I've found that by listening to Japanese songs, I've been able to pick up a few words, Like ミライ (mirai (future (I think))). Does anyone else listen to Japanese music/bands? If so, What words have you picked up?

Absolutely. I've memorized lots of words through songs. One time, I was getting confused on which kanji to put in front of "guchi" to spell "exit". I remembered "deguchi ni tatte" from Hikari xd , which means "to stand in the exit".
I actually couldn't remember the translation correctly on the test, and I got the question wrong, but the rest was good. whee
I remember now. sweatdrop

I listen to Orange Range, but where I pick up words are mostly in my Japanese video games.
Owari da- It's Over
Saigo- End/Last
Gemu Ova da- Game Over sweatdrop
Kai- Release, Open
Koi- Come
Rendan- Combo
Chi- Thousand
Dori- Bird
Kage- Shadow
Itachi- Weasil
Uchiwa- Fan
Ikimasu- To go ("here I go!")
Shuju- Concentrate(or something of the like)

i'd like to interject that there a ton of ways to study Japanese. I too started studying Japanese through music. I took the lyric book and marked out in romaji how kanji was pronounced.
I do have to say too though that some words in japanese change their sounds when placed with other words. lemme show you some examples. The word kawa means river. However, if it is added to some words like the name of a town its shound will change: Kozagawa. That is a real town in Wakayama. Japanese is a soft sound lanuage. Anytime something may come across as hard the sounds change. The trick to this though is memorizing which sounds change and which dont. For that studying is needed.
I dont know if any of you are in Japan right now but if you have a keitai (a cellphone) that little thing right there is sooo helpful in figuring out Kanji especially for simple words like ima (now), konnichi wa (hello, good day) and etc. 3nodding
Flash cards are awesome in studying too. I made my first ones to study hiragana and katakana. If you can, look for Japanese quizzes online. They are immensely helpful. Also, focus on what aspect of the language you want to soar in. I find speaking to be the easiest and then writing. The kanji itself will take an eternity (to memorize the stroke order & the chinese and japanese sounds & multitudes of them) but there are people who have accomplished this goal. I will stay on the conversation side of things and learn the Kanji I need for the JLPT. =)

I'd agree with the methods here. I myself like to write out little Doramas using the language(roughly translated, of course). For example...
"Aishinai?" (you don't love me?)
"So dane." (Yeah, thats right."
"Nande?" (But why?)
"Datte...kare to issho ni miteru yo" (Because...I saw you with him.)
"Dare?" (who?)
"Ichiban tomodachi deyo. Rabu Hoteru de ikeru de..."(my best friend, going into a love hotel...)
"Hiro. Atashi wa-" (Hiro, I-)
"Mitanai yo! Kono kuso Yariman!" (don't look at me, you f**king whore!)
You can guess where this goes from here O.O

I listen to Japanese music.
"Ichigatsu no aoi suki"
Ichi means one, and I think gatsu means month. Doesn't suki mean like? So it would be something like.... Once every month ... .... like. o.o; I'm confusing myself.

I just practice writing things over and over. I have filled several notebook pages with konnichiwa, ohayou, domo, and my name in hiragana, katakana, and romanji

I've got my name worked out, I think its パウンド マイケル (Paundo Maikeru) (Paundo- Pound = My Family name) (Maikeru - Michael = My first name). Have I got the order right there? I'm still trying to get the translations and roomaji for the songs I listen to.

I tend to listen to visual kei groups far too often, I could upload some songs and post the lyrics to them and hopefully find a translation or even try and make one myself but my translations suck xd
