(sorry if this is a repeat or something xD) In school a little while ago i was reading my shonen-ai book Loveless in school right? Alot of my friends already know that i read alot of books like this. One of my so called friends came up to me and snatched the book from my hand and proceeded to stomp on it and then got in my face and said "You shouldnt be reading this gay s***! You shouldnt be reading at all! You should find a guy and get laid!"
Discussion:
1) Has this ever happened to you before? If so, shouldnt this be sort of... wrong? 2) Why do you think people act they way they do? 3) Are some of your friends more accepting of what you like than others?

Ugh, I hate it when people do that. Just because they are against the love for Yaoi/Shonen-ai, doesn't mean they have to make everyone else see things the way they do! >:[

Oh my lord! Did you report him to your teacher or principal? Because that was technically sexual harrasment. Not to mention you should get him to buy you a new copy!

Wow, I can't believe that! How cruel, and not to mention rude mad . That person had no right to do that, and the teacher shouldn't just stand there and not do anything. Just becuase you like something and they don't doesn't give them the authority to pull that crap....

This is a new one for me
It hasn't happened to me but I can say this; I guarentee that person looks at/reads things with straight couples.
People act the way they do because quite frankly, people suck. The rare that don't, be friends with them, mate, populate, destroy the ones that suck, world will be good until the ones that aren't quite as good come, repeat XD
All of my friends could care less about what I do and like. If I don't negatively affect them in any way, they're cool. Except one, Alejandro burning_eyes

honestly it's happened to me a couple of times and I just threaten to beat the s*** out of them after school where and when and they never show. P.S. this won't work for everybody. Every one at my school is afraid of me and will buy me another book or I report them to the school district for sexual harasment and arsenal(I think that's what it is?) and normally they dissapear for a few days and come back yelling at how much trouble they're in.

If that were me the homophobic, sexist, and ignorant "friend" in question would have been bleeding on the floor in a heart beat stare

1) No, this hasn't happened to me before... and I'm glad, 'cause I would've lost it then. and. there. Seriously, I'm getting mad just thinking about it. I'd probably been really pissed if that was my teacher, too.... 2) They only act that way because they're close-minded and think they have the right to force people see their way... jerks.... 3) Most of my friends either love yaoi along with me, accept that I like it but avoid it themselves, or... don't know I like it in the first place. The latter will probably at least tolerate my liking since they've known me long enough, I guess....

O__O that's horrible! You can read what you want, and that's not their business! I've never actually read yaoi in school, or well, not so that people saw it (I did once in assembly xD It was SO boring ) but I've read it on the train etc... I had some people stare at me and talk about me (some conservative muslim men, I think, were staring at me and talking in some foreign language.. they looked pretty annoyed ^^ ) But I've never been confronted like that about it. I'd probably be pretty pissed if someone damaged my yaoi, that stuff is hella expensive, seriously! eek My friends are accepting it, I've converted one of them, and one is well on the way to fandom (Still stuck in the fluff-swamp though ^^ ) People probably act this way out of fear, I think. It's like a cookie factory. If a cookie isn't cut into the designated shape, they don't want it... sounds really horrible but is sadly true. It's all part of the system.

Thing is, there are rules set in place in schools to protect student property. There are also rules in place that say that you are prohibited from being pornographic materials on school property. As long as there weren't pornographic images in this particular manga, and so far as I know, Loveless doesn't have any such images in its entirety... Anyway. You should report to the next higher up in authority. You have rights as a student. You should also report the teacher who stood by and did nothing. And if the school administration does nothing, it really is something you should take up with your county's school board. Especially if it was because it was 'queer fiction' that you harassed about it.
That aside, I've never had such problems with friends in that regard before. I have a very tightly-knit group of friends, and they are either queer in some way themselves, or queer-supporters.
If someone snatched my book away from me because it was "gay," I would definitely want to hit them, because mistreating books is inexcusable, and for being intolerant of gay literature, even it if it is manga. Manga is a type of literature, period. "Graphic Novel."
You can still do something about it. So please try.

That's terrible! I can't believe they'd do something like that!! Just because they're homophobic doesn't give them the right to be rude to people who aren't! All of my friends are okay with yaoi and yuri, so nothing like this has ever happened to me. But if it did, I'm sure I'd be very upset.

wow, I'm surprised, that never happend to me. I used to read alot of manga at school, most hard core yaoi, no one ever said or did anything to me about it, they just ragged on me for wearing cat ears. . .I feel your pain tho, my brother used one of my clover manga as a couster for his beer, completly ruind the cover and refused to replace it, it was a sad day!
