Okay, so even though this is only my uh... like, third post in this guild I have a really big question to ask all of you who have experience in this area.

I'm trying out for junior Drum Major soon and would like to know if anyone has any advice or tips they'd like to tell me. I'm really nervous about this too and I'm in no way one of the best players or the most outstanding soloists or anything (I haven't tried solos...) ... so keeping that in mind.... uh... help? sweatdrop

Practice keeping a steady beet. My band's drum major sucks, because he will start out at a good pace with his whistle (God I hate the whistle D=), and then he will slowly start to slow down... and it really annoys me. lol. Does that help?

What are some things your drum majors do that could be done better? Maybe that'll help me get an idea of what I should do and how.... sweatdrop

That's what my new drum major does too...except we never use a whistle...But, I'd go with what he's saying...try conducting to songs (instrumentals preferably) to get yourself some practice in, and in no time you'll do good! I wish you the best of luck!

I just tried out and made drum major in my marching band. My best advice would be to watch yourself conduct in the mirror. The more natural and relaxed you look, the better you'll look to whoever you audition for. Just try to look relaxed while on the podium. It really helps!

I agree with Hari-Ito. Also, video taping yourself conducting helps as well because you can go back and rewatch what you need to improve upon so you are conscious of it while conducting.

Do you need help with stance, beat, emotion, ques, warm-ups, or teaching? I made it to the final round for auditioning for drum major, so if you need any tips, you can PM me. :"]

Thanks for the advice. Try outs are tomorrow, and there's only one spot. 5 of us, including me are trying out and I'm just really nervous. I've got everything down but do you have any tips on keeping yourself relaxed while conducting? I tend to tense up my shoulders a lot, my BD commented on that during one of our practices and I tend to take my arms out too far, like when conducting in two, the first beat my arms are out too far. Any advice for that? sweatdrop Thanks for your help!

if you want to stay relaxed when your cunducting, let yourself get into the music, that works for me really well when im trying to keep the beat, but if you cant do that and stay right, then dont do that.
as for taking your arms out to far, just pretend your in a box that only goes out as far as your arms are supposed to go, it works with Karate, it should work with drum majoring to.

Thanks for the advice, Kokihi. We had tryouts today and I find out if I made it tomorrow.

I am also aspiring to be a drum major two years from now in my sophmore year. Try to get the current drum majors to teach you a few tips. My best friend's sister is a drum major and she is going to help me.

Also, watch them. Watch them at practices and see how they do it. Is there some way that they move their wrist or steady their legs? Watching someone who has done it for 2-3 years if they started as sophmores like in my school is good for you.

I got help from my big sis, who was drum major, but alas... I did not make it. The most unlikely person got it, and I was really confused about that.

Ah well... auditions taught me a lot of lessons. And the interview question they gave took me a while to answer. They said it was gonna be hard, and they were right...

I kinda want to be a drum major, but my problem is I like marching too much!! Everybody I know that has been a drum major does it because they hate marching, is it true for you guys too?
PostPosted: Mon Jun 11, 2007 8:10 pm

Wasn't for me. Marching is my LIFE! I'm kinda glad I didn't get it... I love marching. In my band, if you don't like marching you're probably more likely flagline/colorguard material. All of the ones who hate marching are in colorguard.... well, if they're female.
