It was as if the ground beneath his hooves gave a silent sigh of relief as winter loosened its grip, not with the desperation of surrender, but with a gentle last caress that comes with the promise of seeing an old friend again one day. The frost melted into crystal-clear streams that carried the laughter, secrets, and memories of a season old, providing the first push for new life to break through the softening earth. Branches, once bare except for the stubborn evergreens, stretch their branches high as the birds return, filling the crisp air with melodies and tales of far-off lands.

The world returns to life as the sun stretches over the land, bringing blankets of vibrant buds and blooms meant to represent honey-sweet promises of new life and new beginnings. However, that is all they were. They were nothing more than a river of lies flowing freely from the mouth of a corpse covered in pleasantries and flowers. Still, is a song of lies not just as sweet as anything else after such a harsh winter? So long as the fresh earth awakened and gave rise to the sweet, delicate fragrance of renewal, it was all the same to Tanakh.

Spring appeared to arrive as nothing more than a passing moment, almost unnoticed as the summer sun climbed higher and higher, as if a gluttonous king that could not be satisfied with all they owned. Crisp air gave way to scents of petrichor, rich life that lingered with the overbearing weight of humidity. The birds still sang occasionally, but now with a chorus of cicadas and crickets that only sang at the peak of the afternoon heat.

Fields of wildflowers filled Tanakh’s vision as he slowly made his way up the unofficial path through a secret garden a friend had told him about. Usually, the stallion would have traveled under the cover of night, but with anxiety and hope pulsing through his veins, he could not help but push himself past his comfort zone to reach his current goal. Social anxiety and negativity towards his own appearance be damned, he NEEDED to find a way to express to Cora how she had positively affected his life. As someone who had spent most of their life traveling between ocean and swamp, and someone who looked kind of...monstrous, Tanakh didn’t have a lot of positive experiences growing up. So, as he came into adulthood, he remained in the swamp and wandered while helping the occasional lost soul find their way back out.

It’s a lonely life, but he found comfort in the loneliness, that is, until Cora came along. He would not admit it out loud, but whenever she’s around it is as if his world became more vibrant. He found himself smiling a little more and looking forward to his days, if only for the smallest reasons. Even if this feeling was one-sided, he still felt the need to try to express his feelings in a way that was acceptable. She seemed to like flowers. Flowers were acceptable, yes? He knew nothing of them, but he was told Euthalia was an expert of the medicinal and gifting kind.

Seas of tulips, daffodils, blossoms, roses, lavender, sunflowers, and other varieties he could not identify surrounded him as he traveled deeper into the mare’s territory. Up ahead he spotted the delicate mare watching him. Her smile was gentle, but there was a hint of mischievousness in her eyes, as if she could read him like an open scroll. Maybe she could.

Smirking to herself, Euthalia, turned her gaze towards the expanse of her secret territory.

“When Tieguanyin told me she would send a friend my way I didn’t expect it would be for this reason,” She really did her best to keep her land a secret, her purpose and home only known to a handful of trusted friends, so having someone new sent her way would always come down to interest or annoyance. “But who am I to judge?”

Turning her gaze back to the stallion, the mare stifled a laugh at the scene before her. For such a large stallion, he looked uneasy and out of place within her home. It was heartwarming, really. “Tell me, Tanakh, which path do you choose? You say you want a gift to express your appreciation for what this new friend, or should I say...crush...has done, but is that really what you want?”

Euthalia made her way towards the blooming rose bushes that bordered the field of wildflowers. They were stubborn things, but in their stubbornness beauty and quiet danger thrived. It really was like love. There was beauty in the feeling and expression of it, but souls would always find danger in opening themselves up to others or falling too deep within their feelings.

“I can make you a bouquet of friendship with little problem. A couple of yellow roses for friendship and joy, a few sunflowers for loyalty and longevity, and maybe a chrysanthemum or two for honesty, and you’ll be done. But again, is that really what you want? You may only get one chance after all, so why not take a leap of faith?”

“I, I just,” Fear. It was always fear that held him back. A constant, comfortable companion. It was easier to fear and accept things as they were. It would be so much easier to accept this feeling as friendship and loyalty, to keep her around as a constant and safe friend. But then, could he live with such dishonesty to himself and her? Someone had once said yellow was a color of joy. Would he really be joyful?

His dark eyes then caught the flashes of red from the roses and wild tulips. He could not deny it. He could not deny the inner peace she brought him whenever she was around. Her smile. Her laugh. How she encouraged him to broaden his horizons and lift himself up. He loved her.
