It was highly unusual for Ceridwen to be out at night, especially on her own. Her father was still a very protective force, he doted on his daughter despite her being an adult now. To sneak out past his guard so late, was her form of rebellion, a little thrill she so rarely got to have.

Her plan was to take the long path through the forest to the next town, where she’d heard there was a tavern that had live music and food and dancing. Instead of sitting at home, sewing by the fire, listening to her parents talk quietly to each other, she might soon be taking someone’s hand, meeting a handsome stranger and being whisked into a dance.

This warming thought was enough to chase away her trepidation that heavy shadows and midnight sounds of the forest made, keep her moving eagerly along a path she knew well by daylight.

But daylight did not house the dangers of the night, where someone as innocent as Ceridwen might soon fall prey to the dangers shrouded in darkness. However, Finvarra was not such a danger. Not, at least, to the fae-blooded child who traipsed merrily along the path, heedless of the denizens of the night. In fact, it was Finvarra's presence alone that kept Ceridwen safe, at the present moment. "I would not walk this path, if I were you," Fin said, separating from the shadows.

Even the most deadly of creatures hesitated in the face of a Disciple of Grendel. Endowed by his god's power, and by his own great age, Finvarra was a force to be reckoned with. And so it was that Ceridwen was quite safe, indeed... for as long as Fin willed it so. Since he so willed it, she might pass unmolested. Yet Fin saw something within her, some potential that gave him pause. "At least, not at night."

At first she didn’t notice him, his voice came to her from the darkness, disembodied, belonging only to shadows. Then he moved and the moonlight hit his pale fur, giving him form. Ceridwen gasped, hand coming to her mouth, instinctively taking a few steps back.

This was not the handsome stranger she had been expecting.

Her heart rate had shot up and it took her a moment to take him in and assess her situation. Should she turn and run immediately? She swallowed around a lump in her throat, her gaze falling to the ground because looking at him was too much.

There was something about him, something that called to her in the oddest ways and made her uneasy. He was beautiful, almost too beautiful, even in the dark night.

“I-” she began, clearing her throat to find her voice, “I was going to the tavern...” Her voice felt small, childish. “But I, I can turn back. I’m sorry.”

"You are being hunted, little one," Finvarra said, observing the frightened child with no small amount of pity. He knew what it was to be hunted, to be another's prey. Even a vampire as old as he had enemies. Perhaps especially a vampire of his age; one did tend to accumulate them as time wore on. It was not Marconius or his ilk that hunted this child. "While I am here, you are quite safe. However... you would not be safe on your return journey." Assuming he didn't simply play bodyguard to the fae-blooded mortal he had encountered. Fin had been known to be eccentric like that, from time to time. Perhaps he would be so inclined this time.

But there was something else that he could offer her. A dark gift that would ensure that the ones who hunted her might never hurt her. Fin disapproved, as a general rule, of those who hunted the innocent, particularly innocents who were as she was, the children of faeries. His own kin. "You and I are kin, child," he told her, as the thought drifted past. "As such, I would know what brought you to seek out the tavern on a night as dark as this one." Though he seemed to glow in the moonlight - and very well might glow in no light at all - Finvarra was keenly aware of the darkness of the night.

Darkness which concealed many dangers. He was her elder, by many, many centuries of life, but she was one of very few who held the potential to become his childe and a Maeghar. His clan was so small, so fractured, that a single drop of new blood would be welcomed. The Disciple wondered whether this child might consider accepted his dark gift. She could not know what he was, though he had significantly greater difficulty concealing his nature than did those of other clans and bloodlines. That he was a supernatural being was written in his every feature, to his detriment. Opportunities like this one were few and far between.

She was being... hunted? Her heartbeat shot up and her eyes instantly darted to shadows that suddenly seemed deeper and darker and far more dangerous. Ceridwen couldn’t see anything but she imagined glowing eyes in the dark and sharp teeth, something ready to drag her away into the night.

When she looked back at the stranger, there were tears in the corners of her eyes.

In him, her panicked heart saw safety and hope. Her home, where her beloved parents no doubt sat, warm and happily unaware, seemed so very far away. She instinctively took a step closer, hugging her arms to her chest protectively. All Ceridwen’s bravado and joy had fled. She didn’t want to be here anymore.

“I just wanted,” she began to answer, feeling foolish, childish, “to have some freedom, to meet someone new, to make friends. I.. I wanted to dance.” She took in a fortifying breath and asked, “Will you please take me home?”

It didn't occur to her that he could also be dangerous.
