Well, once my band got screwed out of getting 1st place, all because they played a rock song instead of a classic marching song. U see all of the other bands and they'r out of line, step, and r too close together. My band was in perfect step, lining, and spacing... and sounded much cooler! But the judges didn't like the song we played, which was a rock song... that was messed!
So how 'bout it. Did ur band ever get screwed over? (i hope that there hasn't been a forum like this... sweatdrop )

I don't mean to offend any big bands out there, but this is how I feel: What I notice, is that when large bands go out on the field, they put their best marchers and players up front and the worst in the back. Unfortunetly, for my band, we're small, but we have almost always perfect stepping and we play very well. When we sit in the bleachers and watch the bigger bands go, the back has very bad stepping issues and somehow, they get way higher scoring than us when it comes to marching. I don't get it, so could someone explain it to me, please?!

Same case...we marched absolutely perfect, we played good marching songs that people might've recongnized, and everyone was cheering for US when we marched by, but nooooo.....somehow, they snagged first place...and they were @$$holes about it too! They were in front of us and were booing and jeering us as we were still marching, saying how much we sucked....

at our final band competition last year, we got very much screwed. first, the band forgot to tell the color guard it was time to go to the field, so we had to run a mile before the first-round show even started. it was the middle of a hot day, we were dehydrated and tired, and our show basically bombed, but we somehow managed to make it to the final round.
we were randomly picked to go first. this time, our performance was the best it's ever been, but they lowered our score to make room, just in case the other bands did better. our second score was LOWER THAN OUR FIRST!!!! and we were put in third place, our score a couple points (that's a lot) below the 2nd and first places', though we did just as good, likely better, than they did. twas very screwed up.

Reina_Vash Well, once my band got screwed out of getting 1st place, all because they played a rock song instead of a classic marching song. (i hope that there hasn't been a forum like this... sweatdrop ) You must not get how they do the scoring for marching competitions, then. The judges don't base scores off of what genre the music is. They base it off of how well the music is played, as well as how well it goes with the marching. razz I HIGHLY doubt the first place band had that much spacing problems. Get over it... I think you're just mad. Our band DID get screwed. We have proof, and it was all over the newspapers. We were doing pretty well into the year. The time for UIL came. (UIL is in Texas.) We went and played, receieved straight ones, which permitted us to go on to AREA and have a chance at STATE. Well.. About 3 days before Area, the band directors recieve a call that we had been disqualified. It was an uproar. There was the really big whore in the Colorguard. She marched at UIL while failing a few classes. Now, in Texas, the UIL rules state that if ANY member of whatever team is participating in UIL is failing any classes, the WHOLE team will not be permitted to go. It made us mad. Then we find out how it happened. Our band director rode her bus. He told her she could not go, but she went anyway. When we were about to march, a few of the girls told her NOT to march, but she told them that the band director said it was okay. As we came off the field, being the idiot she is, she waved at the person in charge of keeping tabs on her grades in the stands. Yep. Screwed us. For concert season, we could not win Sweepstakes award, no matter how well we did, because of that incident.

Heh.... Members of our band aren't even allowed to talk about what happened to us at BOA Nationals in Indy for our '04 show outside of the privacy of the band room.

My band gets screwed so bad its rediculous. For many contests the judges won't even give us a chance because we had a bad streak for a while, but we were really good this year. They would talk about us behind our back and the judges were saying they already knew who they were going to rank well, and we weren't one of them. Their decision was based solely on past experience, even though we were better than most of the bands they gave high ranks.

YEAH! oiy... here i go xp
Last year (04/05) Our Marching show was Grease and at districts we were 1/2 a point away from a state qualifying score. stressed We got nailed by the General Effect Judge... Come on! It's a Grease show!!! It's all upbeat and happy, but we even put a slower jazzier Beauty School Drop Out in it!! ... we got nailed for general effect!!! ugh! .5 away... I mean the crowd loved us!! They were totally into the songs, dancing, singing, doing the hand jive... heck people in the audience even let off pink and black (pink ladies and t-birds) balloons once we finished our last song... how can you say that we didnt have generall effect... what do you want? Us to have a crucifiction on the 50 yard line question exclaim question exclaim What do you want us to play a totally hard rocking, horns blaring, awesome power song, then play "4 Minutes of Silence" question exclaim question exclaim ... Heh, sorry, just remembering how peeved we were. We all spent the next class hour (including the director) ways to give the Generel Effect judge 'general effect'. sweatdrop I swear we're not hostile anymore!
It was kinda funny though, the other day at practice, I found out that not everyone has let it go. My director can't wait til we start marching our Stevie Wonder show and he was just like.. "We'll..It'll... *sigh* its going to be great." Random Band Member:"We'll show 'em General Effect!!" Driector: "Yeah, will give 'em general effect alright." Other Random Member: "I still think we should do the crucifiction!"
