So the Northwest Marching Band Championships, hosted at Hillsboro staduim, had 29 bands from Oregon, Washington and part of Idaho compete last night. The two top bands tied with scores of 93.7, the next highest being an 89.6. The two top bands both won captions; one band won high visual and high music, while the other one won high auxillary, high percussion, and high general effect (by .1 of a point).
To break the tie, they went to the general effect score, which placed the band who won auxillary, percussion and g.e. as the first place winner.
Discuss please:
-Does this seem reasonable to you? -How do you think ties like this should be broken? -Did you go to the NWMBC? -Should a single caption have an effect on whether a band wins an entire competition?

Our band was just happy to make finals (You should have seen and heard how loud be cheered!) ! And get the soloist award (she worked so hard at that!)
But, apparently, in the bylaws of NWMBC, during a tie, they are supposed to use the Music Effect score. (So says our band director) That gives all the bands a more fair chance. And that would mean that we would have a new Champion in the circuit.
So, in answer to your questions:
-Not really -It should been broken by the bylaws already set in place! -Yeps! -Well, all the captions are weighted (General Effect is 40% of your score, and so is Marching, I believe. Everything else is about 5% or so)

I wish I could have heard it!

Our director just told that us today as we were listening to judges tapes.
It's quite unfortunate that E...erthey...won again. But, next season is another chance. Apparently they are opening a new high school in their district that will take students (and marchers) away from that school!

Thats actually quite unfortunate for them...large numbers of marchers has always been their thing, and when their numbers are decreased, will they look and sound as good as they apparently have been for the past few years?

i dont know how else they could dicide who wins, so i guess it would be reasonable. then again, our band went to the preview night in hillsboro and won by a tenth of a point, and this was probably because we won high general effect. i dont think any of us thought we would win because we were a new band at that competition and nobody knew who we were so it was a huge surprise. i still cant get over it that we won. our director was saying that we will be going against some good oregon bands. and we knew they were good because we went to the NWMBC in corvallis the year before.

Oh yeah! I remember you guys...our band didn't go to the competition, but I heard it was pretty good. We went to the NWMBC last year too....but we didn't do as well last year as we did this year.

My school was part of a tie in the Atlantic Coast Championships last year. There wasn't a breaker, because neither of us got the GE Caption. We got Best Visual, and I think they got Best Perc and Brass.
It makes sense to me. I always considered General Effect to be the caption that mattered most, because it involved the whole band, not just one section. And how else are they gonna break ties? A cadence showdown like in the movie "Drumline?"

The only problem that I have with breaking a tie with the GE caption, is that it's almost always the band with the bigger group. The ones who can get 60 guard members on the field, and can afford to hook up their pit with mics and a sound board.

Yeah I know EXACTLY what you mean...*cough* evergre....*cough* anywho, I guess i'm just bitter about losing the title by .1 of a point of G.E. wink

Yeah, I was there at that competition. I do think in a way that it is fair, but it really does suck, considering who *cough cough* won. Everyone was so rooting for you guys, all the other bands wanted you to win so badly. Just to prove that the band who did and up winning wasn't invincible because of their size (were a super-small band, it's really important to us). Personally I think said band did worse during finals, their sound was much, much worse and weaker overall, I thought they did worse the second time. *shrugs* we all were convinced that *cough* Norfleet paid the judges. He probably did. xd
