I don't suppose anyone here is familiar with kansai-ben. I think it's
pretty cool (even if the sophisticated Tokyoites don't agree). I've
been trying to use "ya" in place of "da", and "yaro" in place of "daro"
in my sentences when I don't need to be formal or sincerely polite.

For those who have no clue what I'm talking about.

I've had a bit of exposure to it, having spent some time in Wakayama-shi (though I believe Wakayama-ben differs slightly from Kansai-ben). It wasn't hugely different from what I learned in the classroom, but there were enough things to throw me off (most notably "shindoi," which I see wikipedia includes- that had me confused for the longest time!).

I heard a great story about a guy who learned Japanese on the docks of
Osaka. So the only Japanese he knew was Osaka street slang. People found
it so hilarious that the only Japanese a Gaikokujin knew was slang that he
ended up becoming a mini-celebrity, most noteably in fridge commercials.

So if I wanted to say とてもおもしろい in kansai-ben, would I use めっちゃおもしろい ? My sensei is from the Kansai area.

You could even drop the い at the end of おもしろい and replace it with う, so that it becomes おもしろう. [めっちゃおもしろう]

It's so much fun! whee

Gah, that's a hurdal of the Japanese language I have yet to understand. When I lived in Nagoya, my host family would use a varient of Kansai-ben (Nagoya-ben) when they wanted to talk about things w/out me understanding...crafty people they are... xd

I love Wakayama-shi. Big Whale is where I'd always stay when there or at a friend's house. And you are right. Wakayama-ben does differ from Kansai-ben. I love them both! heart
