                                        Prologue

The woman paced back and forth across her cell like a cat in a cage. Her bare feet whispered against the stone tiles, the edges of her pants brushing the dirt away as she moved. She was trapped. The air was stale. Tugging on the lank silver locks that hung around her, she groans.

It had been a long while since she had been trapped like this.

The man who entered the room caught her attention, though her movements did not stop. He paused at the gate between them. “Well. Are you ready to talk?” His voice was soft, a dark baritone that carried easily in the space. She looked him over. Brown hair, cut short. Probably military. Grey uniform. Ill-fitting. Perhaps his original uniform was damaged and he was waiting for a replacement. Was he one of them that had stopped her when she arrived? The woman couldn't remember.

She laughs shortly, pausing in her pacing to turn and face him. “Talk? Is that all you wish? This thing, we could have done in a tavern, boy.” She mocks him. The woman wanted to see his face change. To frustrate a person gave her power, after all.

He shakes his head, pulling an apple from his bag, taking a bite before speaking. “No, Rain. We both know you would have found a way to wiggle out of that too.”

She tilts her head, stepping to the bars and resting her hands on them. “You have so little faith, boy. I am near insulted.” Her long fingers drum on the bars, rotating from pinky to pointer fingers over and over again. The drumming echoed in her body, seeming to resonate loudest in her ribcage.

The man smirks. “Tell us a tale. How’d you come to be in the Vale of Mira?”

“I don’t think that’s the story you want, boy.” She smirks, leaning her head against the bars. The drumming continued. It felt like her heart lined up with every tap of her pinky finger.

“It’s the story that my master wishes to hear. None come to this place without help. We need to close those portals and keep them closed this time. Quit stalling.” He continued eating the apple, watching her with blank eyes. His expression betrayed nothing.

The woman pushes away from the bars and goes to the bench in the back. Sitting carefully, she pulls one leg up to her chest, and breathes out slowly. “To know that story, boy, we have to start with another person’s story.” It was frustrating that he wasn't reacting. The woman was getting annoyed.

He frowns, tossing his apple core to the side. “No. The story of how you got to the Vale, and no more.”

“You are impatient. If I just told you the end, you’d never understand it. You want to close all roads coming in, I will start with her story.” She smiles slowly, looking up through her dirty hair. “Or...I could tell you nothing.” The last part had a sing-song quality to it, and she noted his first reaction. A twitch of his eyebrow. Interesting.... She chews on her thumbnail, staring at him.

He sighs and pulls a stool away from the wall, bringing it closer and sitting so he could watch her. “All right, Rain. Start your tale where you wish.”

She leans her head back and closes her eyes, then smiles to herself. That's what she had wanted all along. To tell him this story would make him understand her rage. Maybe then he would help her. Maybe she could make an ally happen in this awful place.

“This story…” She pauses, opening her silver eyes slowly to stare at the moon through the bars above her. “...it starts in a place you cannot imagine. Out in the stars, beyond the surface you know, where the wind doesn’t blow.”

She leans forward slightly, speaking nonchalantly. "Emily Robinson was born in the stars. It sounds poetic, does it not? But she was born there all the same. It was the year 1056 AE, and Emily was the only daughter of Gracie Ellis and Theodore Malachi Robinson of the space station Promethia. She grew up surrounded by love. Not one part of her doubted that she had worth and people who would look for her should she go missing. Her only experience of Terra to this point was what she could observe out the window of the East Promenade. She would watch out that window often, dreaming of setting foot on the planet below them."

The man interrupts her, his brow furrowing. "Don’t be ridiculous, Rain. There are no stations in the space around Terra. It’s still a designation F planet." He speaks dryly, taking another bite of his apple, watching her.

She grimaces and turns to look at him, incredulous for his interruption. "Your Terra, perhaps, boy. This Terra Emily Robinson knows is of a different time. A different realm. Now shut up and listen." The woman turns back to the moon, focusing on it while she speaks. It helped steady her mind. Remind her of what she was going there. It told her how much time she had left to tell this story.

"Emily had spent much time at that window, gazing down, wondering how it would be. If it would be like the pictures they saw on the holos, or perhaps different now. Perhaps it would be wild and free in a way she could not even imagine. And her time was soon arriving. The sensors were picking up a promising message of the surface being safe again. Soon, they would choose the crew that would go down first, and Emily promised herself that she would be one of them. She had studied it for years."

The woman grins, a small victorious feeling in her chest. The story resonated with her each time she told it. Emily was as close to her heart as a person could get, after all.

"On the eve of her twentieth birthday, the call had come out, and she had applied as soon as she was able. She watched the other’s around her, and felt their excitement at the prospect of leaving the station they had called home for too long. Emily had been first in her class for survival studies, and she was on the way to becoming the highest ranked geologist on the station. She loved the idea of being the first to discover what hadn’t been seen in centuries." The woman grins, turning back to the man. She walks to the bars, wrapping her fingers around them once more, leaning forward to whisper the next part to him.

"But the day when the list was posted, Emily felt something else. A shiver of unease that drifted through her person. Perhaps, if she had listened to that feeling, things would have been different." The grin spreads further, and she laughs. "But she ignored it in her youth and hubris. As one so often does when you are young...."

                                      Chapter One

                                        "Emily!"

The girl slowly looks up from her notebook, lifting her pen from the page. Her eyes slowly adjust to the light in the room around her, and she looks down from her perch in the storage units. It takes a moment, but her eyes lock on the boy standing below. Capping her pen, she grins.

With his fingers in his messy brown hair, the boy below looked frustrated. She knew full well that the reason was her being up where he couldn't climb.

"Hey Charlie." She speaks lightly, tilting her head to the side and dropping her chin into her hand. She was laying on her stomach, so it was easy to look down towards him.

Her words were met with a frown. "Emily. Come down from there. You know if your mom finds out you've been skulking about in storage bay, she's gonna be pissed." Charles speaks loudly, his hands dropping to his hips.

Emily shakes her head and rolls her eyes. Pushing up to a sitting position, she stuffs her notebook and pen into her messenger bag. Then, boosting off the edge of the storage container, she drops to the floor, landing carefully on her feet. Her fingertips brush the floor as she balances herself, and she grins at Charles.

"C'mon. The only way she'd find out is if you told on me." She leans forward, tapping his nose before her grin fades to a smirk. "And you wouldn't dare." The tease comes easily and she clasps her hands behind her before she starts walking down the hallway.

Charles shakes his head, then sighs, following her. Stuffing his own hands into the pockets of his black pants, he looks at her out the corner of his eye. "You know me too well," he quips.

Emily grins once more. Then, looking where they were going, she points them in the direction of the elevators.

After a moment of walking, Charles sighs. "Wanna stand together at the announcement?"

Emily frowns at the question. Today, they would be announcing who was going on the next Terra Drop. It was an opportunity to go down to the surface of the planet far below them and see if they could live down there. If the space station could finally be retired. Humanity, returning to the ground. She had been excited about it for years. Emily had been working hard to become the best in her field so that there would be no question on who was to be chosen.

She knew that he wanted to stand with her because nobody would be there for her. Her mother, Gracie, was terribly against the whole idea of her going on the next Terra Drop. And Emily didn't have anyone else.

"No. I don't think that's a good idea." She speaks flatly, looking at him and shrugging her shoulders. "I think you should stand with your family. Sarah in particular. If she doesn't make it, she's going to need your support."

He laughs softly. "She has my brothers and my parents. Who's going to be there for you?"

Emily shakes her head. "I'll be fine. For one, I know that I am going to make it. I'm first in my class, Charlie. There's no way they'll choose someone else instead." She was confident. That spot was hers.

"So confident," he quips. Then, after a moment, he continues. "Honestly, Em, it's crazy to me that you've gotten so good. You'll be the first new Doctor Robinson made on Terra."

Emily grins impishly. "Damn straight. I'll be able to get my doctorate with hands on experience. Who else is going to be able to make a claim like that?"

He shakes his head as they reach the elevator. Pushing the button, he looks back at her again. "Nobody for a while at least." Charles grins. "I hope that I make it onto Haven crew so that I can keep an eye on you."

Emily smirks. "There's nobody else I'd want to have on Haven. When I make it, I'll recommend they choose you."

Nudging her with his elbow, he smiles. "Just worry about yourself, numbskull."

The elevator doors open and he lets her walk in first. Pressing the button for the third floor, he leans back against the wall, his blue eyes focusing on her again.

Emily leans against the back wall, closing her eyes for a moment and letting her head thunk against the wall. After a moment, she speaks lightly. "If you keep staring, I'm going to start making faces."

He chuckles. "I'm just thinking. Your dad went down on the last drop, right?"

She opens her eyes slowly and sighs. "Yeah."

"Do you think maybe you'll find him down there? I mean, we lost contact, but that doesn't mean anything really."

Emily shakes her head. "I don't think about it, Charles. I can't. I just want to focus on the job ahead. Bringing everyone down and getting us settled on the surface has to come first. If he's alive.... well it's been ten years. I'm not a kid anymore. I don't need those fairytales to keep going."

Charles laughs and shakes his head. "Em, if it was my dad, I'd be obsessed about it constantly. I don't know how you don't think about it."

The doors open, saving Emily from having to respond. Instead, she just pushes him out of the elevator and grins. "Go see your family, weirdo."

He laughs at her, then waves and follows directions.

Emily chuckles, shaking her head. Stepping out of the elevator, she tightens her grip on the strap of her bag, then walks forward. Heading into the Promenade was easy enough. The crowd was starting to mill all together, waiting for the announcement to begin.

Finding a space where nobody else was against the wall, she leans back, taking a deep breath and releasing it.

Closing her eyes to steady her breathing and her suddenly racing heartbeat, she smiles. Today was the day she found out if she had made it. And if she didn't make it onto this one, she wasn't sure what she was going to do with herself. She didn't want the drop to fail, but she couldn't imagine not being one of the first ones down there.

Her eyes open as she hears the tap on the microphone. Up on the stage, she could see one of the council members standing there, getting everyone's attention.

"Thank you, everyone, for taking the time out of your day to be here. As you know, ten years have nearly gone by since the last Terra Drop, and it is time for us to go forward once more."

Councilman Rogues, she was sure his name was. He was a nervous looking man with long gray hair tied back in a ponytail. His eyes were a bright blue, standing stark against his features. She hadn't really paid him much attention in the past, but the way he played with his fingers made her realize he was much more nervous than he should be.

Her attention drifts as he continues to speak, her mind unable to focus on his words. Honestly, until the names, she really wasn't interested in the rest.

Emily looks over the crowd, her eyes landing on Charles and his family. His brothers stood around him, joking and laughing with him. Three brothers and one sister. Charles had a larger family, and she was sometimes a little jealous of the camaraderie that they all shared. It had just been herself and her mother for the last decade, after all.

Councilman Rogues turned the time over to Captain Wilkins, and her gaze locks onto the stage again. She takes in the appearance of the Captain, her eyebrow rising. His black hair was cut in a shorter length, but looked like he constantly ran his fingers through it. It draped back from his forehead, but hung loose around his ears. What was most startling was the grassy green color of his eyes. They stood out really well against the pale skin and dark hair he bore.

Somehow, Emily kept her eyes rooted on his, listening halfheartedly to the speech he gave. Partway through, his eyes seemed to lock onto her, and she blushes, looking away.

It was moments after that strange interaction that she heard her own name echo through the room. In that moment, it was as if everything went quiet, and she could only hear the wild beating of her own heart. She wasn't sure what was happening around her, but she could feel her pulse racing.

Turning on her heel, she runs out of the room. Her steps took her quickly down the hallway and through the twists and turns easily. Her blood pounded in her ears and when she made it to her destination, her breathing was ragged.

Staring out the window, she could see Terra down below them. Stepping close to the glass that separated them from the space around them, she rests her hand against it.

A calm flowed through her system, and the noise of her own heartbeat seemed to quiet down. "Dad... I made it. I'm going to Terra." She breathes the words to the planet down below. It was then that she noticed that she was shaking. Looking at her hands, she laughs softly. "I'm going to Terra."

After a moment, the happiness faded, and she sinks slowly to her knees. A strange feeling drifted through her. As if something was wrong. Tears came to her eyes and she places her hand over her mouth, holding in a sudden sob. "I'm going to Terra..." The words came as a whisper this time.

Alternating between laughing and crying, the girl stays in that space. Nobody else was around, and she felt like she could take a moment to just feel everything.

After all, she was going to Terra.

                                        .·:·.✧ ✦ ✧.·:·.

It had taken an hour before she had fully calmed down.

Pushing carefully to her feet, the girl adjusts the strap of her bag, taking a deep breath. Wiping her face with her sleeve, she considers her options. Obviously, she was going to take the position. It was everything she ever wanted. Emily had been working in the Terra Drop program to become a geologist. And with the program, she would be able to earn her doctorate on the ground while helping build a new colony for the people of Promethia. It would be a long haul of dirt testing and exploring, but she was excited.

                                        And nervous.

Then, a thought occurred to her. "Oh. Mom is definitely going to kill me." She mutters the words, then starts walking.

Making it to the elevator bank, she looks around, noting that there was nobody waiting for them. Which was rather nice, all things considered. Pushing the button, she waits, her mind drifting over what would happen in the next few months.

Two months to prepare. She would meet her team, and train with them. They would practice their survival skills, learn about the drop ship and how it worked, and most of all, they would ensure that they could work together as a team to complete whatever mission was given to them.

Probably most of the job would just be figuring out if they could grow plants down there, and start farming.

The elevator arrives and she walks onto it, pressing the button for the seventh floor, where she and her mother lived. The elevator moves slowly and she wraps her arms around her stomach, leaning against the back wall.

Emily tilts her head to the side, brown hair sliding across her face with the movement. She had left it loose today, and it hung halfway down her back at the longest points. She would have to start putting it in a ponytail when they got to work. Maybe even a bun? She wasn't sure.

Pushing off the wall and walking out of the elevator as it stops, she heads to the right down the hallway. Her mother's apartment was down at the end, and it was rather nice, all things considered. Without a neighbor on the far side, their living quarters were rather quiet.

Emily definitely liked that for her study time.

Reaching her door, she unlocks it and slips inside. Setting her bag down on the console by the door, she turns on the light. "Mom?" Her voice broke the silence of the room, and she frowns.

Walking through the living room, she peers into her mother's room. The woman was asleep on the bed, still wearing her uniform. A soft smile drifted across Emily's face, and she shakes her head. "You didn't even hear the announcement..." Her voice was soft.

Her mother. Gracie Ellis Robinson. It had just been her and Emily for the last ten years. Every since the day that Emily's father had disappeared with the last Terra Drop. They had lost communication with Promethia, and the council had decided that it was enough to call it a failure. They decided to try again in a decade, and perhaps then, the surface would be ready for them.

Since then, Gracie had been completely against the entire program. She didn't want to lose Emily to the same thing she had lost her husband to. Really, a part of Emily understood. Yet, at the same time, she wanted nothing more than to be the one to go down.

Emily had told Charles that she didn't think about finding her father, but that was absolutely a lie. She thought about it all the time. Her mind had run through scenario after scenario of finding her father down there, and figuring out what happened during the Terra Drop. Yet she never shared those thoughts out loud. After all, she had enough going on with her without being the girl who missed her father.

Going to her mother's side, she grabs a blanket off the bottom of the bed, covering the woman. She had probably worked most of the day, and came back and crashed without even thinking about what was happening today. They hadn't talked about the Terra Drop since Emily had first signed up for the program. The ensuing fight had lasted for weeks. But her mother had finally relented, never thinking that Emily would actually make it onto the next Terra Drop.

"Man. When you wake up, we might be fighting again..." Emily speaks softly, tucking a bit of her mother's hair behind her ear before kissing her cheek. She leaves the room, closing the door carefully so she didn't wake the woman up.

Going to her own room, she takes off her shoes and falls into the bed. Rolling onto her back, she looks up at the ceiling. Glowing stars had been placed there by her and her father when she was little. Most of them had peeled off by now, but a few remained.

She looked at them, her eyes softening. "Dad... I'm going to Terra." She speaks the words out loud once more. The duality of the feelings inside of her was rather curious. She felt excited, that was for sure. But there was also a sense of dread lingering. Something about the Terra Drop was ringing some rather large alarms in her mind.

Though she really didn't know what to do about that. After all, she wasn't a psychic. There was no way to know what was going to happen. All she knew was that she wasn't going to pass up this chance, no matter how nervous she was. It was probably just that, anyway. Being nervous was terribly normal in these situations, she decided.

"I'm going to Terra." She speaks the words one more time, then closes her eyes. There was a part of her that was sure sleep wouldn't come easily. Her mind was too busy. But she wanted to rest for a moment before getting up and doing something to get her mind off of it.

However, Emily soon fell asleep, her mind finally quieting.

The next morning, her mother made pancakes.

Much to Emily's surprise, they didn't fight about her going on the Terra Drop. Which is, to say, they didn't really speak at all. She ate her pancakes in silence, watching her mother as the woman went through the motions of making breakfast, but pointedly didn't talk to her.

Once Gracie went to work, Emily sighs, cleaning up after their meal. "The next two months are going to be awkward." She mutters the words, drying the dishes and putting them away in their spots.

Getting dressed, she grabs her bag before exiting their apartment. Her steps took her easily to the elevator, and she stepped in with a group of people. Slipping to the back, she rode with them down to the third floor. However, she stayed on the elevator, taking it down to the second floor.

The Terra Drop ships were down there.

Today would be her first day reporting in for training.

Exiting the elevator when it stops, she heads down the hallway, following the instructions she had received on her communicator that morning. Humming, she reads each of the signs as she passes, looking for the one that was indicated in the message.

Finally arriving, she opens the doors and slips inside. She starts to look around, then lets out a yelp as a pair of familiar arms wraps around her. After a moment in the hug, she blinks, wiggling so that she could look up at him. "Charlie?" She gets the name out, then giggles. "Don't tell me. You're our Overseer?"

A rumble of a laugh escapes and he speaks lightly, looking down at her. "Yup. I made Haven crew, and I'm in your unit."

She grins and steps out of his hug, looking around the room for the rest of the crew they'd be working with. However, her eyes lock on the first person she sees, a frown drifting across her face.

"Sarah." Emily speaks the name softly. It was Charles' sister. Looks like she had missed the part of the announcement where they were assigned to the same grouping.

Sarah frowns back at her, folding her arms across her chest. She had the same brown hair and blue eyes as her brother, but her eyes were narrowed in irritation. "Emily." The greeting was returned, and she rolls her eyes, sitting down in one of the chairs at the table.

Obviously, that wasn't going to go well. Emily recalled that the girl had been mad at her for years, but she couldn't for the life of her remember what had occurred between the two of them. It was rather hard to apologize when you had no idea what you needed to apologize for, after all.

Clearing her throat, Emily looks to the other two in the room. "Hey. I'm Emily Robinson. Geology. I'm twenty years old." She waves one hand, stepping firmly away from Charles and taking a seat of her own as far from Sarah as she could get.

The first of the other two looks up and smiles. "Roger Almego. Agricultural Sciences. Thirty-six years old. Good to meet." His black hair and green eyes seemed very similar to the Captain's, Emily decided. But his eyes were a deeper shade, so it was less striking, in a way.

The other man also smiles. "And I'm Jacob. Jacob Smith. Forty-five next month. Botonist." He had brown hair and brown eyes, which made Emily think that he was well matched to the title of botonist, in a way.

Sarah grunts, then speaks quietly. "Sarah Masters. Twenty-five. Geology." She stares down Emily, and grimaces before looking away.

Emily blinks at the responses, smiling at each of them in turn. It was a good group. She was right to think that they were a farming unit. Together, they would be able to find the right spot for the colony, and perhaps even begin the process of getting the farms prepared.

Charles sits down at the head of the table and grins. "And I'm Charles Masters. I'll be your Haven contact for this Terra Drop. We're going to be spending a terribly long time with each other in the future, so I'm glad we got introductions outta the way. Let's get started on training, neh? I've got one of these binders for each one of ya. Got a lot to cover and only two months to get professional at it."

Somehow, his jovial nature broke the tension in the room. Emily smiles, leaning back in her seat and taking the binder he hands over to her. He was right. They did have a lot to cover. And working with Sarah was going to be rough going, but she was sure that she could conquer it. After all, Sarah couldn't stay mad at her forever, right?
