Mertseger is the goddess of the necropolis at Thebes (Waset). She's the guardian who looked down on the Valley of the Kings to make sure the dead's resting places were not desecrated. Should one decide to rob a tomb they might have suffered her wrath in the form of a snakebite, scorpion sting or blindness (oathbreakers were also "punished"). Some of her most devout followers were the workers of the tombs themselves. With her protection, all their hard work would be kept safe.. or at least avenged should someone ruin it. However she was also a forgiving goddess. Should someone who desecrated a tomb go back to her and beg forgiveness she would cure them of their afflictions. This of course was a bit of an odd concept to the Egyptians. In a world of ma'at there isn't much of the mindset of repenting, but for those who came to Mertseger and confessed their crimes along with their regret for doing so, they would be healed and protected.
Her name comes from mr "love" (with a feminine t ending) and sgr "quiet), or "She Who Loves Silence". A cobra was most often her dipiction, wether it be a full cobra, cobra with the head of a woman or visa versa. Which of course explains why snakebites were a common affliction lawbreakers recieved from her. She was believed to reside on top of a pyramid-shaped peak among a chain of mountains that overlooked the Valley of Kings which was sometimes, respectfully, called "The Peak of the West". This of course meant that only those who lived around the Valley knew of and worshiped her. When her followers left the area and burried their dead in other areas, she was left alone to be forgotten by the passage of time. Luckily not completely forgotten. Such a terrifying yet merciful goddess will hopefully be remembered for centuries to come.
