Quote:
It's a new year in the Kawani lands! Winter is in full swing and much of the land is covered in snow. Does your soquili do anything to acknowledge or celebrate the new year? Are they part of a herd or family that has a tradition or ceremony? Have they made a promise to start the new year with a clean slate and change themselves for the better?

Or did they simply try to stay warm and wait for the snow to melt and spring to arrive?

Write an RP responding to the above prompt. Your soquili should acknowledge the fact that it is a New Year - how they react to that is up to you.

To qualify for both soquili & fam prizes, you must write at least 750 words. Anything less will qualify you for a familiar or 5 raffle tickets (your choice).

Winter was beautiful, but annoying. Mizu enjoyed being a pony on the go but the weather that winter tended to bring made travel dangerous. Strong wind, deep snow and fast rivers were not great for traveling. It was a good thing that they had set up a temporary shelter in a cave before the winter fully set in. It had been the perfect find- plenty of space for them to settle in for a month or three, yet not so big that it would be difficult to keep it warm. A fire crackled merrily, keeping the chill from creeping into the cozy little cavern. The light flicked against the walls of the cave, almost playfully. It was nice. Homey.

And yet.

Mizu huffed as she looked around. As cozy as it was, something felt lacking. “We should decorate and throw a party for the two of us. To celebrate a new year. We deserve it, I think.”

A life of traveling was not one Kinai had expected to be a part of - But it was one he would not trade for anything now. Seeing as he was with a pony he had fallen in love with made it all the more worth it in his eyes.

Though being a pony more suited for the spring or finer summer days, this winter cold made him feel a bit lethargic and very low energy.

With a yawn, he lifts his head to look at his mate. Warm. Cozy. Homey.

He soon looked to the ire then back to Mizu.

"Just the two of us? Sounds grand. Wonder what we could decorate this cozy little cave with." At that thought, he looked around now and began to ponder it all.

"Any ideas come to your mind?"

Mizu hummed to herself in thought. Decorating their temporary home was an idea that came to her quickly, how they would accomplish this… not so much. Sometimes she tended to get ahead of herself. She glanced down towards where her mate was laying.

“Hum. I’m not sure, I was thinking we could look and see what we can find. Maybe we can find some pretty branches or pine cones? We might have to be a little creative about it. It’s not like spring, where you can just pick some flowers and call it a day.”

“We’re probably going to need to gather some more wood for the fire anyways, so we could look for fire wood and some things that might look pretty.” She said, tipping her head to the side. “We can try to make it quick too. It wouldn’t do if we let the fire go out while we are out and about.” She knew that Kinai wasn’t the most comfortable in the cold, so it made sense to both keep the fire burning hot and to keep the trip outside the cave short.

Winter did pose a challenge when it came to decorating. That much was true. No flowers or pretty plants to really pick. Any snow would melt with the fire going and so on.

"Pine cones, pine needles, a few pretty rocks or pebbles?" He's muse aloud while tapping his paws in a thoughtful manner.

Kinai then took a look around and began to picture what would look good where - How to do it. How to set this up. What kind of little party they could so together as well.

With a curious tilt of his head, he says, "Maybe we can find some winter plants or berries too. Perhaps a few stray feathers or some such for decorations?"

Mizu beamed brightly at the suggestion that Kinai brought forward. He always seemed to have great ideas and his creativity had brought so much joy to her life since they met. Feathers, pine cones, pine needles, branches, pebbles and berries would be excellent decorations. “Those are amazing ideas! I think with enough of those and we could really make it nice and cheerful in here. And if any of those berries are edible, we can have them as a party snack.”

“Let’s try to get it done fast, then we can spend more time at our party!” It was time for the first annual winter decoration hunt. She hummed a happy tune to herself as she trotted outside, blinking slightly as the cold hit her face. She puffed out a steamy breath as she glanced around the snowy landscape. Too bad they couldn’t take the beauty of the snow and ice into the warmth of their little abode.

"Squashed berries would make for some lovely paint of sorts. Easy to wash off too." A nod from Kinai.

Though as he followed her outside, he could not help but to scrunch up his muzzle. This cold felt like it bit him and bit him hard. As gorgeous as the snow could be at times this cold? Not so much. There was a huff of breath from his nose, visibly so.

"Ugh. This cold is horrible." He'd complain with a flick of his leafy tail.

But in the end, this venture out into such a cold embrace would become very well worth it. The idea of their fun little party they had planned kept him from turning back around to hide in their comfy abode.

"Let's get this done as soon as possible, yeah? This cold feels like it's biting me mercilessly."

“Oooh, that’s a great idea! I bet we could paint all sorts of fun designs. What if we painted some of the winter scenes out here? That way we could have the prettiness of the snowscape without the cold!” Mizu was practically bouncing in joy at that idea. Kinai was the absolute best at this.

Mizu nodded at his reminder to keep this quick. She didn’t want to make him have to face the discomfort of the biting temperature for too long. Time to search. She wandered out, looking for things to collect amongst the trees and bushes. Snow cover made it a little difficult as it hid some things from view, but that made the hunt that much more exciting! “Oh, I found a cool pinecone! And these branches would be good for some fire kindling. We’ll need some larger pieces of wood though, but it’s a good start.”

Kinai seemed to mull that thought over. The berries wouldn't truly provide the right colors for snow, so improvising and imagination would surely have to play a big part in all of this.

Though that'd be part of the fun in all of this! Perhaps mixing it with dirt or even snow itself to change up the colors would work. Not that it'd change the berries colors to white like they'd need for snow - So long as they didn't try to use red berries for snow. Or any other berries that'd make it look more like a crime scene than a fun scene. That's something to keep in mind and definitely bring up to Mizu if need be.

"Pine-cone and some branches. Good find." A nod.

Now he took a glance around to try and keep up his end of the search. What kind of berries grew in the winter that they could find and use? Or just outright eat of they proved to not make a good paint substitute? Hmmm. Moving a bit more ahead of Mizu, Kinai moved his little paws about in the cold snow and gave a shiver as it ran up his spine. Goodness they needed to make this quicker. This cold was far from his liking.

Though all he managed to find in his little snow dig had been dead grass, dead leaves and dirt. Lots and lots of dirt. There's a huff of absolute displeasure as he shakes his head and looks to Mizu.

"You are having more luck than me. Perhaps I will search for bigger firewood to haul to our little abode. Berries may be a bit further ahead, I'd guess."

A few steps forward once more as he glances around to try and spot anything useful.

Mizu tossed the branch and pinecone back towards their cave- fragile items these were not and the snow could help cushion the landing. They could pick them up on their way back without a problem and it was better than trying to carry them while looking for other things.

“Well, if we don’t find too much, at least we tried and we’re doing it together, and really, does anything else even really matter?” She said with a bright smile. Kinai’s discomfort was obvious- if they only ended up getting some more firewood to add to their wood pile, that would be enough.

She started hunting for the wood and possible decorations with a renewed vigor. She searched through the snow using the surrounding trees as clues. Some searches turned up some things. Some more branches and pieces of wood of various sizes, a few more pine cones, and the most exciting item- a very lovely chunk of quartz. Other searches were not so fruitful. She didn’t find everything she was hoping to find, but something was better than nothing.

“I think I found all I’m going to find. We should go back in, get warm, then decorate, yeah?” She nodded as she started hauling her found items back to the cave, stacking the wood in its pile, and the other items inside to the side. She grabbed some of the older wood from the pile before feeding the fire, letting the temperature of the cave slowly rise some more.

"I can wholeheartedly agree on that one, love. We are doing all of this together and that is absolutely what matters in the end."

Doing things with friends had always been one thing. But to be doing wonderful things with the love of your life was another. to think he had been so lucky to find someone so adventurous who always brought new things to the teepee.

Now Kinai really began to focus. This cold was biting him more and more. Berries? There's some winter-berries. And while red, they could at least eat them. Too bad painting with them would make a murder scene.

A few twigs as well, dead leaves, dead grass - All of which could be used to make some silly things for decorations at least.

He, too, headed back to their temporary abode. The warmth felt so nice to walk into and there was a sigh of absolute relief.

"I got things to make some decorations from, berries to eat. Though unfortunately they'd make a murder scene if we tried to paint with them. Oh well, haha! Let's get started."

A new year. A new start. A silly party with a loved one held so near and dear to his heart.

Kinai could not ask for more in his life in this wonderful moment they shared together.
