It was a beautiful day, sun in the sky with a soft breeze blowing over the grass. Laying at the edge of a calm stream, Ayanna glances down at her reflection in the clear water and lets out a sigh. She tilts her head, this way and that, moving it in different angles as if it would change the image she saw before her eyes. No matter how much she tried, the reflection stayed the same, which only elicits another despondent sigh. Still gazing into the water, her eyes keep darting up to the white daisy that was delicately perched behind her ear. After a moment, her brows furrow as her sadness quickly changes into anger. Soon enough, the mare is roughly shaking her head side to side causing the flower to dislodge from it’s spot behind her ear. As it wafts down, she watches it when it lands in the water- the reflection distorting from the ripples on the surface. A look of regret quickly spreads across Ayanna’s face, watching the flower get pulled away and it was already floating down stream by the current by the time she realized it. Once it was out of sight, she was forlorn once again as she looks back down to her reflection and sighing. With a frown on her face, her gaze drops back to the water- looking through the reflection, not really focusing on anything in front of her. Silently, the mare starts to think back on her life and decisions that lead to everything that has happened to her at this point. The longer she thinks, the more forlorn she got with short moments of anger mixed in as well- as if she was mentally kicking herself.

Rafflesia didn’t care much about others, but he cared about his mate, and he especially cared about his mother. Given his heritage, most sane horses wouldn’t risk keeping a foal like him. But despite his traits, she stayed. Despite his occasional temper, she stayed. And despite his moments of violence, she stayed. Where most would have left the foal to nature, or despise it, his mother adored him and his siblings- always kept them close. When his siblings and him had grown though, that’s when he noticed that their mother’s demeanor towards them shift. That warm and adoring mare, soon became reserved and distant. It wasn’t as if she was afraid of them, but almost as if she was doubtful of something unknown to them. Because of this, his siblings left on their own, but he decided to stay.

Today, Rafflesia had spotted his mother wandering away from their home. Usually, he doesn’t pay it any mind as she does return, eventually. This time though, he decided to follow after her at some distance just to see what she was up to. Reaching the stream where she was, he kept his distance for the time being and simply watched her while she lied there. At first, everything seemed fine. She was just looking into the water. It was what she did next, that had him tilting his head in confusion. He was still silent, watching the flower he grew up to recognize drift down and get carried away by the current- surprised that she didn’t make any attempt to retrieve it, as it was slow enough. That was when he decided to walk over to where his mother was laying, coming up and standing beside her- glancing down into the water like she was.

“Is everything alright? You let your daisy float away.”

Lost in her own thoughts, Ayanna was oblivious of the fact that she wasn’t alone. So when a voice suddenly spoke out to her, she couldn’t help but jump with a whinny of surprise- clambering clumsily onto her hooves, ready to bolt. She looks around in shock, to see her son and let out a breath of relief.

“Oh, you scared me.” She said with a light pout, slowly calming herself down. Letting out a sigh, after catching her breath, she looks up to Rafflesia. She’s quiet for awhile, uncertain on if she wanted to tell him of her problems. At the same time, despite the moments where he was more violent or vicious, he’s always been there as a shoulder to cry on when she was willing to be around him. After a few moments of silence, she lets out a small snort and bows her head sadly.

“… I didn’t mean for it to fall off. But when it floated away, all I could think about was how it was just a lie and I didn’t deserve to wear it.”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to. This time, at least.” Rafflesia replied with a soft chuckle, meant to tease and lighten the mood. Even then, he could tell that there was something on her mind that was concerning her. He could see it on her face while she was silent. He didn’t rush her though, allowing all the time she needed to answer. When she did, a brow of his lifts in question which is followed by a curious tilt of his head. He looks down the stream in the direction the flower had floated in, then back to Ayanna trying to understand what she meant by it lying to her.

He let out a soft hum. “How was it a lie, and why don't you deserve it?”

Once again, Ayanna goes quiet. Her gaze drops to the water, looking over both of their reflections this time. She ran over thoughts and memories in her head, trying to prepare herself and what she had to say.

“The daisy lies because it has lost its meaning. Actually, more like I don’t align with its meaning anymore.” A frown pulled at her lips, her ears drooping on top of her head and her tail sagging behind her.

“When I was a foal, my mother gave me that daisy. She told me the significance behind the flower and is color. She said that daisies mean innocence, and that the color white represents innocence and purity. I was also told that I should grow to uphold those traits and values.” Her voice trailed off a little at the end, looking like she was silently beating herself up. “But when I grew…” A snort escapes her, looking away as she paused and went silent. Once again, she started debating on whether she would tell him of her, what she deems terrible, past. Quite a few minutes pass before her attention returns up to her son, shaking her head softly. “Let’s just say that I made wrong choices, that made me impure and not innocent anymore.”

Rafflesia remained silent, politely and intently listening to his mother as she explained what she was told the flower meant. When she seemed to stop there, he frowned in a bit of disappointment, but still chose not to say anything. He stayed this way for a moment, looking her over quietly as he contemplated what was said and his mother.

“You don’t truly believe that you’re impure and not innocent, do you?” He asks, giving her a tilt of his head. Before she could even answer, he stepped closer, continuing. “Even still. If that was true, you should know that those aren’t the other meanings.” He gently noses her muzzle, guiding her to hold her head up. “You’re the one who told me that daisies, and the color white, both also mean ‘new beginnings.’”

Much like she did earlier, he gave his head a mighty shake and knocked free the flower perched behind his own ear. His teeth clack when his first attempt to catch it misses, but fortunately, manages to snag it at the second. With a secured hold on the daisy, he begins to place the flower behind his mother’s ear- effectively replacing the one she had just lost. He wasn’t worried about losing his own daisy. Not only did he have another adorned on his leg, but if push come to shove, he could just find another and have his mate place it behind his ear.

“You don’t have to tell me what happened if you’re not ready, but don’t view it as an end. It’s just the end of one chapter and the start of something new. We had a new start, so it’s time for one for you. It might not be today, or even tomorrow, but you will get one in time. You’re a strong mare, always have been. I know you will get passed this, and you will be even greater for it.” He comforted, nickering gently while he nuzzles her cheek with his own.

Lifted her head like prompted, Ayanna gazes up to Rafflesia. Despite how she was feeling about herself, just seeing the wonderful stallion he grew up to be warmed her heart and comforted her some. She listened to what he had to say, even staying quiet at the question he asked. Her eyes go wide at words she was sure he would have forgotten when he was a foal. She’s even more surprised the moment he removed his daisy and put it behind her ear instead. When he finished, it took a lot for her not to cry- but a tear did run down her cheek.

“How did I raise such a wonderful son? Thank you Rafflesia, I really needed to hear that. Maybe this is the start of my brand new beginning. I do not know why, but if you really want to hear my story, I will tell you some day. Right now though, how about we go home?” She nuzzles him back, tail swishing softly behind him. After receiving a nod of confirmation, she moves beside him and they both walked back home.
