Yeah, I hate solo and ensemble, good thing I go to oboe to have an excuse to not have time to play a mandatory ensemble to be in the percussion section.
Do any other bands demand solo and ensemble to be on drumline the following year?

My school doesn't, but my drum Instructor "STRONGLY INSISTS" that we all participate in at least one ensemble or a solo... I think i'm either going to do 2 ensembles, or an ensemble and a solo... or maybe i'll get a little crazy and do two ensembles and a solo... xp

We have band up to Band 6.
SO if your in band 5 you have to do an ensemble. Its like our final exam. And if your in band 6 you have to do a solo.

our band has a mandatory small group (up to quintet) for a grade and you can either go to solo and ensemble or preform in front of the class. the choirs (flute choir, clarinet choir, and such) are highly reccomended.

It's not mandatory for our school, but our band director gives us extra credit for doing it =D
I'm doing a solo again this year, but it's for my main instrument, not percussion xD

Solo and Ensemble is required if you're going for the band letter (which most people are) but otherwise, it's not mandatory. Of course, our Band Director recommends it, but it isn't a required event.

I have a reason to do solo & ensemble, simply because I'd like to letter, and my piece is quite easy, it's on snare.

I happen to kind of like solo and ensemble but being a bells player some of the four mallet peices I do get to be really nifty and sound awesome. I suggest you listen to a marimba solo called Rain Dance.
