But... I thought it was going to be Paulo. And it would just be cheap to kill Charlie now that we KNOW Des has been saving him on a daily basis. What, does Desmond get lazy?

YES! I love Charlie, but I have been waiting for him to die. It is just what is right for the story and I don't think they are killing randomly. They are slowly killing more and more because how long can this show last? five seasons at the most... you have to be reasonable.
Only a small amount of people are going to live and the dramatic effect his death will have is great. poor Claire.
