I have only seen this phenomina once in my life. When I was ten living in Alabama. We had a massive storm gathering and a ball of light floated right outside our house. I zipped into the house melting the glass and put a gaping hole right through our television. It hit one of our cats but the cat was unharmed. This ball ligning also ran off with our silverware (It was dinnertime).
*Please discuss* ~This phenomina and any experiences with it ~How this could happen (from a physics standpoint) ~Possibilites for harnessing or creating such a phenomina

Last I heard they had succesfully created ball lightning in the lab (having dificulty finding a link sweatdrop ). They found that it is a ball of water in the plasma state (they created it by hitting a water surface with energy comparable to that of a lightning strike).

Normally a person would be freaked out... But I was too shocked to be scared or curious. I was kinda just sitting there with my jaw hung wide open as this thing blitzed through our house.
To let you guys know. In Alabama there are frequent lightning storms and small twisters, I also lived on a lake.
so If what "Beyond_oblivion" said was true then that may explain the penomena. But I'm still a little skeptical.

My mom told me that something like that happened to her. She used to live in Wisconsin, so similar conditions: hurricanes, lightning storms, very humid air. I agree with you, what Beyond_Oblivion said was kewl. I hope someone finds a link to that...

My friend Andrew has started up a discussion for this in our school message board. (The part about Ball Lightning not my experience)
I'll post whatever comes from there here. (you can't lnk directly to it, pass protected so only students may use it)

Cynthia_Rosenweiss It RAN OFF WITH YOUR SILVERWARE? eek How the hell could it do that? How fast did the bugger move? eek eek The ball lightning produces a fairly strong electro magnetic field picking up small objects that are magnetically attracted to it. (we almost lost our toaster too)

For the while it was so freaky...

I've seen a documentary on such a phenomenon. There is suposedly one in every storm, but I have never heard of one being that close to the ground..

The same thing happened to a friend of mine in Florida when I used to live there; me personally I thought he was joking when he told me and I messed around with him saying it was a ghost orb. Now I need to go eat humble pie and apologize ^^;
One thing I'm skeptical about: but why wasn't your cat harmed when it hit it? If it put a hole in your window and tv, how was it not able to hurt the cat?

Perhaps it became grounded. If it stems from Lightning then there is that chance that, with lightning, the energy will pass through your body harmlessly. Or maybe plasma doesn't affect organic matter? (just a random hypothosis)

My Grandpa swears he has seen ball lightening
This is very similar to an experience i had, im not sure if it was ball lightening
I live in a very wet area, and it was a storm, keep in mind, i live in an area flooded with wetlands and other fascimiles(sp?), the only thing wetter is coastal and Hawaii!
Stormy night, i walked outside my room, tiled outside, door directly to the left, laundry room (along with heaters, including gas, funny because if you light a match there it stands a few inches high compared to one inch in other rooms), halfway between where i am and where the laundry room is there is the bathroom. As I walk on the tile i see this tiny tiny tiny ball of lightening zip past me, and there was giant bolts connecting each door knob and other metal objects. I WAS SHOCKED!, both literally and figuratively. It zipped by and flashed, and it was gone. My hair stood up and had these wierd muscle twitches and 'funny bone' feelings.
i love lightening

(ON TOPIC)MY THEORY BELOW Balls of lightning may be created in certain weather conditions, there may have to be a great deal of moisture in the air,not everyday moisture, the H20 molecules then form up into a TIGHT "ball" and then lightning hits it,turning the molecules into the plasma state, they then float down and steal peoples silverware(Im sorry but I put funny things in randomly)Why do they float down?Well for one, they're not light water anymore, they are in the plasma state. How it can melt through things:It got hit by lighting and turned into plasma. My guess is that the plasma was like acid,it attached to the wall and ate through it... Rogue
