Here's a thread to post and discuss poetry, music and all things bardic. Feel free to post lyrics, poetry, links to music, etc... but please, do try to remember to credit the person who wrote it, whether it's your own work or someone else's.

Oh man, I really want to post my favourite bardic song, because it's beautiful, but I can't! The person who wrote it (I have no idea who that is) decided that it could be sung freely at any event by anyone, but the gentle didn't want it written down. I believe it was an experiment to see how it would last/change over time but I don't know for sure. It's a wonderful song, though. It's called "Born on the Listfield" if anyone has heard it.

I thought the rule on that was that you can have the lyrics to learn it, but you're expected to sing it from memory. I'm pretty sure I have a copy of that in my Calontir bardic book... I may be thinking of another song though. There are some bards who are persnickety about that. They want their work to be shared in a more traditional way--the Oral Tradition, that is. They don't want to see someone singing their song around the campfire from a songbook.

I'll look for my bardic book and find out.

Hmm...maybe that's the case. Or maybe it's the same song and the story behind it changed. lol. smile

Turns out I was thinking of a different song.... though I think Master Andrixos wrote Born on the Listfield too... I could be wrong. But the song I was thinking of was Recquiem for a Huscarl. I have heard the other song, but I don't have it in my book.

[Edit: Looks like I was wrong on both counts. Not Drix... it was written by Ivar. And he doesn't want it written, recorded, transmitted, etc. It can only be passed along orally. ]

3nodding I didn't know who it was by but I was fairly sure it wasn't supposed to be passed along in any manner but orally. Love it though.

Katriana's Songbook at http://www.angelfire.com/ks/tomes2/songbook.html has lots and lots of popular Calontir songs (and songs that didn't originate in Calontir but are popular here, as well). Born on the Listfield isn't in it, of course, but there are lots of other good ones!

This is another one of my absolute favourite songs at bardics. I think that it's originally done by the Arrogant Worms, but don't quote me on that. smile

The Scotsman

Well a Scotsman clad in kilt left the bar one evening fair
And one could tell by how he walked that he'd drunk more than his share
He fumbled round until he could no longer keep his feet
Then he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street
Ring ding diddle iddle eye de oh
Ring die diddl-ee eye oh
He stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street

About that time two young and lovely girls just happened by
And one says to the other with a twinkle in her eye
See yon sleeping scotsman so strong and handsome built
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt?
Ring ding diddle iddle eye de oh
ring die diddl-ee eye oh
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt

They crept up on that sleeping scotsman quiet as could be
And lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see
And there behold for them to view beneath his Scottish skirt
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth
Ring ding diddle iddle eye de oh
Ring die diddl-ee eye oh
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth

They marveled for a moment then one said we must be gone
Let's leave a present for our friend before we move along
As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon tied into a bow
Around the bonny star the Scot's kilt did lift and show
Ring ding diddle iddle eye de oh
Ring die diddl-ee eye oh
Around the bonny star the Scot's kilt did lift and show

Now the scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled towards a tree
Behind the bush he lifts his kilt and gawks at what he sees
And in a startled voice he says to what's before his eyes
"Och! Lad, I don't know where you've been but I see you've won first prize!"
Ring ding diddle iddle eye de oh
Ring die diddl-ee eye oh
Oh lad I don't know where you've been but I see you've won first prize!

Hee! The scotsman. Always a classic. Gaijin32 has a recording of it done by the Irish Rovers. Who or where it originated from is a mystery to me, though.

That song inspired a competition at an event my group held back in April of '04... wink We had a 'Best Male Legs' competition, and the winner won........ a blue ribbon. rofl

Hehe! Yup, I have a boatload of Irish Rovers songs. I DL'd most of them while I was still on Roadrunner, back in Milwaukee. Did wonders for my on-PC music library. They have got to be one of my favorite Celtic bands. My dad's also a huge nut for Clan And Drumma, or 'Children of the Drum', as it translates. Wow. eek The layers of music they can build with different kinds of drums and bagpipes...I'm in awe of those guys. I'd go to see them live...in my kilt. Regimental. Seriously.

I have an inspired idea. I remember quite a few verses from the song 'The Drunken Sailor', but I wonder if I'm remembering all of them, or if there are more. Here's my list of what to do to the drunken sailor. Which good gentles can help me patch it up, please?

1. Tie him in a knot to the running bowline.

2. Put him in the scuppers with the hose-pipe on him.

3. Pull out the plug and wet him all over.

4. Pump out the bilge and make him drink it.

5. Shave his belly with a rusty razor.

6. Put him in the longboat till he's sober.

7. Give him the hair of the dog that bit him.

8. Put him in bed with the Captain's daughter.

With a mighty, pirate-y Arrrr! pirate

9. Hang him from the mast like a Jolly Roger.

10. Soak him in oil 'til he sprouts flippers.

11. Keelhaul him 'til he's sober. (I realize this one is similar to 'Put him in the longboat...' I couldn't say if it's a new stanza, or if it's just an alteration....)

Anyway...I found these on The Sea Dogs' CD, so that's where credit is due. biggrin

Hehe! Those are good, Kevin! Now, with the hanging from the mast bit, is that by the wrists or ankles? pirate
