Well, it's actually my least favorite holiday. Simply because even when I have a sweety my single friends all seem miserable. Especially since my situation this year is pretty bad, my boyfriend's unable to see me or me him (though if you're the praying type please say a prayer for his recovery).
HOWEVER! heart
Nessa's stoked as we've all seen from the fab avatar heart
So here's a thread to get you all in the mood! Vicarious Love. I got the idea when watching soaps (yeah I know) in which one of my favorite couples, Tad and Dixie from All My Children, had a sweet moment before they did the soap thing and killed Dixie.
Who are your favorite Fictional or Famous Couples? I'd have us include real people we know, but it might be fun to focus on couples we all know, so celebrities and fictional chars work best (though real stories of love are encouraged).
Nominate your favorite couples and maybe we can put up a poll in the thread and vote on them!
Here are some of mine:
1. Jane Eyre and Rochester from Jane Eyre (novel)- A love story which isn't focused solely on looks, intellectual equals who triumph over incredible adversity.
2. Scarlet and Rhett from Gone with the Wind- Chemistry! And there's something adorable when Rhett tells Scarlet he has a hard time catching her between husbands
3. Colonel Brandon and Marianne from Sense and Sensibility- There is something so sweet about a guy who just loves a woman.
4. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward- For a long lasting hollywood marriage.
5. Aeris and Cloud from Final Fantasy VII: She's a healer, and he has a really really big sword. If you've played the game you probably understand the infinite appeal behind this couple.
6. Eros/Cupid and Psyche from Greek Mythology: Can't be valentine's day without Cupid. Eros/Cupid shot himself with one of his own arrows and fell in love with Psyche, a mortal. However not all the versions of their myth ends happily.
7. Batman and Catwoman: When most couples fight they don't draw blood. What I like about this coupling is that Selena really does love Bruce, even though their alter egos are mortal enemies.
8. Rick and Evie in The Mummy- I was so happy they were still together in the sequal... they had really good chemistry.
9. V and Evie in V for Vendetta: There was something strangely appealing here...
Well, those are the ones I can think of at the moment, what are some of yours? heart heart

Hehe, I think this is a good idea! heart I've never had a significant other on V-Day (or VD as I like to call it mrgreen ), but I'm never opposed to celebrating a holiday! =)
Probably all my pics would be from anime/manga/literature, because I am a huge nerd like that. My brain is a little numb right now, but I've been wanting to respond to your post for several days and just haven't gotten around to it. I think I really like your choice of Jane Eyre, though. I really like that book, though I remember the first time I read it, I got so mad at Jane I threw the book across the room a couple of times. xD

heart What a sweet idea! heart
Holly Golightly & Paul Varjak - Breakfast at Tiffany's (my all time favorit movie!)
Will Hunting & Skylar - Good Will Hunting (tumultous, but sweet)
Paul Bratter & Corie Bratter - Barefoot in the Park (played by the lovely Robert Redford and Jane Fonda)
Superman & Louis Lane - Superman series (Louis pisses me off sometimes, but still, sweet)
Lorrie & Jo - Little Women (ok, so they didn't get together...but I liked them coupled up)
Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy - Pride and Prejudice (I love the dynamic of this couple)
Louis & Claudia - Interview with a Vampire (again, not really a couple...but there was a deep love between the two of them)
Like Nessachan I wanted to put in some anime characters...but really, I can't think of any! The way that manga and anime work (shojo anyway), you never know if they'll end up with the person you want!
I do like Riiko & Night from Absolute Boyfriend Spike & Julia from Cowboy Bebop Tohru & Yuki from Fruits Basket Sumire & Momo from Tramps like us Tsuzuki & Hisoka from Descendants of Darkness (Oh, that's right, i said it!) Ritsuka & Soubi from Loveless (can't help myself) Hatsumi & Ryoki from Hot Gimmick (there can never be another pairing from that book, you hear me?!)
That's all I can think of for now (it's more than I thought I would!) whee

I actually got more mad at Rochester than Jane...
Jane was a servant and a woman in a time of very few rights for women... so I understood why she didn't assert herself more (she could have lost her position and had her reputation ruined as a governess).
Still the part where Blanche insults Jane, I really just wanted Rochester to walk over calmly, and beat the snot out of Blanche. I mean come on, his love got insulted by some ninny! Jane couldn't really defend herself because Blanche's status made it dangerous for Jane to flat out say "Yo Blanche... you bi-atch!"
I definitely like the Will and Skylar pairing because they are able to be silly with one another and such.
I admit I was really hoping Lorrie and Jo would have hooked up-- though Jo's hubby later in the story really pushed her to be all that she could be.
Lizzy and Darcy were just warming up their argument skills for marriage. Yet another literary example how you can love someone even when you absolutely can't stand them!
Anime Wise... I was actually hoping Spike would move on and fall for Faye. I can't help it, I'm a Faye fan. I always fancied Yohji and Asuka from Weiss Kreuz as tragic as their story was. Inu Yasha and Kagome need to stop fighting and go make babies already. And the big sap in me got all teary when Domone realized he needed Rain in G Gundam.

I love Scralet & Rhett in Gone with the Wind.
It makes me sad, though. They are so meant for each other, but by the time Scarlet realises this, Rhett pisses off. LOL I both hate & love love storys like that. I hate them becuase part of me wants everyone to meet their true love, get married and live happily ever after. And I love them coz they are different from typical stories, and more true to life.

I think alot of Jane's personality came with the fact that she knew who she was, so it didn't matter what other people said or thought about her. SHe was content with knowing that she wasn't pretty, rich, or had a good station in life. SHe stood up for herself when she was wronged, but she didn't feel the need to try and be something that she wasn't. I do like Professer Baer...and you're right, he did alot for Jo. but I can't help but love the passion and zeal that Lorrie had for Jo...even though they would have killed each other in the end!

Fry and Leela from Futurama – It’s to bad the series ended when Leela was starting to return Fry’s affection.
Jack and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas – It’s just a sweet pairing
Claire Simms and Clarence Bell from Boston Legal – This is a new coupling that quickly became my favourite. Their relationship is pretty much based on breaking down walls and accepting each other based on who they are, not what they’ve shown the world.

Beauty and the Beast - And all the derivatives thereof (Phantom of the Opera & Christine, Quasimodo & Esmeralda, Goliath & Eliza, Swamp Thing & Abigail, V & Evey). The Beauty and the Beast relationship has always been one of my favorite dynamics, even when the girl is too vapid to see beyond the monstrous aspect of the beast.
Sherlock Holmes and Watson - And all the derivatives, again (Basil of Bakerstreet & Dawson, House & Wilson). This has the appeal of the odd couple, along with a fascinating, brilliant and terribly flawed main character whom you can only really pair with one person, because he has no other relationships and actively repels everyone else. (House has less of this, of course, since people seem compelled to pair him with everyone in the show. Yay, House/Dwarf Mother!)
Bertie Wooster and Jeeves - I'm a new convert to Wodehouse, so Bertie and Jeeves is my favorite couple right now. Bertie's sweet nature and his uncanny ability to get in trouble (and engaged) in the course of helping his friends, combined with Jeeves's feudal spirit and brain capable of out-thinking every other character (and getting Bertie out of trouble) makes them the most adorable couple ever. Plus, the amount of innuendo and classical homosexual references in the books (i.e. the Junior Ganymede Club) makes one think that the only reason Wodehouse didn't have them in a fond embrace by the end of every story is because he started writing them in the 20's, when sodomy was still illegal in England.
Jareth and Sarah - This one is fueled mostly by the little hints the movie gives us of Jareth's love for Sarah... the story at the beginning (the Goblin King had fallen in love with the girl), the ballroom scene, and his final offer (Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave). Ah, one-sided love angst...
Hannibal Lecter and Clarice - I suppose this falls under the Beauty and the Beast dynamic... but it's such a scarily dysfunctional relationship, it's like a train wreck. I just can't look away.
The Tick and Arthur - Just... so cute! I really wish that The Tick had an active fandom, because I've only found one fanfiction that managed to do them justice. It makes me wish that I could write...
Count D and Leon - Another odd couple. I seem to really like those. The beautiful, mysterious Chinese petshop owner and the loud, obnoxious American cop who's always trying to arrest him for murder or drugs, but still drops into the petshop every day for tea and cake.
Yzma and Kronk - There's got to be some reason why such a sweet-natured young guy is so devoted to a bitter, murderous old woman who's not even nice to him... and I soooo want to know what it is. *sigh* If only I could write...

You know I never realized the Sherlock/Watson pairing in House and Wilson, in a weird way though, I think all of House's underlings represent various facets of Watson. Cameron is kind of the compassionate side, Foreman's the intellect, Wilson's the philosophy, etc. House and Midget Mother did have chemistry. I kind of wonder if they're going to hook House up with the doctor in a wheelchair, she did seem to hold her own against House. The dialog between those two was awesome as they played battle of the disabilities.
Oooh and Sarah and Jareth was a most excellent pairing. There is something exceedingly alluring about a sexy, magical man with a bit of a dark side who for reasons unknown goes for the seemingly ordinary (though maybe not so ordinary) girl. Sometimes I think if Jareth had just posed his love a little different for Sarah she might have accepted him, "fear me" isn't exactly what women want to hear. Oh Jareth-- if only you could have known the benefits of Italian restaurants, flowers, and sappy soft rock.
I'm definitely a Fry and Leela fan. There was all the tension of that seemingly destined love that just doesn't get started. Jack and Sally were also very sweet.
Oh, and t1ph4ni, I agree with you about Jane for the most part. However, I do believe Jane did regret her looks and status sorely when Rochester was wooing Blanch. Thus the infamous scene with her painting the different portraits, more or less tearing herself apart. I think that part of the book had me absolutely sympathetic to Jane. Also I think in the scene where she and Rochester confess their love, now maybe I'm confusing one of the adaptations with the book, but I believe she tells him that if she was beautiful and rich she'd make him want her as much as she wants him. I'll have to look it up, it's one of my favorite literary scenes of all time.

Heh, you know, I'd thought I was soooo smart for seeing the parallels between House and Sherlock Holmes... until I saw that House lived at 221B and realized that it wasn't all that subtle. xd
I really, REALLY hope that they don't hook House up with the wheelchair doctor... although that would be less objectionable than hooking him up with Cameron. Cam's become such an annoying character over the last two seasons. Although I'm a House/Wilson shipper, I'd much prefer that they don't pair House up with anyone, officially. And if they make the wheelchair doctor a recurring character, I hope she really is a lesbian. That would just make my day.
And I don't know, picturing Jareth in an Italian restaurant is kinda... scary. xd But he's got the sappy soft rock down!
Eliza and Goliath makes me happy, although it's kind of a sad relationship, canonically. I wish that the series had been given a natural ending, with a more hopeful outlook for those two.
