In the present day...
"I was a little girl, all alone in a large swamp. My parents left there, she half-chuckled at the ridiculous story. At the time, they told me that I was a big girl and that I could take care of myself. I believed them.
I didn't know much about the location or much about anything. The swamps are a place where the locals are sinister and not everything is as it seems. Initially, I was happy because she could run, play and swim freely, but that feeling was quick to pass, and I got hungry. For the first time, I had to look for myself without anyone to help me. I was wading through the water to look and listen for anyone who might be able to help."

In the past...
THREE was wading through the water gently, trying to avoid the plants that would otherwise tangle around her. She encountered a dead body leaning up against some plants. It's not someone she knew, but it still scared her all the same. She screamed and ran away in the direction she came. The shrill comotion startled a large fish. The fish swam past her and knocked her out of the way. The situation scared her further when a flash of light appeared under the water, and she was briefly shocked by it.
THREE scrambled onto a muddy bank and began to wail and cry for help; she didn't expect to see someone in their eternal slumber. The fish floated to the top of the water and remained there as still as the log she had rested next to.
She looked at the fish longingly, but she was suddenly no longer hungry after what she had witnessed. The gaunt, twisted and disfigured image of the stranger was baked into her mind's eye, never to go unseen for as long as she's breathing. She couldn't tell who it was or what it would have looked like alive. The body just became another nightmare to haunt her. She would not go back in that direction lest she encounter it again or meet the same fate. In such a situation, she would have run to her mother, but she's a big girl now.
So what happened?

Achlys had been resting, her eyes half closed, close to the remains of her prey, her own stomach as bloated as the corpse, she had fed well, the meal was large and would last her a long time so she had stayed near, in feral form to conserve energy, it was more efficient for her to remain in the cold blooded reptile form, than her larger one.
She blinked slowly as she she heard a splashing from the shallow water and ever so slowly rose, her body still mostly hidden from view aside from the top of her head. Not far off she saw a small figure, heard it crying for help and grinned inside her head, Dessert she thought and slowly, following the gentle flow of a current, to carry her closer to the foal, only her tail, beneath the water moved and even that was imperceptable, she'd had more than enough practice pretending to be a painted log after all.
