Okay, I'm a co-captain of a coachless colorguard, and me and the other co-captain have given all of our guard members a written copy of our rules and they seem to think we're being unfair. I think that our rules are not nearly as strict as they even should be. I'd like to know, what are other guards rules are so i can compare and improve mine.

Let me point something out. Our colorguard isnt technically PART of the band. We have many non-band members in our colorguard, and if we made it strictly for band members, we would have 2 members. 2 members doesnt make a colorguard.
We only practice after school, therefore not with the band. So, we cant 'do what the band does'.

See, now thats like the rules we have for our guard. And we have technically three practices a week, but only two of them are required...and people miss practice like crazy. We even told them that one practice out of the week isnt required because some people have issues with doing one of the days. but they're straightening up more lately.

I see nothing wrong with your guard rules. And like stated before, guard is a part of BAND. You can twist it all you like, you're still part of the band. Without the band there would be no field show. And for my old school no winterguard for that matter. Because the BAND director took care of the business for transport and money for winterguard. If your members think your rules unfair then they are going to get a rude awakening to the real world. PDA in the work place (even in a stupid grocery store job) could get you fired. Tell them to suck it up, obey the rules, or leave.

Ha. See, our guard has a coach, but she lets me and the next oldest member run the team most the time, since that's one of our rules. Others include:
1. Captains are determined by seniority (grade as in 9th, 10th and so on) and/or experience (who has been there the longest) 2. Captain's rules are NOT to be questioned 3. She who writes the routine is the only one with the power to change it 4. Miss 3 practices=banned for one game, miss 5=you're off the team till nest year 5. Be-eth most excellent to one another, unless you WANT to get whacked repeatedly until blood comes out your ears. (We've watched a bit too much Bill and Ted) 6. Be on time to games and practice or we'll drive away without you
And the most important:
7. Have fun with it! Smile! But don't look like you're on drugs.

Our Guard really doesn't have rules. We're just suposed to respect and listen to those that have been in Guard longer and to listen to our instructors. We don't swear much around our instructors but that's the only real things that we need to follow. Oh, and we have to call if we're not going to be able to make it to a practice and we have to be at practice 15 minutes before practice starts. That's all. (Guard is so a part of Band)

hmmmmm..... lets see 1. take care of your eguipment 2. respect the captin(s) 3. be on time to everything 4. always do your dot books* 5. shut up and listen to who ever is talking 6. don't grip about a punishment* 7. be a family of brothers and sisters 8. have fun
that basicly sums it up for the my cg. *dot books help one to remeber drill and they work. they are also for notes that one may have. *people used to not follow the rules so we made punishments for them and now ppl are griping about running or pushing after rehersal(you do the crime you do the time)

Uh never had a captain in high school but the rules were generic for then and the independent groups i've done
1. Never miss practice unless very ill
2. No Sweets or junk food
3. Boyfriends come after guard
4. no denim
5. give an attitude and might as well dig your grave
6. you must have your dot book fully filled for dot checks
i can't think of them all but that's a bit of them

Never Ask : "what time is it?" the answer you will get is : "its guard time!"
no denim
have some sort of clothing or the drumline gets pissy
we are a family, we protect each other
have fun
every rule we have is an unspoken agreement because we respect everyone on our team we do not have punishments for we call it celebration. the guard and the band are one entity, no differance.
the only rules we ever hear about are the rules of technique
"you better give it"
