My friend and I were discussing over Lost one lunch period, and the our discussion came to what we thought the Island was. I didn't contribute much, agreeing with Desmond's line, "We are stuck in a bloody snowglobe," but my friend decided to go deeper, and think.
She thinks they're in the Garden of Adam and Eve.
I thought it was too religious, but she points out the show has many points to her theory, some being religious references:
-The Bible found by Mr. Eko, in The Other 48 Days, when the Tailies discover the cave. -Jack discovers the caves for the first time, and inside are two corpses. Locke comments, "Our very own Adam and Eve." -Mr. Eko and Charlie are both very religious (Mr. Eko being a priest...somewhat). -According to her, she says that the Garden is supposed to be a "tropical paradise." -The Island holds various amounds of plentiful fruit. -Claire names her boy "Aaron," a religious name. -There are lots of Father/Son conflicts with the survivors. (Jack, Sawyer, and Kate {though she is a girl}, etc) Is it possible that could relate to "Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit"? -Hurley's mom mentions Jesus in one episode (I think it was Everybody Hates Hugo), in which she says, "Maybe if you pray every day, Jesus Christ will come down from heaven, take two hundred pounds, and bring you a decent woman and a new car."
There were some more things...I just can't remember them. xD
It's not my theory, I just wanted to get it out in the open, so please don't bash me if you don't find it believeable.
Any comments?

I like that theory. Even though it is very much religious, I think it could be used in a way that wouldn't make non-christians angry. I'm not christian and I think it's an exciting idea. A hidden paradise, the first garden.. impossible to get to.. the Others guard there secret like crazy and only let in the 'good' people. Hum de dum.. sounds definately feasible to me.

It's an interesting theory. And although it's religious, Lost actually has a lot of religious elements in it, so it's not improbable.
Some more spiritual/religious elements: *Locke "communes" with the Island and knows where to find Mr. Eko, among other things. *The phrase "God loves you as he loved Jacob" in the brainwashing room *The concept of the Others only taking innocent children and having a list of people who are "good enough." *Healing powers of the Island *The whole theme of guilt and sin that runs through most of the characters' lives.
I do wonder how the whole having-babies-will-kill-you thing would fit in with that theory.
Good thinking!

It's not a bad theory. I really like the spiritual/religious elements of the show. But why would they end up in the Garden of Adam and Eve as opposed to say Heaven or Hell or Purgatory?

Kira Sunfire I do wonder how the whole having-babies-will-kill-you thing would fit in with that theory. Good thinking! Well you see thats sort of a big point of interest... and it does sound more likely to be Eden than any kind of afterlife (since you couldn't possibly have children in the afterlife if you were dead). God said to Adam and Eve: Go forth and multiply. So the whole mothers dying thing could contradict it being Eden. It's also possible that it's Atlantis (although less of a possibly due to the strong Christian overtones in the show) because the four toed leg of that statue did appear to be in a classical style. Another idea the island could be is the South Pole after global warming. A crazier theory but it would explain... hmmm... actually dont Polar bears live on the North Pole? Well whichever one they live on would explain the Polar bears slightly. I mean - why specifically bring Polar bears to a tropical island?

The island isn't in the Bermuda triangle, so it doesn't matter.
