamaki's Prayer, Minmi's Step, and Kumi Koda's Shake It, and thought many different things differently. The first is that these J-poppers have rhythm and can dance like nobody's business, and the second (which really came to mind after the Kumi Koda video) is that they're very sexual(ESPECIALLY Kumi Koda, which if you ever saw, you'd say...wow...O.O) At that point i got to thinking, how come they can get away with that kind of stuff there, but not here? And is the entire world of music becoming of sexed up peoples? So discuss, have you ever had any previous conceptions of Japan shattered? If so, which ones and how? And what do you think of the state of music today?

I did get dissapointed about jpop when I learnd fmore of it. I thought they were just excellent singers. But when I found out they wear loads of make up and rediculous clothes, they remind me of clowns. I HATE CLOWNS. I refuse to watch their videos unless they look like people.

You have to remember that this is also the same country that has the worst sexual harassment problem. The main reason is they have somewhat lighter rules when it comes to sex. Another example? They are legal by age of 16, as opposed to our 18. Its just their cultural differences, that makes it seem more acceptable to them. Besides, we have some pretty bad stuff here too, and Im pretty sure you know that wink

I like Minmi's music.
Japan is Japan. Their style and clothing are way different than what the west has. Japan=cutesy, dress up and that is just that.
*Mai Uzari~ you said that Japanese are legal at age 16...you mean as in getting married/adult intimate stuff or alcohol? I thought it was 20 hence Seijin-shiki (coming of age ceremony) and being able to buy alcohol at the local combini.

By legal age, I mean for nudity/sex videos, etc. Here, all women in them have to be 18. I dont know if this is true(I read it somewhere) but I heard this limit is 16 in Japan.

No conceptions of Japan shattered that I can think of at the moment. Although at one time I did refrain from listening to Japanese music because I was getting depressed of always having to look up lyric translations and I was kind of looking for something new to listen to... then I found the Finnish band Nightwish! heart

This is probably a really stupid misconception of Japan, but...I thought there were more vending machines on the streets than there really are. I know Japan has a lot of vending machines, but in five years, my view on that changed from thinking they had slightly more vending machines in America to thinking they had one every two feet. My recent trip to Japan showed me reality.

[Alissa] This is probably a really stupid misconception of Japan, but...I thought there were more vending machines on the streets than there really are. I know Japan has a lot of vending machines, but in five years, my view on that changed from thinking they had slightly more vending machines in America to thinking they had one every two feet. My recent trip to Japan showed me reality. Ah, the sweet sweet Vendys. Its so easy to buy Alcohol from vendings. Once there was this Vendy which sold Highschool girl underwear. They said that it is real genuine school girl underwear which has been worn before, they took it away because they lied or something.

The only band that i will listen to Forever without getting bored with. The new single Clever sleazoid, i'm afraid i havent heard it yet. But i will do soon. I've suddently become addicted to: Garden, Marmelade Chainsaw, and Dead tree. I really don't understand Mana sometimes, but he can sure fool a hell lot of people with his Cross Dressing Schemes.
