Hi,

So I'm at this anime convention this weekend, and lots of nerds go to anime conventions, which is as it should be.

So I'm standing around yesterday with some of my friends and suddenly, this mob of teenagers, mostly girls and a few gothy boys come hording into our little corner of seclusion.

One girl starts screaming, "GAIAAAAAAAAAA! GAIA PEOPLE OVER HERRREEEEE GAIIIAAAAAA!! GAIIIIIAAAA!"

This went on and on and on and people were obviously starting to get annoyed, but still the mob of teenagers grew.

Then everyone started screaming, "GAIAAA! GAIAAA!" over and over, sending everyone else in the area scattering.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love an anime convention, but behavior like this is one of the things that turned me off of Gaia for two years xD I don't want to associate with such obnoxiousness. If you have a meet up, fine, but don't be shouting right in my ear!

*grumbles like a curmudgeon*

Though, this was much more sedate Gaian trouble causing than what I've seen at other cons. I've seen a dozen security guards have to break up a mob of rabid Gaians before, so I guess a little shouting may be a blessing.

*shudders* I never been to any con yet (I sy "yet" as I said I'd buy lunch for a friend at one, but that'll mean flying a plane and walking around crowds (*doesn't do good on either of those*)).... I hope AC this year doesn't get anything like that..... I'm not a fan of people close/touching or loud noises... I don't see why those people didn't use a damn sign (make it leet-ish so they know it really is for them). If I were to witness something like that on any account, I would leave a message board or community. I might have to be like "what? Me? No, *I* wanted to go to Kennywood, but this was closer" =P. Just because I wouldn't leve something online doesn't mean I wouldn't abandon it for that day. I can fit most any stereotype. Last thing I need is to somehow wind up with being labeled with a crazy like that.

I've got my own collection of grievances with Gaians and Gaia when it comes to conventions. For some reason, despite the fact that they're being told NOT to by staff and BCC security, they gather en masse where ever Lanzer and Jakobo or whoever is there decides to do the item toss. This invariably leads to something like crowd panic when the items are actually thrown, and people have been injured.

And, of course, those doing the item toss just laugh as they're watching the kids damn near crush each other trying to get a ******** shirt.

Last year they were told not to do it in one of the lobbies, from the second to third floor. As they had done the year before. (Without permission, because hey--they're internet gods, right?) So, ever eager to make us hate them, they moved OUTSIDE. So much better, and yet--not.

And these kids don't help. They're going spastic over a shirt, like they didn't save up for months to spend money like water, and they can't afford to buy it instead of risk being injured for it. I know I prefer to beg like a hungry dog at someone's feet instead of just buying it from them like a human being with some dignity.

They also spent about three months in the convention guild here on Gaia talking about making nifty little badges to signify that they're Gaians. Cool. Except whenever I tried to talk to one of them they acted like confused, frightened deer. Sorry, I forgot they can only be real people online. Life is scary beyond the computer!

I've never encountered any screaming Gaians, but then again I won't tolerate that sort of thing, and I will tell them to stop. They have to listen to me.

. . . and this is why I've been reluctant to mention my activities on Gaia to anyone IRL. It's not that I'm embarrassed to be on Gaia, it's just that I'm embarrassed by others on Gaia.

It's kinda like when there's a band, TV show, movie, or book that I like and there's a rabid, silly fanbase I have to be identified with.

Well, I find that anime conventions have annoying people whether or not they're Gaians. It's one of the reasons I only go to small conventions nowadays... They're slightly more sedate.

The only time I ever had any trouble with Gaians at a convention was at Yaoi Con, maybe three, four years ago. But that was more because Yaoi Con has a high quotiant of annoying con-goers, since yaoi fangirls can really start to grate on your nerves. There was a little Gaian get-together, but I left after a few minutes because everyone was acting like they were such little deviants. rolleyes They actually thought that Yaoi Con was going to have to raise the age limit to 21 because of the room parties. Now, anyone with a brain could tell them that the con organizers are not legally responsible for anything that goes on someone's room.

Besides, room parties at Yaoi Con are really tame. They're just a bunch of girls getting together, drinking and talking about man-sex. If you're lucky, you'll get invited to a semi-nude artist sketch session. I've seen WAY more man-on-man action at Anthrocon and I don't even go to the really adult room parties.

Oh, I witnessed that whole thing and took some pictures. It was truely frightening. I was scared, I thought somebody was gonna get trampled. It was a very unsafe situation.

Oh no, Yaoi Fangirls. I have nothing against Yaoi, and I'll admit to having a few yaoi doujinshi (though nothing too graphic) in my collection, but URGH.. Yaoi Fangirls.. I have never seen such loud, spastic, behavior in my life. It was far more interesting before the fandom was 90% drooling horny 15 year olds dragging each other around on leashes and screaming Yaoi-sex things in mixed company where children are around. confused

Oh well... they'll grow out of it someday, we hope xD

Wow...thank goodness the only con I have ever been to was CII (don't ask me what year that was in because for the life of me I can't remember right now), but that was before Gaia was around I do believe. That and I just can't see Gaians roaming around a Star Wars con rofl Though I wouldnt' be surprised either way actually now a days...

There are a few cons I want to go to this year, but seeing as that I am using all my vacation time at the end of this month I doubt I will be able to make it to Anime Central (which is the main one I want to to go) but I should be able to make it to Ar. Con and the small con held at Wash U.

Well, if I am any indication, they do. I used to be... oh, so obnoxious. Words cannot describe. But I've apparently grown up a little. Though hope that the rest of them will doesn't make it any easier to bear them *now*.

Although I like yaoi, it's more my sister's fandom. I go to Yaoi Con to support her, to hang out with friends, and to cosplay. And it's a great little con. But the fangirls really give it a bad reputation. There are some events that I NEVER go to, namely the Bishonen Auction, because having to listen to five hundred girls screaming for two hours would lead me to homicide.

But I think, as with pretty much everything else, after you've been into something for a while you become more sedate and more apt to seek out other fans you can talk with rationally, rather than screaming and spazzing and "Oh, [insert anime guy here] is so HOT!"

I've been going to the cons around my area since 2000 and never noticed any crazed Gaians. I have, however, noticed many rabid anime/manga fangirls and fanboys. I think you're going to have them whether gaia's in the equation or not. As far as yaoi fangirls go I like to use my friend's level scale. Level 1- screaming rabid idiot; level 5- you'd never know they were a fangirl unless they told you or saw their yaoi collection. The friend who made up this scale is not a fangirl, but she has been to several cons with me.

ahhh you forgot, according to her scale by level three you begin converting others to the cause, and by level 5 you are such a master at it that your mere presence is able to convert those around you. ..

wink come on wink we got menath to automatically start thinking in terms of yaoi pairings for fruits baskets and that whole week he was coming up with other ones . . .

Oh yes, I know the feeling. I don't mention about Gaia irl either, except around my boyfriend and his nerdy friends. I even retrain from talking about me like Harry Potter books around others unless I find out they like the book too. ._.;;;

If I mention it, I get a negative reaction, especially being given spoilers so they can upset the crazy and easy-to-hate HP fan.

I went to a small local anime convention last weekend and luckily, I didn't see any crazed Gaia people. I seen some girls having the mini wings in their hair or have the plushies, but that was it. But, I have noticed the loud and obnoxious behavior in conventions, like yelling and jumping around and being all touchy-feely. I really dislike the people who just like to yell out random nonsense to try to be funny. I usually don't go to big social events, but I like going to cons because I like dressing up and seeing others cosplay.
