Side note, can anyone tell me why the US atleast celebrates St. Pattys day and no other St.s day? Just wondering what was so special about this St.

dakotarayne: That's a good question. I went to a catholic school, so we celebrated many other saint's days, but I'm not sure why the general population celebrates St. Pattie's Day. Then again, there's Valentine's Day which is supposed to be a celebration of St Valentine. I think it's just the luck and love factors involved. People probably just liked the idea and adapted the days to suit the general public.

There's a large amount of Irish descendents in America, since the majority of the first indentured servants were Irish (before slavery caught on). St. Patrick being the Irish saint, the day came with them. And, hundreds of years later, like St. Valentine's day, it was seized upon by the greeting card industry as a way to make a quick buck.

So now, Irish families celebrate simply because it's "their" day. My extremely large Irish Catholic family are all getting together tonight for corned beef and potatoes. And everyone else uses it as an excuse to get completely smashed... just like Valentine's Day is an excuse to eat chocolate.
